Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ,

Nancy and I have enjoyed this Summer. Mowing the yard, walking around town, sitting on the deck, driving

hither and yon, have been more enjoyable with cooler temperatures. It is tempting to sit back, relax, and ignore the

problems of the world.

Four people have been shot to death in Peoria in the last week! Families are grieving in Chattanooga,

Charleston, Colorado…folks are trying to move forward in Delavan, Cameron, Coal City, Watseka…the list keeps

growing! How can I make a difference?

Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit

of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he

called her and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” And he laid his hands upon her, and

immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus

had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those

days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of

you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman,

a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” Luke

13:10-16

Followers of Jesus have been set free for a life of freedom and faithfulness in Christ Jesus! We are called to a

life of celebration and service every day! Jesus healed a woman bound for eighteen years. How can I be indifferent

just because something does not happen immediately today? Following Jesus and living faithfully connected to His

Church reminds me, I cannot remain indifferent! I must confess it, repent in the power of God’s Holy Spirit and

press on in ministry!

“An atheist offered an interesting perspective on this matter. Penn Jillette of the magician duo Penn and

Teller said, ‘I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. How much do you have to hate somebody to not

proselytize?...I mean if I believed, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that a truck was coming at you, and you didn’t

believe that truck was bearing down on you, there is a certain point where I tackle you…’” (We Confess)

Celebrate and enjoy each day! The Good News of God in Jesus Christ is we have been set free. God’s Holy

Spirit empowers us to be faithful, confess our indifference and choose to live each day in the fellowship of his

Church; seeking to lead people to real, personal, saving relationships with Jesus and to show the love of God to

everyone! We are not finished, eighteen years, more or less; God’s holy purpose for us is to be Jesus’ Church and

offer the world Christ!

Seasons of the Christian Year –Pentecost

Pentecost comes from the Greek, “pentekoste,” meaning fifty; fifty days after Easter. The Jewish festival of Pentecost was celebrated seven weeks after Passo-ver. The festival celebrated the giving of the Law, found-ing of Israel, and the Feast of First Fruits, a harvest festi-val. Christian Pentecost celebrates the gift of the Holy

Spirit to believers and the gifts brought by the Spirit to empower ministry. Red is the color of Pentecost. The Spirit came in tongues as of fire, so red con-veys this image. God is the “consuming fire” represented in Scripture. Fire brings warmth. The Holy Spirit brought warm hearts, fiery zeal, dedication, and devotion. Oxygenated blood is red and Spirit- empowered martyrs shed life-blood abroad for the growth of the Church. Green is also used for Sundays after Pentecost as a symbol of growth. Christians must grow in the Spirit to stay alive in Jesus Christ. The dove is a symbol of Pente-cost since the Spirit descended as a dove on Jesus at his Baptism. We use this im-age to convey the Holy Spirit coming to us. Pentecost is a season to express:

Celebration: Jesus fulfills the promise to send his Holy Spirit. Pentecost is called the birthday of the Church and this is a time to celebrate.

Gratitude: we have received the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit, so we give thanks. The Spirit brings life; calls, enlightens, and draws believers into the Church. We are grateful for the Church, the mother of our faith.

Hope: all things are made new by the Spirit. Revival and renewal are results of Pentecost.

Fall Church Clean Up The Trustees are developing a new process for

the Fall Clean Up at Church. Rather than pick-

ing 1 day, a list of projects will be compiled that

need to be completed and individual church

members will be contacted to be responsible for

completing the job sometime during the month

of September. They can involve as many other

church members they would like, on a time

frame that works for them. Be looking for a

phone call!
