REGISTER NEWs Apologies In my brief review of Swiss specialmiddotbodied Y-Types in the last issue I forgot to mention the Keller-bodied car Y1225 And the probable reasoD Vtlly I forgoi to include it was that I was concentrating on the other cars all of which seem to fall into a small batch between chassis numbers Yi D66 and YI381 If I may speculate as JHKeller bad pre-war experience of producing special bodies for MO saloons and --ere I believe the official importers of Mns into Switzerland they may have been given preference in the allocation of crassis only for potential rebodyiog Then once me other Swiss coach-builders rad seen Kellers effort they might have thought to do likewise io competitioo and hence ordered some of the cars (as chassis only ) which we cow know fa U into the range YI366 to Y 1381

Eisevihere in this isslie there should be a couple of recent pictures of the Reinbolt amp Christe car Y1366 Trus car was featured on page 63 of roy 1988 book on the YmiddotType It seems to be looking a bit shabby these days but fortunately retains the special Reinbolt amp Christe badge between the rear of the bonnet side and the door Again note the diffe rences in styling between Y1366 and me cars featured in TCY 192

Further research indicates lha the assumption that Ihe Z 12488 Plate did nOi cont inue into early YB produc tion is incorrect YBI029 i cliTies a Z 12488 PlaI~ v ilh the seq uence num ber 522 and it has been calculated that this number fit s closely enough in lo the sequence to make it probable that thi s version of tile plate did cont inue on from late Y productio n into ea rly VB prod ucti on

In add ition the suggeslion that YBOmiddotmiddotU 1 may these da~ s be fi ned with the incorrect version of the Nuffield Plate may well a lso be incorrect A little bit more is now known abou t the Body numbers an d Nu ffield 1-1e131 Products Plate numbers of these C3 rs than when the book was publ ished and although an ~arie YB (YBI0362) was fitled with 3

later version of the -N uffi eld plate a check o f the Body Nu mbers shows that the fi rst of the two numbers for YB 044 1 (595 2J277) is considerabl y earl ie r than that for YB0362 (5993205) It is thoughT that th e N uftie ld plate was already on the body shell and th e li rst o r the Body numbers was al read~- app lied to the Body No Pla te when (he bod y she lls a rrived at Abingdon A fter the bod ies moved do n the product ion line and were completed the second o f the two Body N umbers was added Wnat poss ibly happened in thi s case (and no do ubt in other cases as well ) was thai one of the body she lls was held back from going down the produc ti on Ime (perhaps due to some damage or someth ing simi lar) and when it did eventuall y ente r th e produc tion line (still tined vith its Nuffi e ld plate and Body No plate Wilh the firs t number stamped on) it was then gi ven a C1r No (ie ) 8 0441) in sequence with ~Jrs on (he li ne and when completed a second Body No a lso in sequence with those on the line Thus [h is car would ben be equi pped with an earlie r Nuffield plate than auld be expected from its Car No and a Body No w ith the first part apparently out of sequence

Chapter 12 Para 6c Page 176 and TCY 190 pp 3 to 6

An interest ing anomaly is that the fi rst prototype ca r was fi ned with a Rear Tunnel Carpet Piece mounted on millboard w ith the handbrake ~ab les etc hidden The only dif ference be tween th is ticti ng and that o f all the later prod uction cars was that the rear edge o f this Tunnel Piece seemed to go through the heelboard panel wi th the rear edge not be ing bound with Rex ine This fi n ing was seen on a pho togrnph o f the prototype car ta ken on 20 Ju ne 1946

Why he fitt ing of this T unne l Piece was changed for early cars and then changed back for the great majority of produ~tion remains a mystery

With this Issue I am going to begin serialising what for many years I have called the Reference Library This is by way of being a sonmiddotof index [0 ref plus a linle bit more in that it also lists magazine etc articles relevant to V-Types which have not (yet) appeared in rCY To call it a Referecce Library gives the (erroneous) impress ion that I cWTemly hold copies of aU the literarure somiddot listed but that is no longer the case These listings will appear by category (for example Engine Suspension Historical Braking System etc) in no particular order and to fit the available space when I am short of other meaningful material for ICY So we will start off this time with a somewhat shon (lessmiddottban-onemiddotpage) listing Dare 1 say if anyone knows of any (nocmiddotlnternet I e printedwritten) items which I don t know about would they please let me have details so that I can add to the listings These listings are io no way claimed to be exhaustive but might be of some interest and help to the reader
