Ge ng to Know the Holy Spirit

Heard any good Ghost stories lately? If not, we’ll tell some

prey good Holy Ghost stories during October, as we will

center our worship on exploring the Holy Spirit thru Scrip-

ture and preaching. Some"mes, it seems like the Holy Spir-

it is le$ out when we think about God, and yet there is

much that Scripture has to say about the Holy Spirit. So

we’re going to explore the Holy Spirit as a ‘full-member’ of

the Trinity. Some"mes I think we downgrade the Holy Spir-

it - can you imagine? We’re also going to talk about how

the Holy Spirit has moved in some powerful conversions

described in Scripture. We’ll spend some "me discussing

how the Holy Spirit creates and reshapes community. Finally we’ll focus on the trans-

forma"ve power of the Holy Spirit in our faith life.

I hope that you’ll begin to see the Holy Spirit in a whole new light as we move through

October together. The Holy Spirit is God’s presence that enables all the movements

that I’ve been preaching about during the last few months. We can’t begin to learn

what it means to be a disciple, take care of one another, and then act in Chris"an love

apart from the Holy Spirit. Only with the Spirit’s equipping and enabling are growth

and vitality possible. Some"mes we’ve associated the presence of the Holy Spirit only

in those church tradi"ons where there is great outward expression and many mo"ons.

Such as in the speaking and interpre"ng of tongues. But perhaps we can appreciate the

presence of the Spirit also in quiet and simple ways. At the same "me, we need to

begin to let go of the idea that the Spirit is contained within our expecta"ons and cate-

gories. Maybe the Holy Spirit does want us to speak from "me to "me, maybe the Spir-

it is leading us to do something with our hands in worship. God is free. And the Holy

Spirit, may be the most mysterious way that God con"nues to move. This shouldn’t

frighten us, it should excite us! So come and see what Scripture has to say about the

Holy Ghost and we’ll pray for Spirit-filled worship!

I hope to see you Sunday.

LUMP Update

Luray United Methodist Preschool

is Open & Lively!

We have 22 kids, 3 teachers and 2 assistants! Susan Lloyd

is teaching the Threes. She has a class of eight kids. Sue

Raeburn will con"nues to teach one class of the Fours

with seven students and Carol Angier will teach a new

class of Fours with seven students. Jane Thompson will

con"nue to assist the teachers and students this year

with the help of Donna Epping. Donna Epping recently

re"red from teaching in Page County Schools. We wel-

come both Carol and Donna to our preschool this year.

Many hands have helped to get the preschool ready for

the fall. We had many volunteers empty out rooms, clean

and polish floors and then set up the rooms again. Walt

Surra built cubbies to accommodate our ten new stu-

dents. David Angier is building and repairing storage

shelves. David also installed fencing to provide a small

play area for kids at church. Thank you to Mike Weaver

for installing our Big Preschool Sign outside the churches

educa"on wing.

Thanks to all who support this ministry. God con"nues to

demonstrate His truth in the statement, “Where God

guides, He provides.”

Please come and visit us some"me. We welcome visits.

If you are interested in volunteering on a regular or irreg-

ular basis come and talk to us. Kids love to have some

one on one "me with an adult while they listen to stories,

play with board games, playdough etc.

We covet your prayers. God is good!

MISSION NEWS…

Jeff Jennings is leading a mission trip to Virginia Beach

from October 9-15. The mission team will be staying in a

church and will be repairing homes that were flooded. You

can go for the full week, or a par1al week. Contact Jeff for

more informa1on. Packets for each person a3ending are

required. Packets can be found in the church office.

Disaster Cleaning Buckets: We have been collec1ng items

for Disaster Relief Cleaning Buckets! We appreciate ALL

the amazing outpouring of Love! Thank you to all who

have supported this effort.

Loaves & Fishes Ministry has begun again…

MaDhew 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me

something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me

something to drink…..

This ministry is a program for children aending Luray Ele-

mentary school. For a variety of reasons, their families

struggle to provide their children with needed food. Bags

are packed every week during the school year, and distrib-

uted every Friday. There is an assortment of nutri"onal

and easy-fix foods, for each child in the program. Our

church provides oatmeal packets and cans of Vienna sau-

sages. You can place dona"ons in the gray tote in the sanc-

tuary by the grocery cart. Last year we had 80 children

enrolled. The cost for each child is approximately $20 per

week, $180 per year.

This is our fi$h year of helping local children in need.

Would you prayerfully consider how you could contribute

to this ministry?

Our church packs and delivers bags to Luray Elementary in

September and February. Volunteers are Welcome.

We appreciate you praying for the financial needs of the

ministry and the children involved.

Sponsoring a child for the year is $180. You may also make

a one "me dona"on to the program. Just place in the offer-

ing plate on Sunday & mark it Loaves & Fishes in the memo

sec"on.

Please contact Sharon Surra 860-9789 or Beverly Wood

860-0795 or call the church office, if you are interested in

becoming involved in this ministry.

Chrismons Repair Workshop

Please come to the LUMW mee"ng on Monday, Oct. 16

at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Several of the Chrismons are

missing a sequin, bead, or s"tch and need to be repaired. We

won’t be making new ornaments at this workshop, but we do

hope to refurbish some of the ornaments that were made many

years ago and s"ll adorn our tree during the Christmas season.

If you can pin, glue, or s"tch, you have the skill to repair

our Chrismons. You don’t have to be a woman or a member of

LUMW to help us. All are welcome! Several of the repairs can be

done at home so call Meredith Houff at 743-4804 should you be

willing to help but can’t aend the workshop.

New Group! We are having a "soft-opening" for our First Fridays "HOLY GROUNDS" which is a coffee house. The first one will be held, Friday, October 6 from 7-9 pm in the church Auditorium. Come have a warm beverage, dessert and listen to our featured poet, Walton Gordon. Anyone else who would like to share a poem is welcome to do so.

Faith On Tap! On the last Thursday of each month at 6:30pm we meet at the Hawksbill Brewery to fellowship and discuss religion. Topics vary.

Everyone is welcome!

Nursery Worker Needed: Kimberly Campbell will be leaving the church at the end of the year. We have been blessed with her nurturing, caring presence in the Nursery for 10 years. We wish her the best & will miss her dearly. As of January 1st we will need a new person to run our nursery. This is a paid position. Please contact the church office if you, or someone you know would be interested in this position. We are open-

ing this position up within the church before advertising it publically.

Winter is coming, do you or someone you know need a

wood burning fireplace insert? Call Sharon SurraJ for de-

tails, 860-9789.
