GARY and CARLEEN MAHAN Gary and his wife Carleen Mahan joined the Counts in 2014,and have been car and motorcycle people most of their married lives. Gary wanted to finish a long timeproject, a1949 Baby Lincoln 2 door sedan that needed parts that took up to 8 years to find.. The body ismounted on a mid 70’s Lincoln chassis, complete with the Lincoln 460 CI motor and drive train. The caris painted a satin Charcoal color and the interior was done by Carleen in a light gray tuck and roll mate-

rial. That is Carleen’s business so if you need an interior or furniture uphol-stered give her a call. Gary and Carleen sold a motorcycle that they had andpurchased a really nice first gen Mustang 2 door coupe with a black paintjob and shadow flames. Now they both have a car to take to cruises andshows.

Gary’s ‘49 Lincoln was the victim of a another car backing into it at a out-door car show which broke the pot metal grille. Now the insurance company (Hagerty} is doing

what Gary did the first time around, spendingcountless hours trying to find a replacement.Good luck Gary. Gary just had surgery to correctsome serious back problems so, hang in thereGary, there’s always a light at the end of the tun-nel!

Ann and I tried to make as many outdoor shows as possible and more coverage is in this issue. I hope you made abunch too and if you took any pictures send them to me and a short recap of the event and where it was and I’llinclude it in the Streetin’ News!

One such story is the fantastic ‘Road Trip’, club member, Don Oskey made during mid July thru mid Septemberof this year. Check out the story and photos in this issue!

There were a couple of small cruise in car shows at the Box Elder Dairy Queen inAugust and September. Not big Counts turnouts but we did make a showing.

Here is a tidbit we received from former Counts member, Dave Hill. It is a ticket

stub from the Counts Rod and CustomExhibition that was held at the CityAuditorium that was located at 7th. St and Quincy St. from 1962 until1970. At that time the City Auditorium was torn down and replacedwith the Dahl Fine Arts Center. Those Counts Car Shows were a

blast and it was sad to see that building destroyed as it was a lotcheaper to put a show on back in the ‘60’s. The Rushmore PlazaCivic Center was finished in 1977 just in time to feature Elvis Presley

in one of his last concerts.

Another note of interest is that Rodders Journal did a story on line about the Counts with several photos I sentthem that I had taken of some of the original Counts members back in the early 1960’s. I thought they did a greatjob and there will be another photo in the next issue of Rodders Journal out in a month or so if not already. Rod-ders Journal is a quarterly full color magazine that sells for around $12.95 at quality book stores like BAM or$49.00 for a yearly subscription.

The holiday season is fast approaching and the Counts have had the Awards Banquet already and soon to be fol-lowed by the Christmas Party and Dinner. The Parade of Lights , just after Thanksgiving was a lot of fun with agreat participation of club members. Many thanks go out to Bob Mallow for setting up the Story Book IslandChristmas Lights tour that we help with one night each year. It’s amazing how many people bring their familiesout to enjoy the HUGE DISPLAY of LIGHTS throughout the park.

I had the good fortune of talking on the phone with an old club member from the late 50’s and early 60’s, JackSlawik. Jack lives in Oregon and has built top fuel Funny Cars for several fam

ous drag bracers. He is now restoring Ford Model T’s and A’s. The story that

Rodders Journal did online had a picture of Jack’s 1932 Ford sedan in pink

primer and gold metalflake wheels and in a Counts Car Show at Baken Park

in 1960. He said it brought tears to his eyes. He sold the Deuce years ago!

Keep in touch, Jack! It’s always great remembering the “Good Ole Days”, JN

The Neuzils decided to make the trekdown to Torrington, WY. On August28th and renew some old acquaint-ances that we hadn’t seen in quite afew years. Back in the late 70’s theCounts made the Scottsbluff run a reg-ular event. It moved to Torrington andbecame the Cow Chip Nationals inthe 80’s and later was joined by theCars in the Park held in Morril, NE.

Now they have combined all 3 eventsinto the current event and have mem-bers of all the clubs help put it on. Imet JL from Scottsbluff and we talkedover some of the past events andwhere some of the OLD members arenow and what they are doing. It ap-pears health is taking it’s toll on someof their members just like the Countsmembers.

This show had 70 entries and therewas a poker run after a burger andhot dog feed. This was followed bygames including the famous CowChip Throw. Lots of fun! Then it wasawards time at 4 pm. It was nice tosee some new cars as well as oldfriends! JN

The Dakotas Chapter SDC 2015 Labor Day Weekend Studebaker Event is now history. We had entriesfrom 8 states and Canada along with 910 people that voted on Sunday for their favorite cars. There aremany tourists still in the Black Hills and that they choose to attend the Studebaker car show. The DakotasChapter Studebaker Drivers Club want to thank you all for making this such a fun event. Mary Coffin, our goto gal, did some checking into the almost 1000 spectator voting ballots and found that they were from 27states and 7 foreign countries. Unbelievable We hope all that took part in the tour as well as the meals en-joyed them and your response to our questionnaire will help us plan for next years event. Just send them into the address on the form, it will be appreciated.

It was so good to see so many of our old friends as well as the new people that came to check us out. Wedid pick up 7 new members from different parts of the country, welcome aboard and keep in touch by e-mailor a letter. and let us know what is happening in you part of the country. Milestone Reached At 33rd Annual Swap Meet & Car Corral In Rapid City South Dakota. By Peggy and Bill NapoliThe 1 Big Day Event! The 33rd Annual Super Swap Meet and Car Corral is in the history books for 2015. That's right, 33 years, rain,

snow, wind, or whatever. This is the largest Swap Meet, and Car Corral in the region. For the first time, every single available space inthe concourse area of the Central States Fairgrounds was sold out. Vendors filled the area from one end to the other, to sell their car, pickup, truck, race car, boat, motorcycle parts, memorabilia, toys, or anything that was related to the automotive industry.

In the Car Corral there was the largest assembly of vehicles being sold by private individuals ever. The promoters, Bill and Peggy Na-poli even went down Saturday evening to lay out more vendor spaces, because of all the calls frominterested people who missed the preregistration deadline on Saturday.

Sunday morning September 13th started out very cool at 4 am as the vendors from across the country started arriving to get their goodsset up in their 15 by 25 f oot vendor spots. These are some of largest vendor spots you will find at any swap meet. The preregistered ven-dors arrived early, and were quickly checked in by the experienced crew who are the mainstay of this swap meet. There is even a crew tohelp the vendors unload their goods so they can get set up quicker, if they need help. There was all kind of custom wheels, tires , speedparts, 4 speeds, antique parts, signs, vintage toys, etc. One guy really stood out. His booth was filled with antique race parts, includingFlathead, early Corvette. Oldsmobile fuel injections, plus many others. Ardun Heads, Hemi stuff, and much more. No doubt he was thestar vendor for old race car guys.

Vendors from Arizona, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and allacross South Dakota made this absolutely the biggest and best ever Swap Meet and Car Corral. This Swap meet is filled by 99 percentprivate individuals who clean out the shed, garage, and basement of their excess automotive, motorcycle and memorabilia items and bringthem to this swap meet to sell, or trade. Generally most of the vendors end up taking home more than they brought, because of all theneat items others bring, that they just have to have. One of the best things about this Swap Meet is, when the gates openat 10am, Admission is FREE! This was the 13th year that the vendor space prices have not been raised, and no admission fee to the pub-lic when the gates open at10am. Peggy came up with a special (For Vendors Only) 30th AnniversarySwap Meet license plate that was given to the vendors. The license plates were coveted by all who received their 30th Anniversary sou-venir. Peggy is working on something really special for the 35th Anniversary Swap Meet, that only the vendors will receive for celebratingwith us at the 35th Annual Event in 2017. The 2016 34th Annual Super Swap Meet and Car Corral Date is set: Sunday September 11th,2016. You can contact Bill or Peggy at Motion Unlimited Museum in Rapid City,605-348-7373 for more information.
