United Methodist Church of Roseville

Volume 20 Issue 4

“The Purpose of The United Methodist Church Is to Make Disciples of Christ

for the Transformation of the World..”

By Crystal Caviness and Ashley Gish

Since 2010, the people of The United Methodist Church through its Imagine No Malaria initiative have fo-cused on reducing malaria deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the process, the denomination has learned that “our God is able, more than able to do more than we can ask or imagine.”

Together, we have:

Provided more than 4 million life-saving bed nets, Insecticide-treated bed nets remains the most effective way to prevent malaria. Since The United Methodist Church began its effort, which has included bed net distributions, global mortality rates have fallen by an estimated 60 percent.

Renovated 61 healthcare facilities, Improved medical clinics and hospitals in Africa result in better diagno-sis, case management and access to medication.

Treated more than 2.7 million people with malaria Treatment works. Because of the global effort to fight malaria, an estimated 6.8 million deaths have been averted since 2001, according to the World Health Or-ganization’s 2017 World Malaria Report.

Protected more than 175,000 structures with indoor residual spraying (IRS)IRS is the application of long-acting chemical insecticides to the walls and roofs of house and domestic animal shelters, a top malaria intervention recommend by the World Health Organization.

Trained thousands of community health workers and volunteers. Through education outreach, a grass-roots network has been established with health workers and volunteers who deliver and install bed nets and teach people how to properly use and care for the nets. In addition to aiding with malaria prevention, these workers often assist in other health-related capacities that serve as a vital connection for communi-ties.

I have worked with UMCOR for many years. I served with the Desert Southwest Confer-

ence as a missionary for Border Ministries. Part of my Job entailed distributing 10,000

UMCOR blankets and Health kits along the border every winter. In 2016 I asked UMCOR

for a grant to fund a shelter in our church for Asylum seekers, To date, UMCOR has fund-

ed that shelter with $140,000, I was also the Conference Coordinator for the Imagine No

Malaria campaign. In addition, I consulted with CalPac and CalNevada in their fundraising

campaigns. Many of the funds raised in the Imagine No Malaria campaign were put to

use by UMCOR in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Co-author of the article below, Ashley Gish

BE THE LIGHT OF

PRAYER

Time for Prayer and Devotion has a new name it is Be The Light of Prayer.

I had a conversation with some-one recently that was not aware of what we do. Here is what we do. We meet every week at 7pm in Heritage Chapel. We pray for all the Prayer Chains that have been sent since we last met. We pray for all of our concerns, we pray for our

Church, we pray for our coun-try, we pray for any tragedies that has happened in the last week. We pray for you. Some of us will visit people in the hos-pital or their homes to pray with them. We are a confidential group so the prayers don’t leave the room except to be heard by God. We feel much better after we pray. I will start the prayers and all who are comfortable will pray out loud also. It is not a requirement. If you have a prayer for us email Diane McGuire [email protected] and that will go out to everyone on the Prayer Chain or email me [email protected] and only Be The Light of Prayer will hear your prayer. Come and join us and feel the peace and joy of praying in group. The first time I did I was amazed at how I felt.

Creative Christian Crafters

will have items for sale on

their Crafter's Table after

church on April 7th,. This

will be at the same time as

the Children's Candy Sale.

The 3 C's will have more of

the adult bibs or clothing

protectors as they were all

out of them, plus a set of

mother and 2 baby ducks

made out of fabric and

stuffed. Come to see what

we have.

With the Lift Project coming

soon, the 3 C's will be clear-

ing some space in their craft

room on the second floor to

accommodate the Lift. If an-

yone is interested in a sew-

ing machine, we may have

a couple to deplete from our

inventory, due to the chang-

es in the craft room. Talk to

Donna Hall, if interested.

Hazel, a long time member

of the group, recently cele-

brated her 100th birthday,

and continues to make the

pillows for the Gathering Inn

each month. Happy 100th

Hazel, and thank you for all

your dedication and hard

work. The pillows are given

out to the homeless on the

4th Sunday of the month,

when the Gathering Inn

meets at First Church.

We will continue to make donations from our sales to our church and our commu-nity.

Decisions regarding donations

will be made at our next meet-

ing. If anyone has a suggestion,

please let us know.

We openly welcome anyone to

our meetings on the 1st and 3rd

Wednesdays at the church at 10

a.m. Do come by and visit. For

more info contact Anne Gregory,

Donna Hall, Nancy Bray, Hazel

Nofz, Dee Huston, Shelley New-

ton, Debbie Thompson, Barbara

Hulse, Sherel Harris, Denise

Lumley or Susan Reining.

Let the peace of Christ rule in
