    The Chimes

    The LiturgicalCalendar

ent is a season of preparation,

onsisting of the forty days from AshWednesday plus the six Sundays beforeEaster. For centuries it has been

bserved as a special time of selfxamination and penitence.

Throughout Lent, the worship services of

he church take on a simpler tone.

Banners are removed, crosses are veiledand the word Alleluia is not used in the

words of the liturgy or hymns.

n preparation for Lent, customs varyreatly from church to church to include

he customs of their denominations, ulture, and country. Fat Tuesday or

Shrove Tuesday are celebrated in manyongregations is various ways, including

    Pancake Suppers and Burying the

Alleluia . Pretzels, hot cross buns,

simnel cakes and Mothering Sunday allhave their roots in the Lenten tradition.

The Book of Common Prayer lists Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday as Fastdays. It also indicates that the following

days are observed by special acts ofdiscipline and self-denial:Ash Wednesday and the other weekdays

of Lent and of Holy Week, except thefeast of the Annunciation.

Good Friday and all other Fridays of theyear, in commemoration of the Lords

crucifixion, except for Fridays in the

Christmas and Easter seasons, and aFeasts of our Lord which occur on a

    Friday.

Those are the mandates for personaobservance of Lent in the Episcopal

Church. It is customary to mark theseason by giving up something or takon more (or as 1 congregation labels

Gus and Tom). Either of these areappropriate ways to mark this holy tim

preparation. When we consider ourlenten observance, we need to keep i

mind that we are preparing for EasterLent is an opportunity to prepare for oown eternal life.

    Acolytes

The ministry of acolyte is a

serving ministry of the Church that comes

from ancient times. From those days until

now acolytes have been faithful and

conscientious men, women, boys and girls,

who love the Lord Jesus Christ and love

serving Him at his sacred altar. It is an

honor to be selected as one who serves,

and, truly a ministry to God and Gods

    people.

The word Acolyte comes from the

    Greek word akolouthos, meaning a

servant or attendant who waits continually

    upon another: a follower.

    Acolytes participate in all phases

of the rites and ceremonies of the Church. The Ministry gives our young people an

    opportunity to assume a leadership

position in the Parish, learn our traditions,

and to actively participate in its services in

a very unique and memorable way.

This past year a Customary was

written for St. Johns and all of our

Acolytes have undergone this new training.
