Instructional Rounds, as taken by the book Instructional Rounds in Education by Elizabeth A. City, Richard F. Elmore, Sarah E. Fiarman, and Lee Teitel: “Inspired by the medical rounds model used by physicians, the authors of Instructional Rounds in Education have pioneered a new form of professional learning known as Instructional Rounds Networks. Through this process, education leaders and practitioners develop a shared understanding of what high-quality instruction looks like and what schools and districts need to do to support it.”

This day will be focused on introducing you and your district leadership team to Instructional Rounds. Participants learn a research-based observation and questioning protocol, how to create a structure for Instructional Rounds within their organization, discuss common pitfalls and considerations for teachers, administrators, central office, or board members, and how to link Instructional Rounds work to building and district school improvement plans.

EPINEPHRINE

If you are newly appointed or need a refresher on the use of an auto-injector, this session is for you!

Presented by Peggy Hamel, BSN, CPNP, and Karen Kortebein, BSN, RN, of the Berrien County Health Department

August 17, 2016, 1 - 3 p.m. OR August 18, 2016, 8:30-10:30 a.m.

at Berrien RESARegistration deadline for both sessions is August 12, 2016 (no registration fee)

Medications administration guidelines from the Michigan Department of Education require training for non-nursing staff on the use of an epinephrine auto-injector conducted under the supervision of, and shall include evaluation by a licensed, registered professional nurse. In order to receive a renewed (or new) prescription (RX) for the 2016-2017 school year from Dr. Johansen of the Berrien County Health Department, it is a requirement of at least one person per building within a district to be retrained or newly trained. With your prescription, you will have the opportunity to appy for free epi-pens. Remember, each school building with 10 or more instructional and administrative staff is required to have at least two employees trained and schools with less than 10 staff are required to have at least one trained staff member. You are certainly encouraged to have more staff trained than the required to be better equipped in the event of an anaphylactic reaction.

A Day with Penny KittleIgnite ♥ Book Love ♥ in Your Middle School & High School Students

“There is nothing without joy.” Penny Kittle provides educators with a powerful reminder: students need to experience joy when they are reading, or teachers will never reach them.

Penny advocates that through prioritizing students first and then teaching the curriculum; teachers have a chance at cultivating lifelong committed and passionate readers. The average freshman college class requires between 100-600 pages of reading per week.

If students’ weekly goals in reading revolve around earning a grade or a calculation, students will not be adequately prepared for the rigorous reading expectations of college and career. Students should be reading because they can’t put the book down, not because they need the

“A” in the course to maintain their GPA. Teachers must work to refine the essential ‘with-it-ness’ characteristic of engaged teachers: these teachers watch, pay attention, respond to students, and seek the spark that says students are thinking.
