Pumpkin Farm

On October 15th, 2010, I went to the Pumpkin Farm with the kindergarteners. When we arrived all the kids started yelling at the top of their lungs. As soon as we got off the bus the children automatically spotted the playground and started playing on it. We did a lot of things including: hay rides around the haunted greenhouse, feeding chickens and goats, a haunted maze, and tricycle rides. When we were just about to leave they sang Happy Birthday to me, and the workers let us all chose a small pumpkin. Overall, we all had a great time. –Cassandra Holbrook

Pumpkin Math

On Tuesday, October 22, 2010, Mrs. Bocook’s first grade class got to do pumpkin math—that’s math with pumpkins. Each student got his or her own pumpkin. They measured the pumpkin with a piece of string. They tied the string around the stem of their pumpkin and then they pulled the string down to measure. After they got the right measurement, they put their string beside somebody else’s to see whose was bigger. Then Mrs. Bocook taped their string on a board. Next they got to carve their pumpkin open and take out all the seeds. Then they grouped the seeds by tens. Looks like the first graders had a wonderful math lesson! -Alannah Molenda

My Pyramid On November third we had people from King’s Daughters’ Medical Center visit our school. They taught us about each food group in a walk through display in the gym. They told us that we all have different amounts we need in each food group. You can find out more by going to MyPyramid.gov. Then we did a project with some fat-like substance. There were three kids; one liked the angus burger, another liked 7 slices of pizza, and one liked chicken nuggets. The Angus burger has the most fat, and then the 7 slices of pizza, and the 6 piece chicken nuggets had the least amount of fat. That was the My Pyramid. –Abby Crites

Christopher Columbus

In the first grade, Mrs. Janice Ledford came in and talked about Columbus Day. They talked about why we honor what he did because he is the person who told people about America. The kids made their own Christopher Columbus. This was a fun project for the kids to do. Then they learned what they ate on the long voyage to what was supposed to be Asia but turned out to be the Americas. They learned that they ate dried bread, jerky, almonds and other nuts, raisins, and sardines. Last she read a book about Christopher Columbus and his voyage to America. –Abby

Keep Your Sneeze to Yourself

Your nose is gross. Teresa Salyers and Missie Grayson proved that in all the classes on October 19, 2010. Using glow germs they showed us how fast germs can spread by sneezing or shaking hands. We then used a special light to see all the germs that were spread. Mrs. Grayson’s experiment showed us the importance of keeping your hands clean. As winter approaches washing your hands is very important. –Zach Greene

Maple Leaves and Maple Syrup

Mrs. Janice Ledford and Mrs. Blankenship taught the 1st graders about maple syrup and leaves. Mrs. Ledford talked to the kids about the leaves and where they came from. While she was talking to them they were learning how chlorophyll helps the leaves live and when winter comes the days get shorter, and that they get less chlorophyll and they die. Then all the 1st graders ate syrup, crackers and maple candy. After that they all made maple leaf magnets, and they were all very cool. Mrs. Ledford said “maple syrup is made 70% in Canada and 30% in the northern USA.” The 1st graders started their science projects by putting maple leaves under a sheet of paper and coloring it with a crayon. They turned out very cool. Mrs. Ledford talked to the 1st graders about the Indians and how they made the first maple syrup. Maple syrup became important in the American diet. When everything was over Mrs. Ledford told the 1st graders that she would be back with cupcakes and the 1st graders went crazy. They all had fun. –Jake Damron & Tyler

CRS Student in Paramount Christmas Production

Fifth grade student Zach Stafford will be performing in the Paramount’s production of the “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. He will be playing the role of ‘Ollie Herdman’. Performances will be held on: Nov. 27 @ Festival of Trees, Dec. 16 @ 9:30 & 11:30 am, Dec. 17-18 @ 7 pm. Break a leg, Zach!

European Festival

Friday, October 22nd, the 6th grade classes held a European Country Festival. Each group of five students got to choose which country their team wanted to do. Each group had to find the country’s flag, important facts about the country, any country festivals, and a food that they eat in that country. The teams then created a display to show what they found. Then they were presented in the library so all 4th/5th/6th students and teachers could look, hear and even taste what they found. Some teams played music from their country and dressed in costume. Everybody had a great time. –Amy Moore

Nick Palmer

Mrs. Moore’s son-in-law is going to Afghanistan for the army. His name is Nick Palmer. He is leaving on the 7th of November. He came into our classroom and taught us about the economy and life in Afghanistan and what’s like to be a soldier. It was a neat experience. –Casey Walter

McTeachers’ Night

October 12th was Charles Russell McTeacher’s Night at the Ashland McDonalds. All students who came to McDonald’s and ate dinner had their name put in for a drawing. Zach Francis in 3rd grade won the drawing, winning a ride in the Ronald McDonald car at the Ashland Christmas parade. The grand prize winner of the poster contest was Bethany Ledford in first grade. Other grade level winners were: 2nd grade-Melanie Grimm, 3rd grade-Riley Dixon, 4th grade-Sarah Brison, and 6th grade-Breck Oppenheimer and Sarah Ratliff. The event raised $4,175 for our school. This night was a fun, joyful night for everyone. –Abby Crites

Parent University Cary Williams, District Technology Teacher and Professional Development Coordinator, will be offering a series of classes titled Parent University. The upcoming Parent University classes for November will be as follows: Nov. 8th, at 1-2:30 p.m. and at 6-7:30 p.m. This class will provide information to parents about Infinite Campus. Parents can learn how to access their child’s grades and other important information using the Parent Portal. This class will be held at Central Office in the computer lab. Nov. 30th, at 6-8 p.m. This class will be dealing with Social Networks (Facebook, MySpace, texting, etc.) that are popular among youth, but that can also cause issues such as cyber-bullying. This class hopes to enlighten parents about the capabilities and potential dangers of such networks. This class will be held at the Ashland Police Department.

Halloween and Car Safety

On October 22nd, the kindergarten classes had a Kentucky State Trooper, Elliott Gollihue, talk about Halloween and car safety. The kids learned that they needed to bring a flashlight on Halloween, to wear a mask they can see out of and stay on the sidewalk. The trooper talked to the kids about wearing a safe and comfortable costume; go with a trusted adult, and not to go to a stranger’s house. He reminded them that children under 4’8” tall should use a car seat when riding in a car and everyone should always wear a seat belt. At the end, they could ask questions. The kids really liked Mr. Gollihue coming and talking with them. –Chloe VanHorn

Halloween Dance

On Thursday, October 28th, CRS had a Halloween Dance. There were lots of candy, music and drinks. It was really, really fun and there was a costume contest. Cayden Deskins won scariest costume, Abby Crites won prettiest costume, and Ema Leigh Forbes won most original. It was a great dance! Rayanna Stephens in 6th grade thought the best part was “the candy, drinks, and music!” The dance was a fundraiser for the 6th grade field trip. –Nick Endicott

Counselor’s Corner Our Too Good for Drugs program continues and has fit very nicely with our Red Ribbon Week celebration this past week. Students in all classes have been talking about making good decisions. Most of the primary students have learned a very cool song called, “Stop and Think.” This song reminds us how important it is to stop and think before we act. Intermediate students are learning special strategies for dealing with peer pressure. Remember to ask your child to share about guidance classes. We have a lot of fun! -Mrs.
