MAY 31, 2020 — PENTECOST SUNDAY 3
Pentecost During Holy Week (with the exception of this year) at the Chrism Mass, Cardinal Cupich breathes on the Holy Oil that is used at every Church in Cook and Lake Counties throughout the year - the Sacred Chrism, the oil
of the Catechumenate, and the oil of the Sick. The breathing over the oil is to remind us of the Holy Spirit. It is reminiscent of Jesus breathing upon the disciples to give them strength and grace for the mission that awaited them. What is striking about the feast of Pentecost, is that the Holy Spirit came down upon ordinary people. I mean, there were great people gathered in that room, like Mary for example, but on the whole, most of those present would not have been considered great by worldly standards. They were ordinary. Actually, from society’s point of view, most of the disciples of Christ were weak, timid, even shallow people. If we look at what we know about the Apostles, it’s not very impressive. Four of them were simple fishermen - Peter, Andrew, James and John. James and John were nicknamed the “Sons of Thunder” by Jesus, possibly because of their fiery tempers. The group of Apostles contained a reformed tax collector - Matthew, and at least one member of an outlawed party of violence - Simon the Zealot. There was Thomas, who was a skeptic, and, although no longer among them, they had a betrayer in Judas Iscariot. Overall, it is safe to say that the Apostles were flawed, sinful, impulsive, weak people. Yet, these mostly uneducated followers of Jesus became very involved in the world. With the Holy Spirit to guide and empower them, great things were accomplished through them. The same applies to all of us. If we open ourselves up to the Holy Spirit, great things can be accomplished through us. When we cooperate with the Holy Spirit there is no limit to what can be accomplished. Pentecost is not just a feast day that marks the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. It is also our feast day. As followers of Christ, the Holy Spirit has come down upon all of us. We have been empowered to continue the work of Jesus. With the Holy Spirit to guide us, we will become true disciples of Jesus. Yours in Christ, Fr. George

Our Lady of the Lakes is On the Move!
MAY 31, 2020 — PENTECOST SUNDAY 9
Formation & Education From The Desk Of Kari Leaf
Ever since last Sunday, I can’t get a song out of my head. It’s called “I send You Out” by John Angotti. We sing it at church, and if you watched the Our Lady of the Lakes online Mass last weekend, it was the last song that was sung. The lyrics to the refrain are:
I send you out on a mission of love and know that I am with you always
until the end of the world.
This song is based off last week’s Gospel which was Matthew 28: 16-20. In the passage, Jesus commissioned his disciples before he ascended into heaven. It is such a beautiful scripture passage. Not only are Jesus’ disciples told what Jesus wants of them and gives them their mission, but he also tells them that he will be with them forever! We have to remember that in our everyday lives as disciples! Jesus is also with us, just as he was with his disciples forever. Another way I’ve heard it phrased is… If God brings you to it; he will bring you through it. When God is truly calling us to something, he won’t leave us hanging! He will be with us as he is always with us. There are some days during this pandemic where I have felt discouraged, sad, and angry. But there are also days where I have felt thankful, happy, and peaceful. Jesus is with us during those hard days, and he is also there on those good days as well. No matter what your state of mind is today, or what challenges you may be facing in the days, weeks, and months to come, it is important to remember that you are Jesus’ disciple. Always ask him what his mission is for your life, and know that he will be with you always guiding you, leading you, and even sometimes pushing you along the way. Remember Jesus’ mission is one of love, so go out and spread his love to others today. God bless, Mrs. Kari Leaf Director of Religious Education at St. Peter [email protected] 847-395-0037 (Please leave voicemail as my office hours are limited during this pandemic.) May 31, 2020 Pentecost Sunday Prayer of the Faithful Inspired by the Holy Spirit, let us pray for the needs of all those around us. For all Christians as they are renewed by the Spirit and follow farther along the path of Christ, let us pray to the Lord. For a spirit of peace to prevail throughout the world, especially in areas of ancient enmity and bitterness, let us pray to the Lord. For leaders and people in positions of responsibility great and small, that during this pandemic they will make decisions to support the value and dignity of human life above other concerns, let us pray to the Lord. For those among us who have been marginalized by our society, for the poor, the homeless, and those victimized by the substances that they have abused, let us pray to the Lord. For those who are discerning vocations to the priesthood or religious life in response to the call of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord. For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died, especially N., N., and N., let us pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord. Life-giving God, your Spirit fills us with the desire to follow your Son Jesus Christ and help renew the world. Hear these our prayers and grant them in Jesus’ name, who is our Lord for ever and ever. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Lake County Illinois Catholic Charities assistance programs
If you need help in Lake County Illinois, then Catholic Charities is one of the leading organizations to contact. They provide direct emergency assistance, referrals, and partner with non-profits and companies such as North Shore Gas. Social workers from Catholic Charities will advocate on your behalf, provide case management, and offer direct financial assistance if it is available.
Heating bill assistance is offered from the Heartship Program. Catholic Charities may have funds that can help North Shore Gas customers whose heating service has been shut off. Various hardship conditions need to be met, as well as income guidelines are in place. Call the agency at 847-782-4100 in order to apply for Heartship.
Housing and shelter is offered by the Samaritan House. This location caters to homeless women and children in Lake County. So short term housing is offered, as well as support and case management to help people end the cycle of homeless-ness. Once someone is stable, Catholic Charities will help facilitate longer term housing placement assistance as well as provide skills training. The goal is to also help someone find a job so they can pay the rent on their own in the future.
Some of the case management services provided by Samaritan House include employment and budget counseling, skills education, life skills development, and much more. Referrals are provided for other community resources as well as state of Illinois and federal government public assistance programs. 847.782.4142

Get assistance with developing workable budgets, communicating with prospective landlords, maintaining and paying for the housing, and get information on tenant's and homeowner rights and responsibilities. Foreclosure prevention and counseling may be provided too.
MAY 31, 2020 — PENTECOST SUNDAY 15
Pentecost Sunday
When we were in high school, there was an old cheer at ballgames, “We’ve got spirit, yes we do. We’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you?” We would scream it back and forth with the opposing team’s fans. And while, “Got Spirit?” could certainly be the catchphrase today, we see people receiving the spirit in many different ways. In Acts, there is a bombastic appearance of a loud noise and a driving wind, followed by people being able to understand speech in many languages. It is reminiscent of a booming, “This is my Son, my Beloved.” Psalm 104 “Lord, Send out Your Spirit” was also the first psalm used at the Easter Vigil, in response to the creation story. First Corinthians acknowledges that there are many different spiritual gifts, but we must use them together as the body of Christ. The Sequence is a beautiful prayer that calls down the Spirit. In John’s Gospel, the Spirit comes through the breath of Jesus. What can we take away from this? That the Spirit of God is not “one size fits all.” Rather, the Holy Spirit will come to us, speak to us, be given to us, as each of us needs. UNLOCK THE DOORS When we put the Gospel in its context, John 20 starts with the empty tomb and the appearance to Mary Magdalene. Still, the disciples were scared and confused. They gathered together to regroup. They locked the door for fear of the Jews, whom they had just experienced as an angry mob, whom they had just seen crucify their friend Jesus. These disciples were afraid of the Jews, but they may also have been feeling guilty and confused for running away from Jesus at the cross, for hiding, for trying to protect themselves. Now the risen Jesus comes to them saying, “Peace be with you,” showing them his wounds, and greeting them again. Jesus is modeling something very powerful here. Most of us hate to be vulnerable. We try to hide our wounds and scars. We try to protect ourselves and show everybody that we have it together. In order to be healed, to receive the Spirit, to move on in our lives, we need to unlock our internal doors. We need to let Jesus into our house, into our hearts, and into those darkened corners of ourselves. It might be frightening. It might mean going to the sacrament of reconciliation or speaking with a spiritual director or even with a therapist. RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT We often worry about how others will respond if we are less than perfect. Jesus knew the disciples were flawed humans. He did not get angry or give them a guilt trip. He said, “Peace be with you.” He was gentle. Jesus gave them the gift of new life through a simple gesture. He breathed the Spirit into them. This is reminiscent of Genesis, when God breathed life into Adam, and Ezekiel, when God breathed life back into the dry bones. Jesus concluded with, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” So not only did Jesus entrust them with this role, this power, he first showed them how it is done. How do we in turn breathe life into our families and friends? Our coworkers? The stranger we meet? How to pray the Chaplet of Saint Raphael the Archangel
The chaplet to St. Raphael the Archangel has a set of 9 beads and 3 end beads for a total of 12 beads over and above the medal. On the medal, pray the following words: "You are Raphael the Healer, You are Raphael the Guide, You are Raphael the Companion Ever at human sorrow's aide." On each of the 3 small beads, say the Hail Mary to Mary, the Queen of angels. On each of the 9 following beads, in honour of the 9 angelic choirs, one in honour of each choir, (Angels, Archangels, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Prin-cipalities, Powers, Cherubim and Seraphim) say the following prayer: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your Glory! Glory be to the Father: Glory be to the Son; Glory be to the Holy Spirit! Conclude the Chaplet with the following prayer: "Saint Raphael, angel of health, of love, of joy and light, pray for us."
