Gathering or The FaithfUl - Mk=l

EVer heard ot a tGOpt or wondered what it wa~ I dld~ r knew that GOFs were rallies held in the United States which hundreds of beautifUlly restored T-Type and their owners attended but I didnt know what the initials stood for until recently The Gathering Of The FaithfUl is aptly named for MG~ f ans in the United States exhibit a proround~slncere and devote~ enthusiasm for the marque MG

I was lucky enough this June to be invited by Walter Genther of New York to visit him for a week and attend the ~2nd GOY organised by the New England MGT Register Ltd hich was held in the sWptuous surroundings of the Playboy Great Gorge Resort amp Caun~ Club~McAfeeNew Jersey

For the purposes- of this Y-orien tated report I wilI lea~e aut much mention of the hundreds of beautifnlXy restored TsoPs (and a Z) which attended surfice it to say that if you like ather HGa besides the Y then tbis is for you IttS quite an overwhelming

experience Before we droe down or the GOF from Walts homejust ttnder one hundred miles awayI was shown his beautifUllyresto~d YT which he rebuilt entirely himself from a total wreck and which wan first placein tIle Premier Cla (top prize taking in all the T as well t) at GOF a Collple of years ago There are so few restored YTts flr England that seeing thi~ earwa~ an education Walt can answer most queries on the Tourer~he me ~ cfrawings tor the sides-creens and had them made up an-d he rewired the ea~middot by amalgamating a TC iring diagram Jor the instrument panel with a YA diagram tor the rest o~ the ~

And so to the GOY we drove dawn on the first day or this- raux-day how in WaltS YB tram his home to the Playboy Club The journey took nearly two hours at a-bout 55 mph and the car- behaved perfectly It was loaded with five people (Walts family) and _luggage That evening and the next day mallY cars arrIved and other Y-Type owners we met were Tom Boscarino (who organised th~ GOF)~Mike Ash~R1chard Boudrais Jim Goguen (or Abingdon S~ares Ltd)Hank GirfenMel ReichenbachRichard TrenerCharles Fa1llkner and Le- amp Susan Polgar On the Friday there was a tRegalia Sa-Iemiddot where I acquired three copies of the YT Parts List 1 We als-o met Mike Lewis from near New Orleanswho was hoping to buy a YT and who told us he knew of several more Xs in that area Tom Boscarino revea2ed that he knew of six YT1~ in South Africa and he has alot of inrormation an this particular sub-type AI Moss of CaliforniaHank Giffen and Mike Ash bave insisted that I stop refering to Y~ as the offical designations were Y YB and 11 This 1s true and it is something we men tioned in an early issue of the magazinePohowever I think that most people in the U - would become eonfused at this stage i~ we were to start refering to YA~ as ~Ys~ - so remember p1ea~erYA is just en unofficial designation

The Friday had been cool (55 F)overcast and so~ewhat windy For the main day of the show howeverthe Saturday the temperature climbed back up to its usual mid-eighty figure and I quickly got sunburned as we were outside all day with the cars Hank Giffen and his wife arrived in their brown and beige Y Penelope ear2y in the day and this car was soon confirmed to be the oldest one we know of an the Register (Y 0296) Les and Susan Polgar arrived from Connecticut in Harriet (Green 1949 Y
