SUNDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER 2016
EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
‘Then Jesus said to the disciples…’ The
parables Jesus told, and that are record-
ed in the Gospels, were specific to his
hearers, their background and lifestyle.
So it is sometimes difficult for Western,
English-speaking 21st century readers
to untangle them. Interestingly, this
parable here is given different headings
by different translators and commenta-
tors: ‘the dishonest steward’, ‘the unjust
steward’, ‘the unrighteous steward’,
more recently ‘dishonest manager’ and
finally ‘the shrewd manager’. He is the
central character in the story – an anti-
hero. The parable story is followed by
several ‘sayings’ commenting on the
story – trying to make sense of this
character. Perhaps the moral of the
parable, as viewed in our modern com-
mercial world, is that those ‘of the
world’ – operating in their environment
– are farsighted – hence shrewd, pru-
dent, looking to survival. The ‘children
of light’, those concerned with ‘spiritual’
matters should be ready in their rela-
tionships to promote ‘heavenly’ things.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns September 18th 2016
Gradual Hymn
Jesus, where’er your people meet
There they behold your mercy seat,
Where’er they seek you, you are found
And every place is hallowed ground.
For you, within no walls confined,
Are present in the humble mind;
Such ever bring you where they come,
And, going, take you to their home.
Dear Shepherd of your chosen few,
Your former mercies here renew;
Here to our waiting hearts proclaim
The sweetness of your saving name.
Here may we prove the power of prayer
To strengthen faith and sweeten care,
To teach our faint desires to rise,
And bring all heaven before our eyes.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns September 18th 2016
Offertory Hymn
Father, Lord of all creation,
Ground of being, life and love;
Height and depth beyond description
Only life in you can prove:
You are mortal life’s dependence:
Thought, speech, sight are ours by grace;
Yours is every hour’s existence,
Sovereign Lord of time and space.
Jesus Christ, the Man for Others,
We, your people, make our prayer:
Let us love as sisters, brothers,
All whose burdens we can share.
Where your name binds us together
You, Lord Christ, will surely be;
Where no selfishness can sever
There your love we all may see.
Holy Spirit, rushing, burning,
Wind and flame of Pentecost,
Fill our hearts afresh with yearning
To regain what we have lost.
May your love unite our action,
Nevermore to speak alone:
God, in us abolish faction,
And through us your love make known.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns September 18th 2016
Final Hymn
Forth in your name, O Lord, I go,
My daily labour to pursue,
You, Lord, alone resolved to know,
In all I think, or speak, or do.
Each task your wisdom has assigned
Still let me cheerfully fulfil,
In all my works your presence find,
And prove your good and perfect will.
You may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost substance view,
And labour on at your command,
And offer all my works to you.
For you delightfully employ
All that your bounteous grace has given,
And run my course with even joy,
And closely walk with you to heaven.
Charles Wesley (1707-1788) alt.

1. O God, the heathen have come | into . your | land: They have defiled your holy temple,
they have made Je- | rusalem . a | heap of | stones.
2. They have given the dead bodies of your servants as food to the | birds . of the | air:
And the flesh of your faithful ones to the | wild beasts | of the | earth.
3. Their blood they have spilt like water on every | side of . Je- | rusalem: And | there is | none to | bury them.
4. We have become a mockery | to our | neighbours: The scorn and | laughing-stock . of | those a- | bout us. REFRAIN
5. How long, O Lord, shall your anger be | so ex- | treme: Will your jealous | fury | burn like | fire?
6. Pour out your wrath on the nations that | do not | know you: On the kingdoms that have not | called up- | on your | name:
7. For they have de- | voured | Jacob: And made his dwelling- | place a | deso- | lation.
8. Do not remember us against the sin of | former | times: But let your compassion hasten to meet us,
for we are | brought | very | low.
†9. Help us, O God our saviour, for the honour | of your | name:
O deliver us and expiate our sins, | for your | name’s | sake. REFRAIN
