    The Chimes

Changing SeasonsLiving Together In Jesus Christ

I want to continue discussingving together in Community;ollowing Dietrich Bonhoeffers

writings on Life Together (In ChristianCommunity).

To live in Christianity meansving in community through and inesus Christ. Bonhoeffer believed we

belong to each other only throughChrist. This means Christians needeach other because of Jesus Christ.

Christians are those who haveound grace, salvation, deliveranceand justification in Jesus Christ, alone. The Christian no longer lives ofhimself, by his own claims or his ownustification, but by Gods claims andustification. The life and death of aChristian is not determined by his ownesources, but only in the Word that

comes to him from outside, in God

Word to him. Our righteousnesscomes from outside us. We aredependent on the Word of Godspoken to us.

We believe God has put thWord into the mouth of men so it mbe communicated to other men. When one hears the Word he speait to other. We are to seek and findWord in the witness of others, in thmouth of man. Christians, thereforneed other Christians who speak

    Gods Word to us.

This is a goal of all Christiacommunities: That we meet oneanother and bring the message ofsalvation. God permits us to meettogether in community. The fellowsis founded solely upon Jesus ChrisAll we can say is that the communof Christians springs from the Bibland Reformation message of the

justification of man through gracealone. This is the basis of the

St. Johns Episcopal Church is a loving community of faith and worship, showing

the love of God to each other and the world.

    Changing Seasons

    Continued

    longing of Christians for oneanother.

When we look upon ourbrother we should realize that he will

be eternally united with us in JesusChrist.

When Jesus took on flesh he took on,out of pure grace, our being, ournature, and us. Now we are in him.Where he is, there we are also; in thencarnation, on the Cross, and in hisesurrection. We belong to him

because we are in him. That is whyhe Scriptures call us the Body ofChrist. We who live together inellowship with him will one day be

with him in eternal fellowship. Whenwe look upon our brother we shouldealize that he will be eternally united

    with us in Jesus Christ.

What determines ourbrotherhood with each other? Thebrotherhood consists in what Christhas done to both of us. We havecommunity with others and continueo have it only through Jesus Christ. The more genuine and deeper ourcommunity becomes, the more we

    are bonded in Christ.

One who wants more thanwhat Christ has given us does notwant Christian brotherhood; rather, hes looking for some extraordinaryocial experience which he has notound elsewhere. He is bringing hisconfused and impure desires intoChristian brotherhood and community.

In Christian brotherhood andcommunity everything depends upon

being clear from the beginning.Christian brotherhood is not an ideal, but a divine reality. Christianbrotherhood is a spiritual and not apsychic reality.

Christian brotherhood andcommunity is living together in andhrough Christ.

    Church ProcedureChange

When you visit other EpiscopalChurches, you may have noticed thatin many of them the congregation isseated during the reading of thePsalm. The rubrics are silent on thesubject, but the general feeling ofLiturgists is that the congregationshould be seated during the reading

of the Psalm in the service of HolyCommunion.BUT.... since the congregation isalready standing in the service ofMorning Prayer, it is better to have thecongregation continue to stand for thereading of the Psalm in the service ofMorning (or Noon or Evening) Prayer.Beginning Sunday, July 24, weadopted this custom and will continue

to use it. The Lectors will providedirections to the congregation.

St. Johns SealyOutreach 2011The ongoing mission of Christianoutreach is one of the most importfunctions of a church. We have agood history of outreach, but wantdo more.

The Vestry is always discussing wto perform our outreach mission. W

have decided that the moniesbudgeted for outreach should folloyou, the congregation, to the areaswhich you are already working orwould like to work. What better wafor us as a church FAMILY to suppeach other while supporting thecommunity in which we live?

So, we are asking for your help. Please let us know which servicegroups you belong to and how wecould help. Susie Zapalac will be

heading up our efforts and can bereached at her email address;[email protected].

We look forward to compiling the lof groups that we can support. Pledont be shy about asking for supphelp. We want to support as manygroups as we can and look forwardlearning more about your work.

V E S T R Y - Originally the word referred to theroom where the priest would put onhis vestments, at which time local laitywould meet with him to discuss theaffairs of the parish. Over time thename of the room came to signify thegroup of men who governed a parishbecause it was where they met. Whilethe vestry meeting location haschanged, the name has remained thesame.

The vestry of an Episcopal churchhas three primary responsibilities. Thefirst two are managerial: to take careof parish finances and the parishbuildings. The third is to chooseindividuals to fill various positions ofleadership and representation: thechoice of a rector, the choice ofdelegates to the diocesan convention, and the selection of others as thediocesan canons may stipulate. Thevestry also serves as an advisorycouncil to the rector who by church

law is the parishs chief liturgical andpastoral officer.

The Vestry consists of lay members ofthe church eleted by the congregationat the Annual meeting in January. Thecurrent members of the St. JohnsVestry are:

    Brian Owen, Sr Warden

    Suzie Zapalac, Jr. Warden

    Kathleen Kelly

The Episcopal Church is part of theworldwide Anglican Communion, andtraces its heritage to the beginnings ofChristianity.

Our liturgy retains ancient structure andtraditions, and is celebrated in manylanguages.

We welcome men and women, marriedcelibate, to be ordained as bishops, priests, and deacons.

We believe in amendment of life, the
