Although she has been to the country pre- viously and knows the culture of the region in which she will be living, she is beginning to realize what she does not know about the country and city wich will be her home for the next nine months. She is someone who is flexible enough to be able to accommodate herself to many situations and knows that, over time, she will learn more in her new en- vironment; for the moment, however she is starting to become accustomed to a place where all the an- swers she wants are not readily available. To all appearances, she is treating it as a source of joy. It is a truism that we are all living “in- between times”. It is something to which the church, very early in its history, had to acclimatize itself and it is through the experience of waiting for the Parousia (or “second coming”) that the church learned to sanctify time, to create hours for prayer and to divide the seasons of the liturgical year. This uncertainty is a gift, albeit often a diffi- cult one, and it has given us the richness of our life together as we learn to wait. Part of that gift is a realization that waiting is an active process, an op- portunity to learn about ourselves as we discern God’s will for us and our worshipping community. As we enter such a period in our life at Church of the Holy Trinity, I would encourage all of us to see the months ahead as a gift, a chance to know each other better and the deepest desires of our collective life. We will experience many events together, participate in wonderful worship and chances to work outside our parish walls. Most val- uable of all, however, is the opportunity to live in- to that blessed “in-between” state, embracing the knowledge that “knowing we do not know is the only certainty”, and feeling, in the process, the joy of being lost into Christ. From the Associate Rector...

Let us live with uncertainty as with a friend

to feel certain means feeling secure to feel safe is unreal

a delusion of self knowing we do not know is

the only certainty letting the self be lost into Christ.

    - Esther de Waal I have a friend, a Fulbright Scholar, who is spending an academic year in India beginning this summer. Although she has been to the country pre-viously and knows the culture of the region in which she will be living, she is beginning to realize what she does not know about the country and city wich will be her home for the next nine months. She is someone who is flexible enough to be able to accommodate herself to many situations and knows that, over time, she will learn more in her new en-vironment; for the moment, however she is starting to become accustomed to a place where all the an-swers she wants are not readily available. To all appearances, she is treating it as a source of joy. It is a truism that we are all living “in-between times”. It is something to which the church, very early in its history, had to acclimatize itself and it is through the experience of waiting for the Parousia (or “second coming”) that the church learned to sanctify time, to create hours for prayer and to divide the seasons of the liturgical year. This uncertainty is a gift, albeit often a diffi-

cult one, and it has given us the richness of our life together as we learn to wait. Part of that gift is a realization that waiting is an active process, an op-portunity to learn about ourselves as we discern God’s will for us and our worshipping community.

Please join other CHT women over 40 for another very special gathering and lunch! Cook or pick up a salad, dessert, bread, appetizer or main dish to share. We’ll enjoy lunch together, visit with old friends and meet new ones, and end with a short reading (to be emailed later)

we’ll discuss over dessert. Please reply to Nancy Rasmussen at [email protected] or 215-983-6194 to RSVP and let her know what you’ll be bring-ing. We’re already looking forward to seeing you then!

Dear Friends, We continue to work on developing our parish profile. This involves several components includ-ing an audit of parish membership, gathering historical information, and listening to the stories, concerns, and hopes of the parish. We are working to schedule a date for a parish workshop in early fall which will be announced this month. We are happy to announce that Toneh Williams will be joining the committee, replacing Emily Casey. Please continue to pray for the work of the committee and for the entire CHT parish fam-ily. Letter from Sierra Leone

I thought of all of you today! I didn't go to church to

protect myself from Ebola - they advise to stay away

    from crowds.

I’m well, doing very important work, I believe. God’s

timing is impeccable - last year my presence would not

have been as impactful as this year. The people I’m

teaching seem extremely hungry for tools to deal with

many layers of trauma and exhaustion. They seem very

    grateful for my presence.

I’m enjoying a day of rest at an American missionary's home- with electricity wa-

ter and Internet!!!! The last few days and the week ahead I spend in the extreme

poverty of the country- with the people, living like they do! It's a bit rough, but

    I’ll survive!

Please share with the community that I’m well and that I appreciate their pray-

    ers and yours immensely!

God willing, I’ll be home by next weekend!

    Peace,

    Francesca Nuzzolese

Stewardship Update Thank you to everyone who submitted a pledge since last November. Our ambitious goal was $300,000, and we came close to that goal with 143 pledges to-taling $273,000. If you haven’t pledged yet, or if you pledged and did not receive an acknowledgment letter, please contact the church office. Pledges only account for a portion of our annual budget. We rely on earnings from our endowment to make up the difference. As our church expands programs and seeks to be more generous in the community, your gifts to the church become even more important. Of course, a stewardship campaign is only a means to an end. We need eve-ry member and regular attender to commit to supporting the ministries of our church, but our church is nothing if we don’t constantly strive to use the funds that God has bestowed upon us to cooperative with and more fully live out God’s life and love -- both within our own hearts and minds and in the world around us. Soon it will be time to prepare for next year’s stewardship campaign. We all rec-ognize that we’re in a time of transition due to our Rector’s retirement, but we should never feel as if we’re in “wait and see mode.” Just the opposite... We need to press on with eager expectation of what God has in store for our communi-ty. That means fully engaging with the life of the church, week by week. In his letter to the church in Corinth, the apostle Paul says: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” Over the next few months, we’ll be talking about giving generously in support of God’s work in and through CHT. As we prepare for what’s next, let us all continue to feed upon Christ in Word and Sacrament, and as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, join together in running the race!

    JOYFUL NOISE! Sunday, July 5th

    9:45am

On the first Sunday of each month, between the two regular celebrations of Eucharist, CHT offers a 35 mi-nute, more informal Eucharist intended for all ages.

Joyful Noise gives families an opportunity to worship together in a very relaxed atmosphere, and it also gives all members of the family of the church a chance to experience a different style of worship from time to time. This service's simplified language is accessible to all, and the interactive sermon is conversational and en-gaging. Easy-to-learn songs are accompanied by instru-ments such as piano, guitar, violin, djembe, and even accordion! We are always looking for more instrumentalists for this service. If you are interested, please contact The Rev. Mark Smith at: [email protected] or 215-567-1267. ext. 13

    COMMUNITY CHATTER

On Sunday, July 5th, please don’t

forget to bring in your food donations to be blessed and

then sent to the Food Pantry at St. John’s Hospice, 1221 Race Street!

    * Food Pantries Request Healthier Donations over Bulk and Junk *

    Ideas for what to donate:

    - Low-sugar cereal, such as Cheerios or Chex - Peanut butter - Cans or plastic containers of 100 percent juice - Light or low-sodium canned vegetables - Bags of pinto or black beans - Rice - Canned tuna fish - Powdered milk fortified with vitamin D - Whole wheat pastas

Many commonly donated foods are high in salt, sugar or calories, making them poor choices for people with high blood pressure, diabetes and other diet-related health problems. With more people turning to food banks and for longer pe-riods of time, agency officials say they need donations but they'd like to see people give the kind of healthy and nutritious items they'd serve to their own families.
