Welcome to the 35th edition of the Craic in Galway magazine. Well, how

was your Comedy Carnival? A group of us gals went along to see Tommy

Tiernan, the Dirty Circus, the Lads of Comedy and Singlehood, and that

wasn’t even the tip of the comedy iceberg. And we had an opportunity

to see Des Bishop in conversation with Jarlath Regan in our one freebie of

the week - as they recorded for his award winning podcast - An Irishman

Abroad. Yes our hearts are lighter with all of the banter and our wallets

too. While many are well versed with Des’ antics, it was a heartwarming

interview that had us pondering the meaning of ‘expectation’ for many

days afterwards. Jarlath only broke the surface of the life and times of the

young comedian before the live interview came to an end. Singlehood

at the Town Hall Theatre was another highlight, a more gentle comedy

experience, compared to the rough and tumble of the stand-ups tongue!

Macnas brought their gentle giants to life with the ‘Symphony of the

Restless’ and it was an amazing experience. Thousands watched as music,

performance and theatrics wound its way through the medieval streets

of the city, as darkness fell. And we have it here in the vibrant pages of

our craicing magazine. Join us for your daily two-week diary, lots of good

news, social events and out and about pics to warm the cockles of your

hearts. There’s lots to look forward to with drama festivals, a monster dash,

restaurant week, visual arts entertainment - the craic just keeps on rolling.

Happy Reading,

Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

Cr a i c i n g congratulations to the 31 members of the Hughes family who ran the Dublin

City Marathon in aid of Galway charity, On The Road Again. The family, who have strong Galway connections, not only smashed the Guinness World Record but also raised almost €47,000 for the charity.

On The Road Again works closely with homeless and mental health agencies by engaging them in walking and running as a means to build confidence, strength and self esteem. It was set up by Paul Fallon from Annaghdown in 2011, and he has been “blown away” by the support from the Hughes family. Their success has gone a long way to promote the On The Road Again charity, which he established in order to share the positive benefits of running.

“They got in touch with me back in March, as one of their cousins had heard about us and they identified completely with our aim,” explains

Paul.

“I held a conference call with other family members, in New York and Boston, to explain what we are about and it went from there. It was their first time to raise money for the charity and it has been phenomenal. When I first set up the charity, I was warned that it can take a minimum of 5-7 years to become established. Not only have they helped to fundraise, but also to create brand name awareness and really get our name out there.”

Many of the family members are based in Galway, one is the owner of Portwest while another has Richard Hughes opticians in Woodquay and Knocknacarra. The rest travelled from across Ireland, the UK, US, Spain and Germany to follow in the footsteps of their relatives. Thirty years ago, the eight male children of the Hughes family, who are originally from Westport, Co Mayo, set the Guinness World Record for the most siblings to complete the Dublin marathon - and three of them took part in this new challenge.

Wow! A blood sucker! I think we used to have one of you in the family. I haven’t seen him in a long time, I don’t know where he went to. He used to spend a lot of time in doors away from everyone else, cus’ he didn’t tan well, poor guy. Maybe he sailed across the sea in a blood vessel. Anyway, I don’t think you should take revenge on the world just cus’ you don’t like the stupid shows nowadays. Don’t worry they will get bored and switch to werewolf shows any time now and

then run their way through a whole load of ghost shows and whatever other creatures they can think of until they come back to vampires again. Just don’t watch them and don’t take what they say to heart, that is, if you can take anything to your heart, I don’t know how that works with you. If you get over your hatred for people imitating your kind, maybe you would like to hang out sometime. My friends would think you’re so cool!

Well, if there is even a tiny possibility you’re a real vampire I would have to actually agree with Candy. I can’t believe I said that but, yes, you should definitely not take your anger out on the world. Maybe get another hobby other than watching shows you

dislike or reading celebrity gossip or whatever the source of your irritation is. Maybe play some board games this Halloween or bob for apples…I bet you would be great at that, with the teeth and all.

Have a fangtastic Halloween!

I’m a vampire. I know it’s hard to believe but I may as well just say it. Halloween is usually my favourite time of year. I can just be myself and no one takes any notice because they see my fangs and assume I am in costume. I just feel so angry this year and can’t enjoy it. I feel like all everyone thinks about when it comes to vampires is these sparkly, pretty boy ‘Edward Cullens’. But let me tell you we don’t sparkle! Do you know his abs were painted on? I don’t like the way we are being portrayed. It’s laughable! Yes, a lot of it is true, like the super strength; we each have special talents but unlike the movies, I don’t plan on falling in love with a

girl who only has one facial expression for every emotion! We have kept ourselves secret all these years and only kill what we need to survive but we are all becoming increasingly frustrated with these TV shows and movies. The old movies were good, probably because it was a vampire who created them, but now it’s just embarrassing. We are considering taking action on the world. Do you see any other option? I thought maybe you might be the best one to contact considering you get such strange letters.

Yours sincerely, Count Conan O’Brien

It’s hard to think of a more hectic time in the world of video games than November. Each year the eleventh month sees a huge influx of

big brand games, all trying to grab your attention before the Christmas season takes over. Of course, this year is no different as gaming’s heavy hitters line the store shelves.

Call of Duty will kick things off by launching its latest game, Advanced Warfare. This one is set to take the series away from its usual feeling of military realism and replace it with more of a comic style look. Each Call of Duty game attempts something new to keep the franchise fresh, and this year it’s doing so by featuring futuristic robots, super suits and well known Hollywood star; Kevin Spacey. Galway’s video game distributors always see a long line of Call of Duty fans queuing up in anticipation at the midnight releases. For many, this has become an annual get together.

One game that saw bigger crowds

than any other in Galway City was last year’s release of Grand Theft Auto V. This all but brought the city to a standstill. Huge crowds lined up outside various shops on Headford Road to purchase copies of the game. One shop in Eyre Square shopping centre even saw a steady queue of gamers reaching back beyond the shop’s shutters for the day. It seemed like it was never ending. The game sold so well that it has become the biggest selling piece of entertainment media in history. This year, Grand Theft Auto V will be re-released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and will undoubtedly warrant another massive crowd flocking to Galway’s stores to secure their copies of this new and improved version of the game.

November may seem like a very hectic and almost stressful month, but it gives local businesses a boost and gives Galway’s video game fans a fantastic selection of games that will last them until this time next year.

Budget filmmaking is the new trend at the moment, especially in Galway. Hard Knocks Hostel is a new 5-part comedy web series produced by Aaron Woods and filmed on Inishmore. Set in a badly run hostel, the series follows the lives of two receptionists and is due to be completed at the end of November on a budget of just €1,000, thanks to funding through the FundIt website. In order to cope with the monotony of the jobs, and the people they seem to meet again and again, they get creative in their dealings with guests. Their eccentric boss has an unusual attitude - the customer is not always right - and the girls embrace the philosophy, often leading to disastrous results. We sit down with Aaron and creator Karen Murphy to find out about film making on a budget.

So how did you come up with the idea?

Karen – I’ve been working in a hostel for over 3 years. I was doing a Masters in film direction in NUIG and was trying to write what I know. In a hostel, you get so

many crazy characters, it was like a perfect formula. I had this wealth of characters and that’s how it really came about.

What’s it all about?

It’s set in the middle of nowhere and the two receptionists that run the place are disillusioned by the job. They have grown weary of the whole customer service thing. It’s set in such a rural place they get away with having the craic and pressing their buttons.

With the budget restraints do you find you become more creative?

Yes definitely to quote Orson Wells he said ‘absence of limitations is the enemy of art’. That’s definitely something we are living by at the moment. I always seem to meet artists and musicians, I just do - and they are the people that are coming on board now. Everyone is coming with a common interest to start on a platform to get some exposure.

Aaron – The key is you don’t need big budgets for this to work. As a filmmaker, I know how tough it is to realise your ambition. With Galway’s amazing

low-budget film community, creating a film or short or web series doesn’t need to cost a fortune.

Where are you filming it?

Inishmore. There will be a group of us in a hostel, so it’s going to be very intense. The actors don’t get paid; they want stuff for their show reel. It’s like a mutually beneficial experience.

What filmmakers inspire your work?

That’s a tough one. This is my first comedy that I’ve done. Its kind of new ground for me.

How much work goes into a production like this?

Every spare moment goes into this because I love it. I genuinely love it. It doesn’t feel like work.

How is the Little Cinema helping young filmmakers in Galway?

It is one of the only platforms that we have. Anyone can go out with their cameras and you can shoot whatever you want. They are very encouraging. They see it as a learning curve.

What are your plans for 2015?

We are moving to Canada and there is a possibility of having season two in Canada.

For anyone out there interested in seeing the series where can they find it?

Like us on our facebook page Hard Knocks Hostel. It will be ready to view at the end of November.

Our website will also go live then too.

The brooding character of Connemara collides with the lively, social character of Galway city at this year’s Tulca

Festival of Visual Arts, taking place from November 8th-23rd at the festival gallery on Market Street, Galway Arts Centre, 126 artists run gallery and various locations across the city centre.

Entitled ‘Neutral’, the festival features works by over 30 Irish and international artists. Over 550 proposals were submitted from 10 countries in a host of mediums including film and video, sculpture, painting and installation.

Curated by Aisling Prior, the festival aims “to draw attention to the lure of stillness and of silence in this increasingly digital age where all of us, even those who chose to live in the most remote parts of a country, are known, traceable and expected to be readily reachable. Escape is impossible”.

“Each year Tulca Festival of Visual Art aims to engage with the people of Galway and the cultural landscape in both county and city,” says Producer Kate Howard.

“We are lucky that Galway has a

wealth of artists and arts audience that support the festival each November. The festival has now grown to be a highlight on Ireland’s cultural calendar, and has exhibited work from artists from Canada to Carraroe and from South Korea to the Spanish Arch since its beginnings in 2002.”

During this year’s festival, exhibitions will take place in both gallery and non-gallery spaces, featuring projects and events across urban and regional contexts. This year the main gallery space will be located in the former Connacht Tribune Printing Works in Market Street. For more see

For The Craic!

Faoi dheireadh - deis agam leas a bhaint as

na céadta clár teilifíse atá feicthe agam ina

mbíonn iar-shaighdiúr i mbun eachtraíochta

in áit fhiáin. Níor ghá dom foscadán a thógáil

as craobhóga, ná m’fhual féin a ól, ach léim mé

isteach in uisce fuar seascainn agus chaith mé

mé féin faoi eangacha, thar chlaíocha agus síos

tulláin dhorcha ar nós Bear Grylls féin. Tharraing

mé na cosa trí láib dhomhan a rinne iarracht

na bróga a bhaint díom, chrom mé le dul trí

ghréasáin téada agus rith mé isteach is amach

trí lúbra crann ard. Rith mé tríd an fhoraois go

beo, gan smaoineamh ar na gasúir dhá bhliain

déag d’aois a bhí ag mótaráil tharam, is mé

ag déanamh mo bhealaí suas cnoc amháin

eile i dtreo na líne críche. D’ardaigh mé na

lámha le teann bróid - bhí sé déanta agam:

Cúrsa Bacainní Láibe 5K na Mucky Runners,

i bPáirc Foraoise Phort Omna. An lá céanna

ar thug na mílte faoi shráideanna Bhaile Átha

Cliath chun maratón a rith, chuaigh na céadta

Gaillimheach isteach sa phuiteach sa bhforaois

álainn, ag tabhairt faoi bhacainní de chuile

chineál thar chúrsa 5K, eagraithe ag cumann

sacair Phort Omna. Craic iontach a bhí ann

cinnte, ach tá ceachtanna don saol le foghlaim

freisin, is tú i mbun dúshláin mar é. Ar dtús, lean

na comharthaí agus cloígh leis an gcosán. Pé

rud atá amach romhat, bhí duine éigin ann

romhat. Lean a lorg. Bí cróga. Tabhair faoi go

fuinniúil agus bíodh a fhios agat go mbeidh

tú ceart go leor. Tá daoine thart le cabhrú leat,

ach cabhair a iarraidh. Coinnigh ort. Tá daoine

do leanúint freisin, mar sin tabhair misneach

dóibh. Tarraing anáil. Ná héirigh as go deo.

Titfidh tú, beidh cuma an amadáin ort seans,

nó gortófar tú fiú. Ach tiocfaidh tú tríd. Éireoidh

leat ar deireadh agus beidh tú chomh sásta

gur thug tú faoi.

I knew all those Bear Grylls documentaries would

come in handy one day. Although I didn’t need to

build a shelter out of twigs or drink my own urine,

I leapt fearlessly into waist-deep, freezing swamp

water and flung myself under nets, over logs

and into pitch-black tunnels with all the urgency

of a former army reservist. I squelched through

shoe-sucking mud and bounded over countless

tree stumps, piled-up branches and muddy

walls. I ducked and dived through spiderwebs

of twine and zigzagged through tall trees. I

pounded relentlessly down uneven forest paths,

fearlessly ignoring the twelve-year olds rushing

past me as I scrambled up the final hill towards

the finish line. I punched the air in victory - I had

completed the Mucky Runners 5K Fun Obstacle

Course in Portumna Forest Park. On the same

day as the Dublin City Marathon runners tested

themselves for up to 3 hours on the roads of the

capital, Galwegians of all ages embraced their

inner bogman and mucked themselves up over

5K of strategically placed obstacles in the beautiful

forest, courtesy of Portumna FC. Apart from being

seriously good craic, there are life lessons to be

learned from taking part in such a challenge. First,

follow the signs and stick to the path. No matter

what lies ahead, someone has done it before you.

Follow their footsteps. Be fearless. Jump right in

and trust that you will be OK. There are people

around you to help, if you just stretch out your

hand. Keep moving forward. People are following

your lead too, so warn them of the pitfalls while

showing them how to overcome them. Breathe.

Push yourself. Never give up. You’ll fall, look stupid,

maybe even hurt yourself, but you’ll make it.

When you cross that finish line, you’ll be so glad

you tried.
