Welcome to the 21st edition of the Craic in Galway magazine. To celebrate our coming of age, we have been given the key to nationwide distribution as the team at Citylink have taken The Craic on board! Anyone travelling to and from the city will be able to catch up on all of the latest happenings, daily events diary, news, views, health, fashion and features. We may not have found the spaceship from our last edition, but we may as well be on the Enterprise itself, we are so excited! This partnership will help to spread the word about your business around the country from the comfort of the Citylink services. In other craicing news, former Ireland rugby coach Eddie O’Sullivan has had his hair cut, two of the Craic Squad are gearing up to fight it out in a charity white collar boxing match, and Tiny Iron is making a welcome return to the city for some more wrestling magic. We have the low down on the freebies at the Galway Food Festival, and help you to save even more money with our charity shop style. We have some egg-stra Easter fashion for you (see what we did there - clever bunnies!) and Dara Kelly helps us survive the chocolate mad weekend without breaking your diet. As always, our roving photographers have been out and about, so see who you can spot amongst the pages of our

colourful and vibrant magazine.

Happy Reading, Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

The old railway line situated along the Corrib between NUIG and Moycullen could be given a new lease of life - as funding of €2 million has been secured for the greenway project. If it goes ahead, pending the participa-tion of landowners and gaining planning permission etc, then the disused section of the Gal-way-Clifden railway line will be transformed into a trail suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. It is the next step in the process.

Galway hosts European DJ Festival

Skratch That! 2014!!!By Avril HORAN

in GA

LWAY 6

Dj’s from across Europe are coming to Galway for the Easter weekend for the Community Skratch Games, 2014

at the Bierhaus. The free festival was established in the city eight years ago - the first of its kind set up around co-operation rather than competition in the world!

The event was set up to raise awareness of Dj hip hop culture at a time when competitive based events were coming to an end in Ireland. Organisers saw a new opportunity to bring what they love to a wider audience, without the pressure of competition, and it has grown from strength to strength.

Among this year’s line-up are world freestyle and UK scratch champion Chile, who will join Enron and Jimmy Hatetank for a walk on the scratchier side on Saturday, April 19th. Sunday, April 20th, is set aside for the producer’s showcase.

There will be a ‘bridge of the Starship Enterprise’ vibe, as lots of machines with flashing lights take over the Bierhaus stage. Classically trained guitarist, Daniel Jacobson, will don his production alias ZoiD, Lewis James will showcase his hyperfunk and Dave Hayden will perform live for the first time. It’s set to be another vintage year for the Skratch set.

Construction on the new, long awaited, Ballinfoile Community Centre is set to start in May after formal contracts were signed by Galway City Council with Purcell Construction - witnessed by City

Mayor, Padraig Conneely. It is expected to take one year to build and fit out and will be “delivered to the highest quality and on time,” according to City Manager, Brendan McGrath.

Happy Birthday Valair!!!

Former Ireland Rugby coach, Eddie O’Sullivan, had the advantage when he found himself in the

line out for a hair cut at Valair hairdressing on Market Street. It was a scrum to get to his tresses, as he was tackled by the expert hands of the team at Valair. Eddie was on side to help the salon celebrate their first year in business at their city centre location.

Owner Valerie Cooke was “delighted” when Eddie took the time out from his busy schedule to pop in to the salon as she is “a big rugby fan”. The Galway girl from Monivea has been involved in hairdressing since she was 15-years-old and always had a passion for styling and style.

“Rugby is very big in Galway and where I come from!” she says, “and I really appreciate Eddie popping in to get his hair cut and help us to celebrate our first year on Market Street. He has a really busy schedule, so it was great that he could make it and

have his hair cut here. He was awful nice.”

Valair’s official birthday is on April 26th and a signed jersey by the man himself will be given away to one lucky winner. The past year has “been really good” explains Valerie, and they have built up loyal customers “which we value very much”.

“I have a great team and I couldn’t be happier,” she says, “we have already expanded with our colour suite upstairs and I hope to expand again over the next six months.”

The colour suite is the perfect location for private parties and hens who want to hit the town looking their very best. The city centre location is ideal, and all of the staff are highly qualified colour technicians, who keep up-to-date with the latest hairdressing techniques. Valerie steers the salon with her 19 years of experience, which includes a place on the Irish Hairdressing Team in 2005.

“I have always wanted to be a hairdresser,” she says, “and it was my dream to start my own salon. I am delighted with the premises on Market Street, as we are right in the heart of Galway city.”

There is fantastic value at Valair as their blow dry bar offers any kind of blow dry for just €15 all week, Monday to Saturday. And they have specialised blow dry options for those who need an extra boost or want to tame those tresses. For just €35, you can chose the Exfo blow dry, which exfoliates the scalp and is particularly effective for anyone with dandruff or dry scalp concerns – or the Sparkle blow dry, which will inject pure shine into the hair, lasting 6-8 weeks.

And for €50, you can treat

yourself to the fantastic Botox blow dry. This is particularly effective for those who want to calm curly or frizzy hair for a sleeker style. The Wella salon also stocks products by Redkin and Sebastian.

Valair Hairdressing is open every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am-6pm; Thursday from 9am-8pm; Friday from 8am-8pm; and Saturday

Twenty future boxing champions commenced training this week at the Black Dragon Kickboxing

Club for the White Collar Boxing programme to raise funds for Galway Hospice. The 17 men and 3 women will train for 8 weeks under Pete Foley and his excellent team in the Black Dragon’s state of the art gym before stepping into the ring on Fight Night in the Menlo Park Hotel on Friday, 6th June. They will work on boxing fitness and technique on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional sparring practice on Saturdays.

Your Craic squad is represented by

fitness instructor Dara Kelly and photographer Darius Ivan, who were pushed to their limits this week while getting to grips with punching, skipping, situps, jabs, hooks and fancy footwork. It’s too early yet to place your bets… Dara is already showing a competitive streak and Darius says his energy has skyrocketed as a result of the training. We’ll keep you informed over the next 8 weeks. Judging by the dedication of all 20 participants in Week One, we’re in for a hell of a show on Fight Night! To make a donation to Galway Hospice, contact Dara, Darius or any of the Strike a Blow participants via The Craic in Galway Facebook page.

Oh my Gawd! My Granny used to know those guys. She used to tell us all about them, the crazy old bat. The tall one used to date my cousin. Now you’re just lucky I know what you’re talking about but no one is gonna believe you. In fact,

those scary guys in the big white suits are going to come to your house like in ET. Aliens actually know how to make a bicycle fly so you would be screwed! I think you should just keep your butt probing days to yourself!

Ok, it is not for me to say if any of the things you have experienced are genuine proof of life outside our planet, but please be aware that if you are taking hallucinogenic drugs, this could be the source of what you think happened. However if during this time you had not

consumed excess alcohol or drugs, please consult a medical doctor first for examination, and chat to a psychologist about your experience. If it happens again, I suggest you get photographic proof of the incident and present your findings to the relevant agency.

Ireland’s first international television channel, IrishTV, launches on May 1, creating 150 new jobs in Ireland, the UK

and USA. Founded by Mayo entrepreneurs Pierce O’Reilly and Mairead Ní Mhaoilchiaráin, the €15 million project will focus on bringing rural Ireland to a global audience. The Chairman is Mayo born multi-millionaire, John Griffin, who recently sold the UK’s largest minicab service, Addison Lee, for €360 million.

“We think locally but broadcast globally,” explains CEO Pierce O’Reilly.

“Securing the deals, both with Sky in the UK and Europe, and PBS in the US, has enabled us to potentially capture a large portion of the Irish diaspora.”

IrishTV will broadcast across the UK, Ireland and Europe on Sky Channel 191, on Freesat and in the US on PBS. It will also be online on IrishTV.com.

“Three people will be employed in each county in production, presentation and commercial positions on the County Matters shows, while an initial 34 staff will be based at IrishTV headquarters in Westport, with a further five in our northern office in Donaghmore, Tyrone,” Pierce continues. “Internationally, ten people will be employed in Manchester, Liverpool and London and an initial five in Irish TV’s US base in Cleveland Ohio.

“Irish rural life is unique, with its own cultures, traditions and events. At the heart of these events are people, and wherever people gather, we’ll be there,” he says.

A Galway Gal’s Experience on Graham Norton

Michelle in the hot seat

In The Red ChairBy Avril HORAN

It’s not often you meet someone who has been in the famous red chair on the Graham Norton show. For those of you

who don’t know what it’s all about, a willing victim submits to telling a story about their lives on screen by sitting in a large red armchair, and can be dumped out at will by the quick witted talk show host, or one of his celebrity guests.

It takes nerves of steel, and a funny tale, to make it through without being unceremoniously thrown backwards - having barely finished a few sentences. And yet, recently I met Galway girl Michelle Curley, who did just that, by appearing on the show in 2011 and telling her ‘red chair’ tale. Did our gal make it to the end? Nope, she was tipped out by the hand of Sir Cliff Richard and “has not been a fan of him ever since!”

Michelle was working in London at the time and applied for tickets to the recording at the ITV studios. Guests on the night included Sir Alan Sugar, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, UK

comedian Mickey Flanagan alongside crooner Cliff.

“Once I had my tickets, I was asked by email if I wanted to participate in the red chair,” she explains.

“I’ve had a few mishaps in my short life so I said ‘what the heck’ I might as well do it for the craic! It was very nerve wracking, as you couldn’t actually see Graham or any of the guests. I was talking straight into the camera, so I had no idea when the lever was going to be pulled. As it was being recorded on a weekday, I just went straight from work, so I had no time to fuss over an outfit or anything. You don’t get any special preference for going into the red chair – so I didn’t get to meet any of the guests! I had just moved from Galway to London at the time, but am back in the city now,” she says.

Michelle hasn’t been put off by her ‘red chair’ experiences. Sadly, Cliff Richard lost a fan in the taping of the series, but our Michelle has been left with a new tale to tell!

She’s on her way to stardom, after 18-year-old Clodagh Lawlor from Newmarket On Fergus, Co Clare, scooped the Coyote Factor title after a tough competition. She is also through to the second round of the X Factor and is in with a chance

of appearing on the TV talent show. We spend 5 minutes with the talented singer.

What’s your style of music:

Pop/ country I think! I can never pick because I love all kinds of music.

How do you feel about the X Factor?

I’m excited! I was so shocked when they told me that I was going to be auditioning for the show. I’m singing either London Grammar’s song ‘strong’ or ‘broken hearted’ by Karmin. X factor is an opportunity for me. I was once told to use any opportunity that comes my way; if they work, then great; if they don’t, I won’t lose anything - because the only thing I wanted was what the opportunity could have given me. I’ve nothing to lose, but a lot to win.

What was the experience like?

Well I haven’t gotten through exactly yet. There were thousands there, I’d say about 4,000 people. 500 were picked from that for Sunday’s auditions, and then 150 were let through for the Monday auditions in front of the executive producers. Now only 50 are going to be picked from the 150. I hope I make it! If it’s for me it won’t pass, and that’s all I

keep telling myself. I won’t know for six weeks. It’s going to be a long six weeks!

What is your ambition for the future?

I’d love for my career to be in music. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. I’m going to try really hard to make it happen. I busk on Shop Street and I don’t have a job because I really can’t see myself doing anything else. Also I’m repeating my Leaving Cert and to be quite honest - I hate it! I don’t want to do anything else but music, so I’m gonna give it a heck of a go, and see where it leads me to :)

Favourite food?

Italian. Yummmmmmmy!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you bring?

Food,water and a pillow!

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I’d love to be like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as she can zap her fingers to do all sorts of magic.

I love to shop in River Island, Oasis, New Look, PIA Galway, Born and Brown Thomas to name but a few. This is the outfit I wore to a recent event I organised as part of the ‘Into The West Blogger Network’ held at the G Hotel. Head to toe in River Island, this wrap front jumpsuit is such a versatile piece for work and play. It’s a modern alter-native to formal separates. I love the rolled sleeves and metal detail belt. These chic pumps are the cornerstone of a successful wardrobe this season and they have become my go-to shoes. I love the patent finish and the amazing stiletto heel.

DÉAN CINNEADH gan d’aiste bia a bhriseadh. Ná tabhair rogha duit féin.

RÉITIGH bianna atá “ceadaithe” duit chomh maith le bianna speisialta.

DÍRIGH ISTEACH ar gach duine eile a shásamh – bí i do bhean/fear tí iontach.

NÁ BAC le brú ó dhaoine eile. Tusa atá i gceannas ort féin.

BÍODH do rogha féin réidh agat fad a bheidh gach duine eile ag ithe seacláide.

Déan mousse seacláide as púdar cócó (gan siúcra dar ndóigh) measctha le iógart nádúrtha

Déan pancóga nó creathán as púdar próitéine fanaile le sú craobh, cainéal, caife nó cócó mar bhlastán (seol ríomhphost chugam: [email protected] chun oidis a fháil).

Smaoinigh ar do sprioc fhadtéarmach – an bhfuil tú sásta í a chaitheamh san aer? Cá mhéad uair ar ith tú uibheacha Cásca? Cá mhéad uair ar bhain tú an sprioc sin amach? Go díreach. Coinnigh ort.

DECIDE not to break your diet. Don’t give yourself the option.
