Dear Parishioners:

Soon we will celebrate our nation’s Birthday! The Fourth of July is called Independence Day because it is the day that the thirteen colonies declared their independence from the British.

As we celebrate Independence Day, let us remember how the signers of the Declaration of Independence risked everything, their lives, homes, businesses, property, and reputation. If they failed they could be tried for treason. As we celebrate Independence Day let us hold dear, our many freedoms. As we celebrate Independence Day let us remember that we continue to enjoy those freedoms because those serving in our Armed Forces put themselves in harm’s way to protect them. And as we celebrate Independence Day let us honor and show respect to our flag and teach our young people to do the same, because of what our flag represents. Whether you are celebrating the 4th of July by attending a parade, fireworks, a picnic, a concert, or a baseball game; be safe, have fun, and remember that we are celebrating our independence and our many freedoms. Among our freedoms which we cherish is the freedom of religion. Sadly, we have seen religious rights challenged and eroded. Many who practice a faith (particularly Christianity) are suspect of bigotry or bias – some see us as unintelligent or “unenlightened”. The culture of our country is becoming more secular and relativistic – having no need of God, faith, worship or doctrine -- no sense of right or wrong. Perhaps there are many ways to address this, but for July 4th, why not consider gathering for Mass on the front lawn on Tuesday at 9:30am? We will meet on the Smithson Avenue lawn, near the statue of Saint Mark the Evangelist. Bring a lawn chair and your entire family! Lets start the day off right by thanking God for true freedom and express a spirit of gratitude. Happy Birthday America! And may God continue to bless you!

PARISH OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK: Due to the Independence Day Holiday this week, our parish office will be CLOSED Monday and Tuesday,

July 3 and 4. Office hours will resume at 8:00am on Wednesday, July 5th.

Help Wanted: Helping Hand After Surgery: We have a parishioner who will be going through some surgery in mid-July. She has the need of someone who will assist her in some house cleaning before the surgery, then light cleaning / errands during a recovery period of about 3 weeks. Would you be able to volunteer? Teens are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent. (This would be a PERFECT parent/child Confirmation project!) If this sounds like an opportunity for you to serve, please contact Father Mark Hoffman at the parish office: 899-3000. Thank

You for your consideration.

Automatic Bank Deposits: We are grateful to the Mount Calvary Parishioners who have automatic contributions mailed to the Church but we are experiencing some delivery issues. Please contact your bank and change the mailing address to 695 Smithson Ave. Thank you!

4th of July OUTDOOR Mass 9:30am at St. Mark Church

Let’s get together to celebrate Mass for the upcoming Independence Day! Bring a lawn chair or blanket and join us for “Mass on the Lawn” at St. Mark’s frontyard.

Reserve your “space” to watch the fireworks later that night.

All are warmly welcome! (Monday, Thursday and Friday Masses are at their regular times and locations)

Family Perspective: Today’s gospel challenges us to resist the individualism of our culture. Everything we are and have is pure gift which we are expected to share especially to the “lowly ones.” What has been freely given needs to be shared freely. No strings attached. Marriage Moments: Independence is an important step on

the journey to adulthood, but marriage also requires dependence. I depend on you to keep your word, to be there when I'm feeling hurt, to watch the kids so I can have a break. How do you depend on one another?

Happy Birthday

The Music Ministry would like to extend a sincere thank you to Florence Bannister for her gracious donation of a piano that we will use for rehearsals. Florence, please know how much we appreciate this, and that we will think of you each time we practice making a “joyful noise unto the Lord.”
