This biennial award is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of Australian Children’s Literature. I am sure that those involved in Children’ Literature and those in Education will recognise the amazing contribution of Mem over a long period of time. Her passion for reading and her understanding of the importance of children having access to high quality literature is on public record. Mem has always been an outspoken advocate for every child, growing up in Australia to have access to books that reflect them, in all their diversity and that have an Australian voice. On behalf of the SA branch of the Children’s Book Council we offer Mem our warmest congratulations and wish her well in all future projects. A number of changes have occurred within the South Australian Branch of The Children’s Book Council during this year. As the National Board of The Children’s Book Council of Australia works towards bringing all the Branches together to make us a truly national organisation our Branch is working towards making this a smooth transition. One of the first big steps is for us to move our website over to the national website – which you can view at http://cbca.org.au/. Queensland has already moved their website over to the new platform and other states will follow in a timely manner. Throughout this year the SA Branch has continued to work towards electronic booking systems to streamline, and reduce the workload, for events bookings. At this stage we are pleased with the take up of TryBooking by our members and will continue to explore the possibilities of using this for other SA Branch activities. Now that Book Week is over and all the decorations have been packed away it is time to take a breath and reflect on the projects that our committee runs that have a Book Week focus. Again this year we ran our very successful and well attended “And the Winner is!” event where presenters were attempting to predict the Short List. This was followed by “Picture This’ which had a focus on art to help develop an understanding of the books on the Short List for the Picture and Early Childhood Categories. Our final Book Week focus event was the Book Week dinner at the Maylands Hotel. As usual the event was a huge success, though the organisation was stressful due to the large number of last minute bookings. This is an issue the Committee will address for future planning. Our Committee is always looking at ways to develop and improve the events we run so any feedback would be most appreciated. Our final event for this year is the Breakfast with an author, which is to be held at the Caledonian Hotel on Saturday 28th October 2017. Our presenters Jane Jolly and Sally Heinrich will discuss their new picture book "Papa Sky". Both these presenters are hugely entertaining and informative, so this is an event not to be missed. Booking details are on the next page. I look forward to seeing many of our members at future events as the council works to build the profile of Australian Children’s Literature within our community. President’sReport

It is most important that I start this month’s report with a mention of the wonderful award won by Mem Fox this year.

Mem has been awarded The Nan Chauncy Award for 2017.

I look forward to seeing many of our members at future events as the council works to build the profile of Australian Children’s Literature within our community.

Awards

CBCA – SA committee member Jane Moore was recently awarded the Scholastic Reading Leader Award for Term 4, 2017 having been nominated by her principal, Mark Hansen from Ardtornish Primary School, St Agnes. In nominating Jane, Mark identified Jane’s strengths in helping students develop a love of reading through her amazing library displays, her integration of the arts into her work as well as promoting illustrators as well as authors. Jane makes the library the cultural hub of the school – it is a dynamic place to visit.

We congratulate Jane on this award and no doubt those who know Jane will agree she is an extremely worthy recipient.

NanChauncy–MemFox

International renowned and much loved SA author Mem Fox was the winner of the Nan Chauncy award announced as part of the Book of the Year celebration in Tasmania on Friday 18 August 2017.

This biennial national award, initiated by the Tasmanian branch, recognises a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of Australian children’s literature.

We congratulate Mem on this well-deserved award. Mem’s acceptance speech can be found in Reading Time.

ChristobelMa.ngley

On 17 August 2017 in Melbourne Our Mob, God’s Story received the Australian Christian Book of the Year Award. It was a labour of love for Christobel as co-editor for 5 years, producing this book of Aboriginal and TI Christian art, published by Bible Society Australia for its bicentenary in March. It is about to go into its 4th printing with11,000 published so far.

On 1 September 2017 at the Mitchell Library in Sydney Maralinga’s Long Shadow: Yvonne’s Story (A&U 2016) was the winner of the NSW Premier’s History Awards 2017 Youth Section. In 2010 Maralinga the Anangu Story was runner up, but sadly this shocking chapter of Australian history is still not known in schools or beyond.

CBCANa'onalBoardUpdate–NewsfromMargotWhat a busy and exciting few months we’ve just had! Now that we’ve all had a chance to catch our collective breath I’d like to sincerely thank you for helping to make our two CBCA calendar highlights, the 2017 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards and the CBCA Children’s Book Week, such a success. I’d also like to share some news regarding one of our partners and a lovely little snippet about our Book Week artwork.

Book of the Year Awards Government House Tasmania was a grand and fitting venue for our 2017 Book of the Year Awards presentation, graciously hosted by the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honorable Kate Warner AC. As our organisation’s signature event, the annual Awards ceremony is eagerly anticipated by creators, publishers and CBCA branch members across the country and requires a great deal of planning and organisation. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Tasmanian Branch for such a well-run and memorable event. It was lovely to hear the CBCA acknowledged in several of the Award acceptance speeches and I feel so privileged to be part of an organisation of dedicated volunteers who tirelessly promote the creative talents of Australia’s wonderful community of children’s book creators.

Awards Media Coverage This year we again engaged the services of public relations company DMCPR media to promote our Short List and the Book of the Year Awards. The following overview of our coverage shows this was a worthwhile exercise. Major media around Australia covered the Winners, highlights included a double-page spread in the Sydney Morning Herald which was picked up by various Fairfax print and online publications, The Australian’s Stephen Romei interviewed Trace Balla, as did ABC Weekend Breakfast. News Corp’s metro Saturday newspapers picked up Francis Whiting’s story and ABC radio along with several independent stations interviewed several winning authors.

Book Week 2017 With another successful CBCA Children’s Book Week behind us I want to thank all the Branches for your herculean efforts in driving and supporting this iconic event in your local schools, libraries and communities. I have seen some marvelously engaging and creative CBCA Children’s Book Week initiatives in support of your members. Congratulations to you all on your innovative outreach and for really making the most of the opportunity the CBCA Children’s Book Week gives us to showcase the value of being a CBCA member.

Party People Wins National Retailer Award One of our partners, The Party People, recently received the Australian Retailers Association’s 2017 Independent Retailer of the Year award in recognition of their business success. In the lead-up to CBCA Children’s Book Week they promoted our ‘Escape to Everywhere’ banner and merchandise via their online store, which will have boosted awareness of CBCA Children’s Book Week among their customer base. Upcoming Branch Visits From September 28 I will be visiting every Branch to discuss the options for restructuring the CBCA. The Structural Review Working Party, comprised of Board and Branch representatives, has been researching and comparing alternatives since its inception earlier this year. I am looking forward to sharing the Working Party’s ideas with you and to some robust conversation and feedback on the two alternative models. Awards Review As you know, we have been running the annual Book of the Year awards for over 70 years. We plan to keep them going for another 70 years but we need to ensure the Awards are consistent with international best practice. An Awards policy and process review is currently underway. A survey was recently distributed to a range of stakeholders including Branches, publishers, creators and librarians. This closes in October when the results will be collated and presented at the next Board meeting. As key stakeholders in the Awards I value your input and encourage you to complete this survey.

2018 Awards Update Kate in the National Office continues to receive a steady stream of entries for the 2018 Book of the Year Awards with around 180 entries to date. As is the case every year, we expect the numbers to rise steadily as the closing date of November 30 approaches. Our judges have been working tirelessly for a number of months now, giving each entry their careful consideration. Aren’t we privileged to have such a wealth of creativity here in Australia? I am sure next year’s Notables list will be another stellar one. CBCA Brand and Intellectual Property (IP) We are fortunate to work for a highly respected and much loved Australian organisation. We value our Brand and IP and are working to ensure that other people and organisations understand and acknowledge its value also. To this end, to move us closer to best practice, we have now adopted a fee-for-use model regarding the use of our IP (CBCA logo and artwork). Details of the new Brand and IP Usage guidelines will be communicated soon and any queries can be directed to Kate Flamsteed at the National Office on 1300 365 922 or [email protected]. Note that the new guidelines provide for schools and public libraries continued free use, and for not-for-profit use at a discounted rate.

A final snippet…

Proving that her delightful artwork has truly international appeal, one of Freya Blackwood’s Book Week posters is off to Turkey at the request of an Assistant Professor at Acibadem University, Ankara. The poster will adorn the walls of his new baby’s nursery, which I think you’ll agree is an entirely suitable spot!

EscapetoEverywhereWe’re taking a daytrip. We’re going nowhere Like anywhere else.

Not like here. Not like there.

We’ve been to both places, But have to declare That anywhere else

Is unlike everywhere.

Here’s where we are at And there’s where we were. We’ll always be somewhere,

Whatever occurs.

And though anywhere Can be somewhere, I know,

Everywhere is a place Everyone ought to go.

So stay here or go there

Any time, any day, But wherever you go I would just like to say

That until you’ve been everywhere

Nowhere will seem Quite as good as the place That you never have been.
