Archbishop Cupich wants your input.

When Archbishop Cupich announced the “Renew My Church” initiative in January, he invited everyone in the Archdiocese of Chicago to partici-pate in the process of revitalizing our parish communities. Just as Pope Francis asked Catholics across the globe for their input prior to the Synod of Bishops meet-ings in 2014 and 2015, Archbishop Cupich is asking for your help as the Archdiocese begins a new listening phase of this important effort. As we announced on Easter Sunday, please take time to respond to the survey to help Archbishop Cupich and the Archdiocese better understand the perspective of Catholics across Lake and Cook Counties. The survey is available online at www.archchicago.org/renew or there are copies on each of the tables near the church exits; please take one home today. You may return your paper copies to the Archdiocese by one of the following means: • Parish office between 8:30 and 4:30 Monday through Friday or Saturday’s between 8 a.m. and noon or, • Drop the survey in the Sunday Collection basket.

Survey Responses are due by April 18.

Happy Easter! May the Risen Christ be in your hearts and minds! Right after Christmas, the planning for Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week began. That may seem to be very early, but it is not, as it takes many hours and many people to help with the quality of liturgies we have at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Most parishioners do not see or experience what goes on “behind the scenes” to make sure we are ready. The countless hours spent going over the detail of each week’s liturgies, meetings to ensure we cover all of the details, many practices for Holy Week, and the “getting all items ready” for our parish community. It is with deep gratitude that I want to thank the many, many people who assist in the planning and execution of these liturgies. Without the volunteers and staff we could not do what we do! So allow me to try to thank all. First, I would like to thank our Liturgy Planning Team consisting of Anne DeFranco, Dennis Valentini, Eugene O’Brien, Mat-thew Everett, Dan Harris, Jennifer Kolber, Jim Lobus, Judy Diosegi, Mary Martino Gacs, Anna Roeser, John Scanlan, Susan Speth, and Ron Vanasdlen. I meet with this team on a monthly basis to gather information and insight on what we need to do and how we should plan our liturgies. It’s their energy and wisdom and dedication that enable all of us to experience God the way we do. I want to thank our Proclaimers for their many hours of preparation so they proclaim God’s Word in a manner that His word should be, with love and conviction. Altar Servers, both children and adults, who spend many hours of practice and study of the liturgy plans to ensure they know what they need to do. They do it well! Our Music Ministry led by Ron Vanasdlen: the choirs, cantors, and musicians who by using their talents invite us into a more prayerful experience of worshiping God. The Keepers of the Feast Team led by Judy Diosegi. This team includes Kris Partain, Carol Suvanich, Pat Smuck, Diane Vasquez, and Marcia Juracan. They spend countless hours working on our seasonal themes and church environment. Carol Suvanich and the volunteers who do such a magnificent job making our sanctuary a beautiful place for all of us to wor-ship God. The Easter flower display is just beautiful. They are artists! To our many liturgical ministers, Sacristans, Liturgy Coordinators, Eucharistic Ministers, for their dedication and focus on our Lord’s work is second to none. The Greeters and Ushers, who greet all of us and our visitors with big warm smiles. And, thank you to our Knights of Columbus for all they do! Dan Harris and his maintenance team: the constant care of setting up, taking down and the continuous cleaning of our church that makes it a welcoming place for us, but most importantly for our visitors. The things no one sees—for example, after the Easter Vigil, which ended at 10:30 p.m., Dan and part of his team were here until well after midnight making sure the church was ready for 7:15 a.m. Mass on Easter. Then they were here at 6:00 a.m. on Easter as well. Thank you! Our front office staff, who make sure things are running when many of us are focused on Holy Week. A big thank you to Kris Partain, who is present so many hours and days. Without her hard work, focus to detail, and vast knowledge, we would be lost. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our clergy: our Pastor Fr. Trout for his confidence in us, Fr. John Hennessey, Fr. Joe, and Fr,. Matt, and for Deacon Dave and Deacon Dennis for their support in all we do. It is a privilege to serve the people of St. Joseph’s and it’s with profound gratitude that I thank all of you for making my ministry here so meaningful! In the Risen Christ, Deacon George Kashmar, Pastoral Director of Ministries

Kids have fun learning and living our Catholic faith in this week-long “Catholic Camp” for kids entering the 2nd through 8th grade. Green Tip of the Week Recycle Electronics BEFORE May 1 in Lake County

After subsidizing the electronics re-cycling program with local tax dollars to comply with a State law mandat-ing electronics recycling, SWALCO is discontinuing the program due to

lack of funds effective May 1. They are working “to de-velop a more sustainable program so that our residents are able to comply with the law, which currently bans 18 items from the landfill, including TVs.” The agency will provide a list of locations in or near Lake County that accept electronics, though most locations, such as Best Buy, Staples and Goodwill will likely not accept TV’s. We will keep you updated. http://www.swalco.org/About/Docu-ments/Press%20Release%20Electronics%20Program%2003.04.16,%20v2.pdfm. Kairos Retreat at Stateville April 28-May 1Kairos Men’s Prison Ministry Needs Help Outside the WallsAn important part our Ministry is the prayer of many individuals outside the walls who are asking God to work in the hearts of the incarcerated attending our weekend. The Kairos Prayer Vigil is a resource by which friends of Kairos pray for the residents—and the Kairos team—by signing up for a one-half hour (or more) time slot, during which you raise all in their personal prayer for that timeframe. We offer those who wish to pray for us the opportunity to formally sign up for a time on the vigil which will ultimately be conveyed materially to the residents on a 100 yard-long prayer scroll so that they can see someone either has been or will be praying for the weekend at all times of the Kairos Retreat #19 at Stateville. If you are interested, please use the following website: http://www.3dayol.org. Once on the site, click on “Prayer Vigil Listings” and scroll down to STATEVILLE CORRECTIONAL CENTER and click on the actual weekend date which allows you to select a preferred day and time to pray. Thank you for joining us in this Ministry to bring the light of Christ to the darkness of prison.

AAIM Grief Support Group Meets Here Monthly The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists invites anyone who has experienced loss or injury due to a drunk driver and/or distracted driver to attend our self-help grief group. The group will meet at Saint Joseph’s Formation Center, Suite C at 7:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. For more information contact Rita Kreslin at 847-240-0027. The purpose of our meetings is to help victims of impaired/distracted driving crashes recover emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally from their loss. We cannot change what happened, but we want to learn how to live, love, laugh and have peace in our lives again. Our primary purpose is to live a peaceful life remembering the happy times. We do not want to forget the crash, but we don’t want to dwell on the pain. We hope to bond with the other victims who understand our pain. We will share our experiences, strengths and hope to help others and ourselves. We are not professional counselors, nor do we claim to be. We are a self-help group and we only share our stories with one another. Grief group topics will change from month to month. Some of the topics we have covered are: surviving the holidays, how our grieving has affected our loved ones, journaling, coping skills, dealing with our anger, and how we keep memories of our loved ones alive.Facts About AAIM The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) is an Illinois-based, statewide citizen’s action group which, in 32 years, has gained a high degree of credibility in Illinois political, law enforcement, civic and business circles. Two Illinois citizens, Carol Golin and Glenn Kalin, both of whom lost family members because of drunk drivers, founded AAIM in 1982. Others quickly joined and today the organization has more than 5,000 members and contributors throughout Illinois. For more information about AAIM visit: www.aaim1.org.

Thoughts on Giving“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’” John 20:21 Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world to share His peace and Good News, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. We should look for opportunities to share His peace with our brothers and sisters not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, you will receive the peace of Christ.

Breaking Open the WordA Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture

Next Sunday’s Gospel — John 21: 1-19Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Response: Glory to You, O Lord

Readings for the Week

ReflectionBeginning with the Protestant Reformation and to this day, many Christians have struggled with the teaching authority of the Catholic Church and the role of the Pope as the Vicar of Christ. Next Sunday’s Gospel recounts the instructions Jesus gave to Peter and the disciples when He appeared to them on the shores of the Sea of Tiberias. He reminded them that in following Him and placing their faith in Him that they would find abundance and be nourished. It is on this peaceful seashore that Jesus then turns to Peter and asks three times, “Do you love me?” At once we see that Jesus has forgiven Peter of his treacherous denial and assigns to him the leadership of the church. Jesus has been preparing His Apostles from the beginning. The Kingdom of God has been estab-lished on earth and Jesus has given the keys of the Kingdom to Peter. The Kingdom is a place of safety and security where all may live and prosper under the watchful and protective care of the one who has been given the responsibility to care for all in his charge. The Pope is charged, as Peter was before him, to take Christ’s place as head of the flock here on earth. We, like the first disciples, are called to do our part to follow Christ’s instruction and help bring all souls into the safety and abundance of new life in Christ Jesus.

For further reflection on the Church and the mission given to it by Christ, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 871-933.

Reflection Questions1. Do I love Jesus? What might I do to grow in my love for Him and for the Father who sent Him to me?2. The teaching of the Church serves as the boundary of the “sheepfold”, a place of safety and abundance. In what ways can I see the Church’s teaching as a fence keeping me from the greener grass of the culture on the other side? What can I do to feel more secure in living within the safety and abundance of the Church? 3. The Second Vatican Council reminded us that we are called to be lay apostles of Christ. What one thing can I do to bring Christ’s message to life in how I live? In my family? In my community? For the least of God’s children?

At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them,

“Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. “Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this sig-nifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
