It was not until late last Sunday afternoon that I first heard news of the mass shooting in Orlando, FL. So we include a special intercession at Mass today for the victims, their families and loved ones, and the first responders. I encourage everyone to keep up those prayers in the days ahead; there is so much finger-pointing going on that we can easily lose sight of how necessary, effective, and essential our prayers are right now.

+ + + I am very pleased to share the news that Lisa Fer-raro has been appointed principal of St. John School. For the past four years, Mrs. Ferraro has served as the instructional specialist for the Catho-lic schools in our region and in Rockland County. Previously, she was an assistant principal at Wash-ingtonville High School, and taught at two high schools in Rockland. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iona College, as well as a certificate of advanced study in educational ad-ministration and supervision from SUNY New Paltz. She holds permanent certification from the New York State Department of Education as a school district administrator. Most importantly, she is a parishioner of St. John’s, knows the com-munity, and is wholeheartedly committed to the principal mission of Catholic schools: helping to bring our students closer to Christ. I know Mrs. Ferraro welcomes our prayers as she begins this new service to the Church.

+ + + More good news: as of Monday, June 13, we have received 207 pledges totaling $967,090 to the Re-new+Rebuild capital campaign. This far exceeds the goal of $816,000 ($753,000 for the campaign, $62,500 for the 2016 Cardinal’s Annual Steward-ship Appeal). Because we are so far ahead, any gifts received from this point on stay entirely with the parish. I am grateful beyond words for every-one’s receptiveness and generosity, whether by pledges or through prayer. In a week or two, I’ll write a bit more about the campaign, especially the lessons I’ve learned from the process. In the meantime, we are happy to accept pledges from anyone who has yet to make one, but would like to do so. As you’ll recall, one of the principal projects to be addressed is the replacement of the windows on the school. A contract has been signed with Kelly Window Systems of Farmingdale, NY, and the work will take place early this fall.

Our annual Vacation Bible Camp is just around the corner (July 18-22); registration forms are available in the vestibule of the church. I cannot strongly enough promote VBC! For more infor-mation, please contact Debby Sheehan (her con-tact information is on the registration form).

+ + + One of our responsibilities is the pastoral care of the residents of the nursing homes and facilities within our parish. These include Campbell Hall Rehabilitation Center; Elant and Glen Arden; and Valley View. In this, we are aided by a very gener-ous group of volunteers, who coordinate and set up for Masses; bring the Eucharist to the residents; and interface with the staffs of the facilities to en-sure that everything goes smoothly. We are in need of additional help with this ministry. If you’re willing and able to commit a few hours each week, or would simply like to learn more, please visit, call or email the parish office.

On Pentecost Sunday, May 15, we selected four parishioners to serve on the parish council, begin-ning this fall. Those chosen are Cynthia Hand, Joseph Brown, Darren Gamma, and Nicholas Pet-raglia. BIBLE BASICS 19: KING DAVID (II SAMUEL 6—24)

As we have shown, most of the Old Testament, especially the Pentateuch and Historical Books, is written as a continuous narrative. Some of this narrative is a string of chronicles, or the telling of one event after another, with poetic verses, genealogies, and etiologies woven in. Within this loose chronology are several important and tightly-structured narratives that seem to give great meaning to all that is happening. We have seen the story of Adam and Eve, the crossing of the Red Sea, and the Joseph Cycle as some of these narratives.

The chronicle of King David contains some of these narratives as well. While, for the most part, the author tells David’s story as a series of exploits, occasionally he slows down and focuses on a specific, meaningful event. In these cases, the narrative slows as the quality of its craftsmanship heightens. We will very briefly look at two of these moments: the promise of a dynasty and David’s sin.

As the chronicle leads us to the establishment of David’s throne in I Samuel 6, his concern turns toward the institution of religion in the kingdom. First, in chapter 5, David has the ark brought to Jerusalem. It is here that David dances “with abandon” before the ark, leading his wife, Michal, to despise him. Then, in chapter 7, “When King David was settled in his palace, and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies on every side,” David sets out to build a temple for the ark. Here, the Lord, who has created the universe with his word, promises a dynasty for David through wordplay. God tells David that he has never wanted a temple, a house in which to dwell. He explains all that he has done for David, and says that he will build a house for David (I Sm 7:1-7). David compares himself to the Lord – he dwells in a house of cedar, while God dwells in a tent (v2). God plays with this metaphor. If the temple is the “house of the Lord,” then the Lord will, first, build a “house of David” – that is, his dynasty. God has moved us swiftly from temple to dynasty, to show us his primacy in providing gifts and what is most important to him – that this be a house to his name (v13). It seems that God is telling about Solomon, who does build the temple. We know that this prophecy, given through Nathan, comes to fulfillment in Christ Jesus, who is God’s own son as well as David’s, whose throne and house to God’s name do stand firm forever (v14).

It is not too long after these pious thoughts that David commits adultery and murder. He has Uriah killed, the husband of Bathsheba, with whom he has committed adultery (I Sm 11). Nathan again manipulates David through words. He gives a parable in which he arouses David’s anger – a wealthy man steals a poor man’s only lamb to feed his guests. Through this, David convicts himself of the crime (12:1-6). Nathan has only to reveal that David is the one to whom he is referring: “You are the man!” (v7). The Lord explains again what he has done for David and will do to him (vv7-12). David repents and does penance, though his child with Bathsheba does die (vv12-24). The rest of David’s chronicle is taken up with the fulfillment of God’s threats – his struggle with his own son Absalom and his other wars (I Sm 13–21). Finally, David the psalmist sings two final songs of thanksgiving before his death (I Sm 22 (cf. Ps 18) and 23).
