Greetings, One of the important actions taken by our Mission Committee and approved by our Session was to register Covenant Presbyterian Church as a “Matthew 25 Church” with our denomination. The Presbyterian Mission Agency of the Presbyterian Church (USA) describes it this way on our denominational website: Matthew 25:31–46 calls all of us to actively engage in the world around us, so our faith comes alive and we wake up to new possibilities. Convicted by this passage, both the 222nd and 223rd General Assemblies (2016 and 2018) exhorted the PC(USA) to act boldly and compassionately to serve people who are hungry, oppressed, imprisoned or poor. Let’s take a look at what Jesus said in Matthew 25: For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me… Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:35-36, 40). We are presently showing this logo on the front of our Sunday worship bulletin: This will also be a sign to be displayed in our courtyard over the sanctuary doors. I mention this because as we “regather” following the shared trauma of pandemic, it is natural and reasonable to ask: Who are we?” The answer is: WE are a Matthew 25 Church! And this means that we care about human need and suffering all around us. We care because Jesus cares! This gives us our purpose in days ahead. My salvation throughout pandemic has been the opportunity I have had to volunteer at Misión Peniel every Friday throughout this long, long marathon. It has been meaningful and powerful to put groceries into the hands of those in great need, as well as give treats to the children of farmworkers in Immokalee, to see their glee and hear them THE CLARION: THE NEWSLETTER OF COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, AUGUST 2021
