We were recently investigating a shidduch for our daughter and everyone said wonderful things about the boy. My friend, however, said I should dig deeper and �nd “the real story” by speaking to the girl to whom this boy had once been engaged. I have heard that the broken engagement was very acrimonious, but then again, maybe she has real, important info on this bochur. Am I allowed to call her?

You are allowed to call and ask her what went wrong with the shidduch from her perspective. What you are not allowed to do is to believe and accept everything she says as if it is a fact. Instead, you need to �le away that information as being “possibly true” and then follow up with further investigation to discover whether she saying the truth, exaggerating it a bit or outright lying.

My friends and I like to sit in the park on Shabbos afternoons and the conversation inevitably turns to our kids—what they’re up to, what trouble they made, etc. �is week, my mother, who was visiting, gently suggested that this practice might be considered lashon hara. I’m wondering if it truly is prohibited to talk about our kids with one another when we generally mean it in a humorous way. On another note, what if we are doing it to “vent” or to get advice from fellow parents?

Children are supposed to behave like children. Speaking about what would be considered normative behavior for children, even if it something that may have exasperated you at the time, is not lashon hara, since this is the way normal children behave. �ere is nothing “bad” about them or what they did. In the atypical case, where a child did something so completely out of normative behavior that it would be embarrassing to the child if others were to �nd out about it, it may be considered lashon hara to spread the word about that for no good reason. In a situation where you must speak about it in order to get advice or help, it is permitted to talk about it. Obviously, whatever embarrassing details that are not critical to the question at hand, should be omitted.

I am a high school homeroom teacher and I really try to get involved with my students. One girl, who is considered very “good” recently told me something extremely shocking, on the condition that I not tell anyone about it. Her secret doesn’t involve her own or others’ safety, nor is it a spiritual threat to others around her, but she did break a major school rule. Am I permitted—or required—to break my word and tell the school?

�e girl who trusted you with her private secrets, obviously expects you to keep that information private. Unless, as you say, there is a clear danger to the child or to the others, it is forbidden for you to share that information with others, even with your superiors. If the information that you received involves a illegal activity or a crime, and the laws in your state require you to divulge that information, then you need to consult a rav and an attorney knowledgeable in these laws and follow their advice.

My best friend asked me to be a reference for her in shidduchim. She is a great girl but, of course, she has her �aws, as all of us do. Am I allowed to gloss over her �aws when the calls come in, or do I need to point them out? If I am required to point them out, can you give me guidelines so that I can be sure I am not in breach of hilchos lashon hara?An individual who is asked for information about a shidduch must divulge what he knows regarding a “major de�ciency.” One who deliberately withholds such information transgresses the prohibition of lifnei iver lo sitein michshol, You shall not place a stumbling block before the blind (Vayikra 19:13). As interpreted by the Rabbis, this means that one may not give bad advice to an unsuspecting person. One also transgresses other Biblical prohibitions.

�e poskim give some examples of information that may not be withheld in a prospective match [and which, if withheld, may invalidate a marriage]: serious physical or mental illness, infertility, accurate �nancial status, lack of religious observance, previous marital status, previous illicit relationships, conversion, adoption.

One is not required to divulge a de�ciency which most people do not consider to be an impediment, such as a minor illness, a physical weakness or a minor blemish in one’s lineage. Similarly, it is not required to divulge a transgression in the distant past for which the sinner has repented.

Detrimental information about a shidduch may be conveyed only with the proper intention—for the bene�t of one of the parties, not in revenge or out of spite. Even then, the information may only be relayed when 1) �e condition is serious. 2) �e condition has not been exaggerated. 3) �ere is a reasonable chance that the information will be accepted and acted upon. If it is likely to be ignored, it is prohibited to relay it.

One who is unsure if a particular point of information is a major de�ciency or if the above conditions have been met should consult a rav before divulging or withholding any information.

The Medrash gives a parable: There was a King who wanted to build a palace and

scouted around for an appropriate site. He went into one city after another and in each city the people ran away from him, indicating they did not want the palace in their town. Finally he came to a deserted ghost town and the few people there graciously and gratefully accepted the King’s offer to build a palace in their town. The King said, “This is the place where I will build my palace.”

The Medrash explains the parable: When G-d wanted to give the Torah, he went to the sea and it ran away, as it is written “The sea saw and fled” [Tehillim 114:3]. G-d then went to the mountains and they ran away, as it is written “The mountains skipped like rams” [114:4]. He then came to a desolate desert (Sinai), which accepted Him with open arms, and G-d gave the Torah in a desert.

What are our Rabbis trying to tell us with this parable?

Why didn’t those cities want the King’s palace? Because they knew that building the palace in their cities would impact on their lifestyle. They had certain ways of doing things; they had certain customs. They knew that building a palace in their city would mean changes for them. The ghost town knew that it had nothing. They were saying, as it were, “Remake us. We have nothing anyway. We want you. We’ll accept you and we’ll take with your palace all the changes that accompany it.”

If one wants to accept Torah, he must be like a desert -- ready and open with no baggage. Torah takes root in a person who says, “Change me.”

Many of us have had the experience of dealing with apparently “religious” brethren and have sometimes come away disappointed. Our reaction invariably is “This is Torah? This

is all that Torah can do for a person? I thought Torah was supposed to change a person! Here is a stereotypical guy with ‘beard and payos’ and he is ripping me off!”

Someone once said, and it is a very important point: “Never judge Judaism by Jews.” Judaism is bigger than most any Jew that one will find. If one wants to judge Judaism by a particular Jew, he must look at the Chofetz Chaim or Rav Chaim Ozer or Rav Moshe Feinstein. Why? Because they made themselves like a desert and said, as it were, to G-d, “Change me.” They let themselves become desolate and open for the Torah to permeate them.

The rest of us are like those cities. We are not really ready to fully change. If we accept it, we want to accept it on our terms. Therefore the Torah cannot change us, because we are not willing to be changed.

This is what our Sages are hinting at when they tell us that Torah was given in a desert. Torah can only really change someone who is willing to be changed. When a person makes himself like a desert in his acceptance of Torah, that is when he can be changed to the extent that G-d can say, “You are My Servant, Israel, in whom I can be glorified.” [Yeshaya 49:3]

When people are not prepared to make themselves like the desert, the Torah can not make them over. The result is that sometimes we find people to be less than we would expect.

Steak (on the bone) 1 T. Onion soup mix 1 T. Olive Oil Garlic powder Minced garlic Paprika 1 T. Soy sauce Salt

Put steak into Ziploc plastic bag. Pour olive oil into Ziploc bad and move the bag around to let the oil saturate the steak. Rub minced garlic on both sides of steak. Sprinkle remaining spices and soy sauce. Let the steak marinate in refrigerator for at least one hour.

Cover a 9x13 an with foil. Make slots in the foil with your fork. Place the steaks on top of the foil. Bake at 350 for twelve minutes on each side.

Turn over to broil. Broil steaks for 5-7 minutes and SERVE!

The Midrash tells us that every time that G-d spoke to Moshe to teach

him a new law or issue a new command, He first called to Moshe in a loving way, saying, “Moshe, Moshe,” who would in turn respond, “Hineini, I am here, ready to serve You” (Toras Kohanim). Rabbi Matisyahu Salomon, when discussing this fact from the Midrash, asks the obvious question. Why? Was the great Moshe, our leader, and inspiration, who inspires us still, an unmotivated student whom G-d needed to coax by speaking lovingly? This is of course ridiculous, there was no more motivated student than he. Rabbi Salomon’s premise: it’s not about motivation, it’s a statement about the essence of Torah. Teaching Torah is not like teaching other subjects such as math or science, where all that matters is the expert’s knowledge and skill in imparting that knowledge. One who teaches Torah must teach it with love. It can only be learned in the context of a loving relationship with one’s teacher.

This got me thinking. Why is it so important to teach Torah this way? Why not just teach the materials and the skills? What’s love got to do with it? And then it struck me that the message that Rabbi Salomon is so eloquently conveying is that while it may be good enough for the knowledge of math, or science, to enter one’s mind, it’s not good enough for Torah. Because Torah has to pierce one’s heart, and it has to be internalized, impacting emotions as well as intellect. When Torah is taught in the context of a loving relationship, the love bonds the student to the teacher, and the Torah, its laws, messages, values, and beauty, become a part of him.

Let’s talk about parents and children. Parents teach their children most of what is important in life. Parents teach about sharing, playing fair, how to act when one is angry, hurt, sad, or happy. They teach

compassion and caring for others, and they teach about cruelty and how it is not acceptable. They teach too about G-d, and show how it’s possible to form a real relationship, even an intimate one with Him. Most of how they teach life’s lessons is taught by example, modeling a life of being careful of the dignity of others, the beauty of Torah spirituality, and the power of building a real, lifelong relationship with G-d. Modeling assertive communication instead of aggression, and gentle, oh so gentle criticism, delivered sparingly. As parents we need to be aware of our role as life teachers and to remember the lesson of Moshe, Moshe. Teaching facts and formulas are important, and teaching rules of behavior, and our traditions and beliefs are essential. But if we want our children to truly grow, to retain the message, to internalize its truth, and to feel its beauty, it needs to be taught lovingly, not intimidatingly, especially if we want to hear our children’s response saying “Hineini, I am here and ready to follow you.”

For bottom layer:

Mix together the cake mix, melted butter or margarine and eggs on medium until smooth.

Pour onto greased jelly roll pan ( approx. 17 x 13)

Smooth with spatula to all corners, it will be pretty thin.

For top layer:

Mix together powdered sugar, eggs and cream cheese. Pour onto bottom layer of jelly roll pan. Smooth with spatula to all corners.

Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes until golden.

Bottom layer: 1 box yellow cake mix 1 stick butter or margarine, melted 2 eggs

Top layer: 4 cups powdered sugar 2 eggs 8 oz. cream cheese (parve can be used)
