Telephone hybrids, ortelephone balance units (TBUs)provide the interface betweenprofessional audio equipmentand the public telephonenetwork.

They provide protection for yourequipment and the public telephone lines,allowing for varying line signals and lineconditions. Automatically cancelling outthe unwanted signal they also facilitatetwo-way communication down a singletelephone line.

Each hybrid has a telephone lineconnection, a handset connection andseparate terminals for audio input andoutput from a broadcast mixer, or otherprofessional audio source.

A large proportion of Sonifex hybrids areused in radio and television broadcastingapplications for allowing external callers to

be connected to the studio mixing console.Most of the other units are supplied tocommunication operations for allowingextremely effective conversion between 4-wire audio circuits and standardtelephone lines.

A ringing detector can be used when youneed to answer a call automatically, forinstance, if a journalist files a report to atape recorder over a telephone line, the callcan be picked up after a set number of ringsby the ringing detector. Both the HY-03 &DHY-03 have a built in ringing detector thatis enabled by one of the configurationsettings switches on the rear panel.

Analogue or Digital ?Sonifex offers two different hybrid units -the HY-03 analogue TBU and the DHY-03DSP based TBU.

The analogue HY-03 hybrid is suitable formost general telephony applications and isoften used in radio and TV stations, dealingfloors and bingo halls. The HY-03 can beused for any application where a cleantelephone signal is required and the line isnot subject to signal delay.

The DHY-03 offers near perfectperformance, using DSP power todramatically improve the unit's operation.The DHY-03 offers the features of the HY-03,but has some other benefits: • Echo cancellation is possible and

distortion of other mixed signals isgreatly improved.

• Digital hybrids are more tolerant tofluctuating line conditions and areespecially suitable for dealing with callsthat have a slight signal delay, forexample, satellite and conference calls.The DHY-03 can recall signals from itsmemory buffer and allow for these delayswithout impairing performance.

Note that both of these products areoperating on analogue telephone lines, not ISDN digital lines. The "analogue" and"digital" refer to the processing used in the units.

The analogue HY-03 telephonehybrid is the replacement forthe HY-02, which for manyyears has set the standard as anexcellent value, high qualitytelephone hybrid.

The HY-03 retains many of the features ofthe HY-02 and adds some additional ones.Some of the features of the HY-03 include :• Fully automatic - adapts to varying line

conditions and has automatic signallimiting.

• Local and remote line hold switching -calls can be remotely switched through a mixing console.

• Momentary or permanent latchingremotes can be enabled.

• Balanced mic/line input - 10kΩ balancedinput selectable for 0dBu clean feed line,or microphone level with adjustable gain.

• Balanced output - 0dBu low impedancebalanced output, with output gainadjustment.

• Mixed output - the output can be a mixof the caller and mic/line input signals for

recording both sides of the telephoneconversation.

• Integrated ring detector - automatic callanswering after a pre-determinednumber of rings.

• Fitted with K-break disconnect detectionas standard with an option for dial-tonedisconnect (HY-03DTD option).

Which Format Is Most Suitable ?The HY-03 analogue hybrids are available inthree models :

HY-03 Single free-standing automaticanalogue TBU.

HY-03S Single 19" rack mounted automaticanalogue TBU with ringing detector.

HY-03T Twin 19" rack mounted automaticanalogue TBU.

Additionally, a eurocard size analogue hybridHY-02EC and ringing detector RD-02EC are still available from the existingHY-02 range. Eurocards are supplied without a power supply, or casing, and aretherefore significantly cheaper than theother units. The cards can be slotted into arack and located by the bracket at the frontof the card. They are mainly used in mixingconsoles, or other systems, which have beendesigned specifically with slots to holdeurocard equipment.
