TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 Saint James begins by instructing us that “All good giving and every perfect gift is from above.” We don’t make the rules, but God grants us good gifts that we are to share generously with others. He says, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only . . . Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” We are to care for our brothers and sisters in need, and especially for the children, who are often the forgotten little ones. Jesus further defines what being defiled by the world really means. “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.” Quite a list! Jesus asserts that “All these evils come from within and they defile.” “Not following man-made laws” did not make the list.

HUMAN TRADITION It would be easy to wonder why the disciples ate “with unwashed hands,” especially in those times when dust and dirt were plentiful and the disciples worked with their hands as fishermen. But these scriptures are not concerned so much with physical cleanliness as with spiritual cleanliness. The Pharisees, who were so picky about following every letter of every law, had an “aha” moment in which they saw an opportunity to accuse Jesus and the disciples of breaking the law of Moses. Jesus responds in a very sensible way. He says, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, But their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”

Today’s Readings: Dt 4:1–2, 6–8; Ps 15:2–3, 3–4, 4–5; Jas 1:17–18, 21b–22, 27; Mk 7:1–8, 14–15, 21–23 (Worship Pg.1173 )

ST. ANTHONY’S ADULT CHOIR WELCOMES NEW VOICES! Membership in our Adult Choir is now open. New members are most welcome! Our first rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, September 26th from 7:30pm –9:30pm in the Parish Church. If you are interested in becoming part of our choir that ministers through the joy of music, see our Director of Music, Lisa Chen, or a choir member after Mass on Sunday. PARENTS ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD(REN) TO JOIN OUR CHOIR! In a few weeks, rehearsals for St. Anthony’s Junior Choir will begin. All boys and girls in grades 3-12 are invited. Not only will your child(ren) be receiving an invaluable experience in music education, they also have the opportunity to learn more about the liturgy, and to serve as leaders. By singing in a choir, children “will be better prepared for their eventual role as adult members of the worshiping assembly” (STL55) Our first rehearsal will take place on Sunday, September 30th, in the Parish Church from 2:00-3:00pm. For further information, see Lisa Chen, our Music Director, after Mass. Your child(ren) will have a very enjoyable time and be making a wonderful contribution to the parish’s music ministry.

THE RACHEL MINISTRY Every 20 seconds an unborn child is aborted in the United States. In the 30 years since Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand, the death toll has reached over 55 million. But the statistics do not document the other casualties: the mothers, fathers, grandparents and friends who are emotionally and spiritually affected. The Rachel ministry is a CONFIDENTIAL ministry for those scarred by abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. Come and heal every third Monday of the month at the Marian Shrine in the Cafeteria Building in West Haverstraw, at 7:00pm. The next meeting is on September 17th. For more information call 845-429-2077 or the Marian Shrine at 845-947-2200.
