Welcome… You enter these doors...not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. God is your heavenly Father. Come, then with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips into God’s presence, offering God your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built these churches of worship and to all who have beautified them and hallowed them with their prayers, praise and financial sacrifices. Ask God’s blessing on those who love these places of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. May that blessing rest on you, both on your going out and coming in.

From the Pastor’s Pen
Reverend Jeremiah N. Murasso, Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D.
Violence and the Soul
We are only twenty-five weeks into 2018 and
already, we have seen approximately twenty-three school
invasions where school personnel, teachers and students
have either been seriously wounded or killed. This is
approximately one invasion per week. The most recent two
massacres took place, one on May 18, in Santa Fe TX and
the other on May 11, in Palmdale, CA. There were three
school invasions in April and in March alone, there were
six.
In addition, throughout these twenty-five weeks of
2018, we have seen what appears to be an increase in sense-
less-mean-spirited attacks directed to people, and animals
as well. Acts of violence that stem from the less invasive
behaviors such as petty thievery to the more violent attacks
on human life and human dignity. There appears to be an
increase in home invasions, as elderly, particularly are
targeted and in some cases left for dead. In other cases, we
have seen law-abiding citizens who have been brutally
tortured, killed and in one case burned along with their
home and property.
In addition, we have seen the irresponsible and
reckless behavior exhibited by caregivers who continue to
leave children in heated cars while they either shop or dine.
This has been the cause of several near deaths, as children
cling to life. The list goes on, as we have seen several
road-rage episodes where innocent people were either
driven off the road or gunned down and killed.
Beyond Indifference
The assault on human life goes beyond what at one
time may have been characterized as indifference toward
life. These attacks are not the result of terrorism; this is not
the work of Al Qaeda or ISIS. Rather, the acts of violence,
which appear to be on the rise is American; Americans
attacking other Americans. This has become the existential cancer of our age. It points to a culture in decline; a culture,
which in many ways has lost its sense of ethical and moral
decency. It points to a culture that continues to emerge in
the absence of a spiritual barometer: an ethical and moral
measure for gaging attitudes and behaviors that are
translated into a worldview that strives for goodness and
respectful comportment toward all of God’s creation. In
other words, we have abandoned the “Golden Rule.”
Although we live in a free society, we have become a
society that continues to allow itself to be held captive by
the type of secularism about which Pope Benedict XVI
spoke when he visited America in 2008. This American Secularism, said Benedict is unlike the secularism of the
Enlightenment, which was intellectual and scientific in its
scope and purpose. American Secularism is a secularism of
convenience. It is the reduction and the elimination of the
Master Value, which in turn neutralizes or equalizes all
values making faith and the belief in God merely one value
among a host of other competing values.
Secularism continues to influence and drive
American society; thus, has imprisoned our culture,
rendering man unable or unwilling to re-discover his own
sacred essence. We as a people and as a society are
evolving into a culture that continues to be held captive as
if spiritually caged, by man’s inhumanity to his fellow man
because we as a people and as a nation no longer define
who we are and what we do by our faith in God. And yet,
ironically, this great country was founded under God.
Violence: Unfilled & Frustrated Meaning
Violence and violent behaviors are directly related
to unfulfilled and frustrated meaning and a human soul that
yearns for wholeness. Man, in our twenty-first century
society continues to look for and seek after meaning and
meaningful experiences in the wrong places. This in itself,
although emotionally debilitating and spiritually draining is
often the result of unconscious motivations as the desires of
the body are in conflict with the needs of the soul.
Meaning and meaningful experiences that tend to
be temporary, contribute greatly to man’s feeling of
emotional as well as spiritual isolation; an experience that
results in feelings of intense sadness and depression, or
concentrated anger. Man tends to cultivate meaning in his
life, which is short-lived and temporary at best because of
his perceived need for feel-good-quick-fix-solutions for the
symptoms of constant stress, exhaustion, loneliness, apathy
and the often uncontrolled desire to dominate. These feel-good-quick-fix-solutions, while providing pleasure and
emotional relief for the moment are at best, short-lived.
When temporary and fleeting pleasures begin to
dissipate as important as that might appear to be for the
moment, man begins to view himself as a victim; as one
deprived (from without) of happiness and integrity, as if
society and other people hold the key to one’s personal
sense of wellbeing and integrity. Post-modern man, living
in the twenty-first century sees himself, and actually
defines the self by his losses and what he believes society
and other people have taken from him. This leaves man
with a void at the very core of his being; a feeling of being
emotionally septic and incomplete.
The Epidemic of Violence
The epidemic of violence continues to permeate
American life and rob man’s soul of inner peace and
stillness. At the same time, this culture of violence
continues to contribute to the deterioration of faith in both
God and in one’s neighbor; leading to a spiritual death that
infects and affects individuals and society as a whole.
While violence toward another is never justified,
violence in general appears to show itself as a way of
venting one’s resentment or disfavor with both the civil and
religious climate of the day and at the same time, it serves
as a means of affirming one’s control over society and
other people. The type of violence that we see being played
out in the public forum points to a society on the verge of
what Pope John Paul II referred to as “Spiritual Death”
having embraced (consciously or unconsciously),
JUNE 17, 2018
the gospel of death from a need to feel something….anything…..that will fill the void and squelch the fire of apathy and anger at the core of man’s being.
Violence Opposes Nature
Violence is contrary to man’s nature as it robs the human soul of life and nourishment. By nature of the soul’s immortality and created essence, the soul seeks life, perfection and goodness. Aristotle and later St. Thomas Aquinas described the soul as being the entelechy of the body. The word entelechy is Greek and means, form of life. In other words, the human soul provides life to the body, but not just any life: created life. As Christians we believe that we are created in the image and likeness of God. The soul reflects God’s life within man’s soul. When man loses the sense of entelechy, life, human life has no purpose. Life without purpose gives rise to the fabrication of temporary forms of gratification and the drive to find substitute and less permanent forms of meaning.
Entelechy: Life Principle of the Soul
When entelechy, the life principle of the soul is removed from man’s awareness, life itself loses its reverence. When man treats life irreverently, the choices that man makes in life are made in the absence of conscience. To the man of faith, conscience points to a Transcendent Agent beyond himself; to that spiritual unconscious element in man that is intangible and incorruptible, and at the same time speaks not from the mind of man, but from a higher reality called God.
Filling the Void
As man goes through life attempting to fill the void with behaviors and experiences that provide temporary forms of happiness, otherwise known a pleasure, he perpetuates a condition that keeps him looking outward for satisfaction rather than inward (at self and soul) for nourishment. Violent behaviors leave man with no sense of connectedness to himself, to others, to nature, to history, and above all to God. As man loses the sense of entelechy within his soul, he can no longer view life or other individuals with reverence and respect; thus, he feels neither responsibility nor compassion for other human beings and life in general. In other words, at this stage man has no moral compass for gauging his behaviors and for prioritizing his needs. Twenty-first century man is living in a time of Thanatos, a time of the living dead in which people, while appearing to live decent lives by sociological standards are in fact, spiritually dead. Worse still than the notion of being spiritually dead and deprived of life...is being spiritually dead and deprived of life and not really knowing it. As this state of being goes unchecked, man continues to fall short of acquiring and experiencing those essentials in life that can result in long-term peace with God, with others and with soul.
Man has consciously and perhaps at the same time, not-so-consciously abandoned God as the root, the center and the source of entelechy. To live life from the soul is to live life as Jesus tells us: like a child. “Amen, Amen, I say to you, unless you accept the Kingdom of God
like a child, you will not enter into it” (Mark 9:15; Mat-thew 18:3). JNM
Additional Note: Although sensitive of gender-related language; he/she, him/her, it is often necessary to refer to the generic, “man” when reference is made to the essence of human nature.
Mission Cooperative Plan: Educating Dalit Christian Children in India
Father Emmanuel Francis will be visiting our parish this weekend to make a mission appeal to support the education of Christian children (India) who are Dalits who are formerly known as ‘Outcaste or Untouchables’ under the caste system of India. Having suffered oppression and discrimination for centuries, Dalits are still limping to taste the freedom of life and human dignity. Father Ben represents His Excellency, Bishop Neethinathan who has a heart for these children, and appeals on behalf of them, striving to protect them from child-labor situations and from dropping out of school. Christianity is India's third-largest religion withapproximately30million followers, constituting 3% of India's population. Around 70% of Christians are Dalits, a marginalized group without any rights or power. Dalits are the victims of an ancient form of persecution and segregation in India known as the caste system. Caste is based upon the Hindu belief of “Karma,” the notion that one’s present life is based on the good and bad deeds of their previous life. They are so low in the social hierarchy that they are outside of the caste system and considered "outcastes”. Even today, caste often determines your spouse, your occupation, your residence andyourfriends.Approximately25 percent of India's 1.3 billion peopleareDalits.37 percent of them live below poverty line earning less than $2.00 a day. Dalits remain the most vulnerable, marginalized and brutalized community in the country. They are treated less than human beings because they are impure and unclean according to their Hindu concept of Caste. Although untouchability has been abolished by the Constitution of India in 1950, it is very much practiced everywhere throughout India
Even after 70 years of India’s independence and
economic advancement in recent years, Dalits remain
marginalized, invisible and oppressed. Social
exclusion, economic sanction and lack of education
deprive the Dalits of basic human rights, even today.
This suffering group is kept far from the benefits of
equal education, career advancement or political
opportunity. As Christian missionaries arrived in India
through the years, many Dalits embraced the
Faith, hoping to attain equality and dignity. Many of
their aspirations have remained simply dreams. Unlike
Hindu Dalits, they are deprived of education,
employment, protection and political rights. Such
denial is a huge violation of human rights and is
gravely unjust. Many families are forced to the brink
of poverty and starvation. Many have no choice but to
leave their homes to migrate to cities and towns in
search of jobs and food. Such decisions lead children
to discontinue schooling and move to new, hostile
environments. Ultimately, many become
child-laborers and school drop-outs to make a little
extra income for their families.
In this painful context, our Bishop Neethi, makes
this appeal in seeking your help and prayers. Your
generosity can help these children return to school and
enjoy their childhood. We can surely prevent many
children from child labor, child trafficking and child
migration. Your contribution will be used to pay
school fees, books and uniforms. You can also
support a child through educational sponsorship at
fatherben.org Thank you and may God richly bless
you for answering God’s greatest commandment -- to
love.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Prayer for Vocations
The Lord has planted the seeds of service in the hearts of
young people. We will reap the harvest when we cultivate it
through prayer, invitation and encouragement. If the seed to be of
service to the Lord has been planted in your heart, call Fr.
Michael Casey, Director of Vocations, Archdiocesan Center at
St. Thomas Seminary, Tel. 860-761-7456, email
[email protected] or visit the web at www.hartfordpriest.com
Many Thanks to Vincent Affinito
who donated many hours in cleaning
and restoring the pews at St. Vincent
de Paul Church. Your time and your
expertise are greatly appreciated!
Fr. Murasso’s Message Board
OPERATION ORGAN
MANY, MANY THANKS to those who have
contributed to OPERATION ORGAN. To date, we have
collected $5,915.00 toward our $6,000 goal.
*********************
MONEY COUNTERS NEEDED Many thanks to parishioners who have
expressed an interest in counting the Sunday collection.
You will be contacted shortly. Several more volunteers
are needed. Please call the parish office or email Fr.
Murasso at [email protected]. We would like
to add at least two additional groups to the several
groups that already count on a regular basis.
*****************
St. Clare Church
Within a few short weeks, we will begin to
market the parish plant of St. Clare Church on Coe
Avenue. Discussions have taken place with the
Parish Finance Committee as well as the Parish
Advisory Board. Archbishop Blair has granted
permission to proceed with this process. The parish hall
will remain open for parish activities as usual, and
funerals will still take place if the need arises.
*****************
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena
This week begins the eighth week of our Novena to
Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The novena is held on
Wednesday at Our Lady of Pompeii Church at 7:00pm. The
final day, Wednesday, June 27 will conclude with an outside
Mass & procession (weather permitting).
RECEPTION FOR
FR. SEBASTIAN RETIREMENT
On Sunday, July 1 @ 2:00 to 4:00pm in St.
Vincent de Paul Church hall, there will be a reception
in honor of Fr. Sebastian’s Retirement and Departure
from St. Pio of Pietrelcina. Father Sebastian will be
here until the end of July.
It was wonderful to have Fr. Sebastian
throughout this year and we wish him well with all his
future endeavors.
***********************
St. Anthony Bread
Father Sebastian, Fr. Galasso and I will bless
bread at all the Masses this weekend, June 16 and 17.
Parishioners may take the bread to their homes as a
reminder of the simple blessings that are given to each
of us every day. The bread should also be a reminder
that “we are our brother’s and sisters’ keepers.” As Jesus
nourishes us, we too, must in turn nourish one another.
REPAIRS & PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
As indicated, there are several projects at
our two worship sites that need immediate
attention with regard to overdue repairs and
preventative maintenance projects.
St. Vincent de Paul Church
UPDATE!
1. The AIR CONDIDTIOER UNIT ON THE
LEFT SIDE (over the sanctuary) of the church
is in the process of being replaced.
2. A complete ROOF REPLACEMENT ON THE
LEFT SIDE OF THE BUILDING (over the
sanctuary) must be replaced ASAP. Poor
drainage and age has resulted in severe leakage
and cracks.
3. The floor in the church will be replaced with
porcelain and vinyl tiles.
4. The bathroom at the entrance of the church will
be upgraded with a power-flush toilet as well as
a new porcelain floor. The sink will be replaced
and the walls painted and tiled.
5. The outside windows of the church will be
repaired and painted. I am still looking at
possible options for the front and side doors.
Our Lady of Pompeii Church
1. The crucifix over the tabernacle will be lifted
and will be suspended from the ceiling. Mary
and John, having been cleaned up will be put
back beneath the cross. In addition, I am
having large boulders made out of Styrofoam
to place at the bottom of the cross. I want to
reproduce the Calvary grotto that is in front of
the office building at All Saints Cemetery.
2. The windows on the outside of the church need
to be painted as well as the interior of the
church.
3. The baptism font at St. Clare’s Church will be
moved to Pompeii given the fact that the
present baptism font at Pompeii is falling
apart.
St. Clare of Assisi Prayer Garden
Zack Anastasio, a parishioner of St. Pio and
a member of Boy Scout Troop 401 is working on
his Eagle Scout project. The Eagle Scout Award is
the highest honor that a boy scout can achieve.
Zack will be constructing a prayer garden in
honor of St. Clare in the vicinity of the gazebo at
