BOARDROOM

Good Afternoon All and welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for today’s

Evo-Stik League South Division One South fixture between Winchester City FC

and Moneyfields

We would like to issue a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters

that have made the journey from Portsmouth and we hope you enjoy your

afternoon with us and have a safe journey home.

Merry Christmas to you all – I hope you are enjoying the festive period and that

this afternoon’s game is enjoyable too.

City were beaten last time out with a 3-1 reverse away at Bristol Manor Farm.

The West Country outfit raced into an early lead which meant the game became

an uphill battle after that. Oli Bailey pulled a goal back in the second-half and we

had other chances but it wasn’t our day.

Today we welcome the Moneys to the Simplyhealth City Ground for a Festive

Football Feast – entry is just £5 today for Adults so thank-you all for your

support and see you back here for when we host Mangotsfield United on

Saturday afternoon for our last fixture of 2018.

DAVO’S DIARY Good afternoon and a very happy Christmas to everyone ahead of today’s league match against Moneyfields! I hope that everyone had a great day yesterday and are now looking forward to getting out and about for today’s exciting match. Moneyfields are a very good side, we beat them earlier in the season and at the time I said they will be right up there, which is exactly what has happened and we are under no illusions today will be extremely tough! I wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant stay with us and a safe trip home afterwards. Saturday was a day with slightly mixed emotions, firstly sadness that we lost after a great run of results, however the performance was excellent for the most part, playing against a Bristol Manor Farm side who are extremely expensively assembled and were big favourites to win it this year, they have had a slow start to the season but no doubt they will be in the shake up! We didn’t get going and 2-0 down very early, we had great chances to score before the break whilst they didn’t trouble us after that. 2nd half they scored early to go 3-0 up however we didn’t give up and Oli Bailey scored and then a fantastic save minutes later which would have given us a great chance to get something, instead despite a lot of efforts and corners we couldn’t get back into it! By no means not the result we wanted but in large spells that was a very decent performance on a poor pitch to play football on. Player news we are without Rob Flooks and doubts over Rob Carr for today, rest of the squad are all ready to go, only long term absentee George Short who is nearing a return to training is missing still. One other thing to say is a big thanks to everyone involved in the Christmas party on Thursday and the players’ meal on Saturday, both fantastic nights and enjoyed by everyone! Those nights emphasised to me what a brilliant club I have the honour of managing, with a top-class group of lads who play their hearts out for me and the club, a brilliant chairman and committee and the very best supporters who we all appreciate very much!! Enjoy the game, cheers the boys on and let’s try and end what had been a brilliant 2018 with a bang over these next 2 games. Up the citizens Davo

CLUB HISTORY The club began its current incarnation back in 1987. Having reached to upper age group in the Portsmouth junior, a group of players decided to continue playing as Portsmouth Civil Service reserves. Gradually most of the players moved up to the first team and by 1991 the side had risen from the Portsmouth League to Hampshire League division one on the back of three successive promotions. The club's league success was matched in cup competitions with Portsmouth Senior Cup wins in 1991 and 1992, and Hampshire Intermediate Cup victories in 1992 and 1993. After several seasons in the upper reaches of the Hampshire League, it became apparent that the club would have to

move away from their home at Copnor Road if they were to progress.

After scouring the city, the club agreed a lease on the old Moneyfields sports ground in Copnor, and so, in 1994, it

moved to its current ground and became part of the club whose name they now carry. The Division One years were

particularly successful and under the management of George Wain and Mickey Gee, Moneys never finished lower

than sixth and clinched the 1996/97 league championship by 15 points. Success on the field was matched by

extensive ground developments off it thanks to a national lottery sports fund grant. New changing rooms, offices

and a floodlit all-weather pitch were constructed as part of the scheme to bring the facilities up to Wessex League

standard. With the requisite developments in place, the 1997/98 campaign saw a tense battle with Blackfield and

Langley to see who would claim a spot in the Jewson Wessex league. Although Blackfield just pipped them in the

table, Moneyfields' better facilities meant it was they who claimed promotion. The first season in the Wessex league

saw the club surprise many people by finishing sixth.

The next couple of seasons saw the club post respectable top-ten finishes, but, after finishing a disappointing

sixteenth in 2000/01, Messrs Wain and Gee decided to step down after 13 seasons charge. Under the managerial

partnerships of Calvin Hore and Terry Arnold/Paul Gregory, and Craig Stafford and Miles Rutherford, the club has

established itself in the middle third of the table as well as embarking on a series of runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase.

The management line up was boosted in 2004/05 by the arrival of Bobby De St Croix and Alan Smith from Havant and

Waterlooville. Where the duo management led us to mid table, for two seasons and getting to the final of the

Portsmouth senior cup in 2005/06 losing 4-3 to Gosport borough at west leigh park. And in 2006/07 finishing 3rd

round of the FA Vase against AFC Totton 2007/08 Saw the sudden departure midseason of Craig Stafford, leading a

season to finishing 7th in the league. Finishing as Runners up in the league cup from Wimborne town who beat us up

by 1-0. And reaching the 2nd Qualifier in the FA Cup against Team Bath. 2008/09 Saw Moneyfields Best Start to the

season leading the remaining 21 teams for a short period of time, and seeing young Connor Bailey Scoring Moneys

100th Goal of the season. The Season Ending positively with the first team and reserves both Finishing third in the

table. 2009/10 saw Moneyfields, worst season at home, with only 5 home wins all season leaving the club in

12th place. The Reserves ending in 4th place. After five seasons of Moneyfields Glory Bobby St Croix

Retired as Manager.

Replaced by Former Manager Micky Gee son Graeme Gee who has also been a very loyal player to the team over the

years. 2010/11 Season saw us finishing seventh, in the Wessex Premier, with Warren Hunt topping a club record of

35 goals in a season, beating Previous Top Season Goal Scorer Lee Moulds. The Reserves Finishing Fourth in The

Wessex Combination, with the reserves losing 1-0 In the final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup against Horndean.

2011/12 Season saw us finishing Fourth in the Wessex Premier with Former AFC Bournemouth player Steve Hutchins

finishing Top Goal Scorer of the Season at 34 Goals. The Reserves Finishing Fourth in the new forms Wyvern

Combination Football League Premier Division With the reserves losing for the second year in the row in the

Portsmouth senior cup Final against United services, being hosted at the glorious Fratton Park Grounds losing 4-3.

2012/13 finalists in the Portsmouth Senior Cup ended when the Club won the trophy in 2013. 2013/14 were losing

finalists in the Portsmouth Senior Cup. 2014-15 season saw us finishing Fourth Wessex Premier league and reaching

second round FA Vase.

2015-2016 Saw Moneyfields manager Miles Rutherford resign after 12years been replaced with Dave Carter from

Horndean take over as manager in October then finishing eighth in the Wessex Premier league and seeing

Moneyfields reaching the fourth of the FA Vase and seeing the reserves finishing second in the Wyvern Combination

Football League Premier Division.

2016/17, Moneyfields finished top of the table in Wessex Premier for three days after the FA took three points away

for playing an illegible player giving the title to Portland Utd, Moneys still got promoted to Evo-Stik Southern League

East division 2017-18 season.

2017/18 Moneys finished 10th Evo-Stik Southern League East division and entered FA Trophy for the first in their

MALCOLM’S MUSINGS We welcome Moneyfields to Winchester for today’s Boxing Day fixture. Earlier in the season we gave an excellent

team performance in winning 2-0 at Dover Road with goals in each half from Jamie Barron and Oli Bailey giving us

victory. However, Moneyfields are at the time of writing in the playoff places with only two league defeats and these

being at the hands of AFC Totton and ourselves in August. They also reached the 3rd qualifying round of the F A Cup.

This match sees the return to the Simplyhealth City Ground of Joe Briggs who was at Winchester two years ago, and

Moneyfields have several well-known players such as Felipe Barcelos and Dan Wooden, Sam Pearce and Brett Poate.

Poate captained Gosport during the season they reached the final of the F A Trophy.

I first saw a game involving Moneyfields in the 1998/99 season when they first played in the Wessex League. That

season Eastleigh beat them 4-2 on their home pitch going into half time with a 4-0 lead which meant all the goals

were scored at the same end of the pitch, while Moneyfields’s 3-1 win at Eastleigh later in the season effectively

ended the league title hopes of the team from Ten Acres. I remember Simon Fitt and Simon Hayes joining Eastleigh

from Moneyfields and the skilful and experienced Calvin Hore being the Moneyfields player manager. Jamie White

who scored prolifically during his time at Winchester is also a former Moneyfields player.

Moneyfields went on to become consistent performers in the Wessex League and in 16 of their last 19 seasons at this

level finished in the top half of the table. Having finished runners up in 2016/17 they were promoted to the Southern

League and finished a respectable 10th in their first season with 19 wins and 69 points from 42 games and this season

joined our division. I have been to their ground several times usually making the 25-minute walk from Hilsea station.

We have played them many times during our Wessex League days. Many people will remember the name

Moneyfields Sports featuring in the Hampshire League as recently as the 1980's. However, the process by which the

current outfit became members of this league really began when a new team was founded in 1987 as Portsmouth

Civil Service. The new outfit quickly rose through the Portsmouth League winning the championship in 1991 and they

joined the Hampshire League at the start of the 1991/92 season.

They won Hampshire Division 3 in the first season, Hampshire Division 2 in their second season and also won the Portsmouth Senior Cup and Hampshire Intermediate Cup as they begun to climb the non-league pyramid. In their first season in Hampshire League Division 1 they finished third, they followed this up with sixth place in their second season and fourth place in their third. When they moved to the Moneyfields ground in Moneyfields Avenue for the 1994/95 season they renamed themselves Moneyfields Sports and as such won the Hampshire League in 1996/97. In 1997/98 themselves and Blackfield had a thrilling battle for the title which went right to the wire. Both clubs as did Poole who finished third had superb records in terms of games won and goal difference.
