Briefs From Father McMahon

According to Archdiocesan policies parishioners are to be given the opportunity to recognize Fr. McMahon’s gifts and to share their sentiments about his ministry. So, we are providing a Parish wide Survey for parishioners participation. The survey can be easily accessed by going to the Archdiocese’s web page (Archchicago.org) and clicking on “Departments” on the upper left of the page, then scrolling to “Ministerial Evaluation” to access our web page. There, in the middle of the page, find “360 Catholic Leadership review for priests” and click on your appropriate language. Then follow the instructions for anonymous participation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Father Tom Dore for coming to St. Peter Parish to lead us in our “Search For God.” We certainly heard many new and wonderful things---we must take them and “ponder them in our hearts”. There are many people to thank for making this event possible at our Parish. I thank all the people on our Mission Committee who shared their great ideas and marvelous talents. Thanks to the hospitality folks and to the ushers and SPRED group who greeted and distributed programs and materials for the mission. Thanks to Teri Pyles and Barb Beetschen for publicity. The environment inside the church and outside was creative and autumnal, courtesy of Wanda Sobczak, Ted Sowa and Bruce Pagni. Our wonderful choirs and skilled and generous musicians bolstered our prayer with their ardent contributions of music and song. Thank you, Fran, for “Sacred Silence.” Thanks to Jeanine Kellman for the programs, printing, typing, and a thousand things that make our liturgies work at St. Peter. St. Augustine said: “Those who sing pray twice”. We did. Thanks to Bob Eaton and Terry Harrison for the gift of light for our banner-everyone could see the illumination at night. Thanks to Kari Leaf and the entire staff. Thanks to Mary Leonard and all the Women of the Word for the Monday soup and bread luncheon. To everyone who baked and bought, cooked and shared. I think I gained two pounds! Thanks to Angela and Bill Fleming for food, faith and fellowship. I would like to thank the Knights of Columbus and the CCW with Pat Frydrychowicz for all their help and contributions. Thanks to Megan Miller for coming from Deerfield to work with our Middle school and High School students. Many thanks to everyone who came these three days. We experienced together and celebrated the Paschal mystery and the Source of all life and meaning-Jesus Christ!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Imagine the frustration of bishops who work strenuously over their ad limina reports, directing study committees, assembling data, honing the texts, traveling to Rome “to the threshold,” only to have it all collapse into a fifteen-minute group meeting with the pope. More than a few have grum-bled at the weight of this “treasure” from our tradition, yet from the pope’s vantage point, they are essential to his ministry. Pope John Paul II recalled his own experience as the Bishop of Kraków, visiting with Pope Paul VI in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The memory of those individual visits caused him to strengthen the format, assuring each of the world’s 2,744 bishops a privileged fifteen private minutes with the pope every five years. If you wonder what the pope does all day, the thought of dealing with five hundred bishops a year and reading their detailed reports on diocesan life should help fill up the calendar. Pope John Paul II used to say that he approached each individual meeting with the personal goal of learning something new about the Church, and his lively interest made the visits immensely worthwhile. The content of the private meetings remains under a privilege of secrecy, or as Cardinal Theodore McCarrick once said, “You’re only supposed to quote the pope if he tells a joke.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PARISH MISSION PRAYER REQUEST, PLEASE CON-TINUE TO PRAY. . .Although our parish mission “Searching for God” with Father Dore has ended, we have JUST BEGUN!
