ChangingSeasonsEPIPHANY
We have now entered the season of
Epiphany, a Christian feast day that
elebrates the revelation of God the Son as
human being in Jesus Christ. Epiphany
alls on January 6, or, for us, the Sunday
etween January 2 and January 8.
Many think of Epiphany as the time the
Wise Men from the East found and
worshiped the Christ Child.
When the Magi reached their destination,
what was the first thing they did? They
knelt down and paid him
omage (Matthew 2:11).
These were respected wise men. They were
on speaking terms with the king. As
astrologers they were privy to the secrets of
the stars and the stars were believed to
hold the secrets to the universe. They were
not even Jews. The Eastern cults and
traditions of the Magi were far removed
from the messianic traditions of the
Hebrews.
Yet, when they came into the presence o
this little baby, what did they do? They
threw themselves down on the ground
without hesitation and with great humi
Here was one whose greatness was to b
honored. Here was one born to be
adored.
What does adore mean? In its Latin
roots it means to reverence and honor.
it is a much stronger word than honoractually is the equivalent to a Greek wo
which means to prostrate. To adore
something is to go as far as we can with
worship and praise.
So, in this season of Epiphany let us
adore, the Messiah, God the Son, as H
became a human being in Jesus Christ
lived and walked among us.

Being Episcopalian
Spiritual but not Religiousby The Rev. George Anne BoyleIn the wake of the New Age, and the ever-growing love affair our culture has with all
hings spiritual, a new mantra has emerged: Im spiritual, not religious! It is the mantra of ex-Catholics and once-in-awhile Protestants and others on the spiritual path. This emerging mantra
has grown up in response to religion that looks more like a museum, religion that says you
ractice THIS way or you arent one of us, religion that isnt relevant to the life I lead, religion
hat tells us to believe 12 impossible things before breakfast and leaves no place open for
questions or doubt.
And theres this longing and maybe even a presence of energy in life. Perhaps if you aren the spiritual journey, you have felt this. Energy that gives life and joy whether itsooking at Rainer at sunrise, or playing music with others, or sitting with someone in a time of
orrow. That energy is what the Christian people call the presence of the Holy Spirit. Theollowers of this Jesus know this longing and energy only too well.
What is this longing? It is the longing to live in community with others from all walks ofife a community that is present in sadness and joy, a group of people searching and
questioning and doubting and finding more questions about that presence together.
It's not about having answers as much as it is about engaging a story. It is about your storynd how your story connects to an ancient story of desert wanderers that, in time, came to see
hat humanity and this energy they called God mingled and existed through Christ and thus,
xists in all of humanity. Is it possible to practice and grow your spirituality within anrganized church?
Yes! The Episcopal Church holds many possibilities open for those on the spiritual pathooking for a diverse community of believers.
The beauty of the Episcopal tradition is that it is open to questions and new possibilities, as
well as ancient teachings. Imagine a spiritual practice that is both grounded in tradition andpen to new possibilities.
