The da Vinci Daily The Black Death Issue

Interview with Leonardo da Vinci himself

Rats, Furry Messengers of Death

Today’s issue of GBE Magazine will be dedicated to the one year

anniversary of the death of the last recorded person with the plague.

Most can remember how badly the plague affected them, whether it was

their families dying slowly one by one or watching bodies being burned in

piles. For 4 years people suffered without knowing what happened but

now doctors have discovered the culprit behind the plague.

The furry creatures that you women despise were nothing more

than the messengers of death. That little rat scurrying across the

floor is what almost caused the death of the entire world. Doctors

decided to research the rats and discovered the rats were carrying

fleas which had plague. Since we never cleaned our streets the rats had

reproduced in vast amounts and were all around us giving us their fleas.

In order for this to never happen again we need to better our

medicine to fight plagues and other diseases and clean our streets so

that they are not breeding grounds for those filthy rodents.

Leonardo da Vinci

There are many great artists out there right now. From Raphael to Michelangelo. From paintings to statues, our times are the greatest in art. Great works like these will live on for the ages, to be seen by generations to come. Now there is one artist who does most of this and more. His name is Leonardo da Vinci. Scientist, mathematician, inventor, painter, sculptor, musician, architect, and more. He is most famous for two of his works, The Last Supper (as seen above) and the Mona Lisa (seen below).

Along with his famous paintings , da Vinci also had some great ideas for inventions that are revolutionary for our time. He has a sketch of an aerial screw (seen below) that a person can ride in the air. A great addition for war is an armored tank that will defeat any opponent without getting damaged. Maybe one day these inventions will be created and put to good use.

Interview with Leonardo d a Vinci

When and where you born? “I was born on April 15, 1452 in Vinci Italy. My mother was a young peasant woman and I was raised by my father Ser Piero and my stepmothers.”

What inspired you to become an artist? “When I was younger, my father apprenticed me to a fabled workshop of Verrocchio. Verrocchio's specialty was perspective. He told me that I had learned it very quickly and by the time I was in my twenties I was becoming famous

Who or what has influenced you Leonardo?

Even though I am more than a painter, as a basis I am really influenced by writings from ancient Greece and Rome.

What is it like having so many talents? “Having so many talents is a lot of fun. I can do the activities that I love and if I need something I can just do it myself.”

Which one of your works took the longest to complete? “Out of all my works the Mona Lisa took the longest to complete. I started in 1503 and finished the painting in 16 years. I feel it’s not unusual for me to take a long time to finish works seeing that there are many others that took time and some I feel that I cannot finish.”

Why did you paint the Mona Lisa? “I painted the Mona Lisa for a merchant that wanted a portrait of his wife. Her name was Lisa del Giocondo and I took a long time to paint her so that I could get it right, especially around her smile.”

Why didn’t you ever finish some of your paintings? “Well, because I would get bored with them and so uninterested that I would just put it down and not touch it again.”

So, I hear you are an inventor. What kind of things have you invented? “I have invented the parachute, the giant crossbow, the flying machine and a bunch of others.”

If you don’t mind will you tell us a little bit of information about each one? “Sure. A parachute is a “Wing like cloak” and is triangular in shape. If a man have a tent made of linen of which the apertures have all been stopped up, and it be twelve braccia (about 23 feet) across and twelve in depth, he will be able to throw himself down from any great height without suffering injury. A giant crossbow is my version of a mass destruction weapon. It is mobile with 6 wheels and it can be armed with huge rocks or flaming bombs. The flying machine was inspired by birds and bats and how they fly. It has a platform that you would lay on and it has foot and hand pedals and flapping, rotating wings.

What have you found to be the most interesting? “The most interesting thing I have seen would be mechanical gears. I study them and whenever I look at them all I can think is “Wow that is so cool how something can work that way!”

Well thank you for the interview Leonardo “No Problem, thank you for having me.”

Is there beef between Raphael and Michelangelo? As everyone knows, Raphael and

Michelangelo are two of the greatest

artists alive. Now I have noticed some

“artistic rivalry” between the two but

I think it is more than that. Recently

Raphael finished his painting “The

School of Athens “ (Bottom Right) in

the Vatican. What caught my

attention is how Michelangelo is

placed (See Right) compared to the

other artists included like Leonardo

da Vinci (See Bottom Left). He seems

alone and down compared to everyone

else.

People have said Raphael was

debating on whether to place

Michelangelo in the painting or not.

When asked, Raphael said he was “just

trying to pay homage to all the great

artists”. From what I see I think

there's more to the way Michelangelo

is painted than just paying homage

to him.

Dear, Florentina

My husband is always yelling at me about my cooking. I understand that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach but what can I cook that will make him happy?

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

Try making him something new. There has been this new vegetable circling around the markets called the potato. I heard all you do is boil them in soup. Maybe he might enjoy that.

Dear, Florentina

I really want to watch some Shakespeare plays but I feel I will be ridiculed by my really manly friends. What should I do?

Playboy

Dear Playboy,

There is nothing to be ashamed of. If you look back to the times of Greeks it was only men that viewed plays. Seeing that plays are one of few forms of entertainment I say it is okay to go see some plays especially from such a great writer like William Shakespeare.

To the editor:

While talking to Galileo about his studies, he was informing me of a theory he has that the planets revolve around the Sun.

Since I can remember I have understood that the Sun revolved around the Earth. I have never questioned this for fear that the pope will be angered. Galileo has been talking about his idea and even plans on publishing a book about his ideas. Seeing that the pope usually doesn’t like people to go against the church it might go bad for Galileo.

I have seen you include articles about Galileo and they always praise him so I wonder what your opinions on his ideas are. Do you feel the pope would take drastic actions against Galileo and do you think he should?

Carlo Auditore

Reply

Dear Carlo,

We have featured information from Mr. Galileo before in our magazine and we are glad you noticed since that means you have bought our magazine before. Now about your concern with Mr. Galileo, his views are his own but from a religious standpoint I feel the pope should do something but only on his writings like maybe censor them but if he is just saying his beliefs they should not get involved since he is a great astronomer and seems to understand more about astronomy than most people. No matter what my opinion is it does not change the decisions of the pope and church if they decide to take action against Galileo.

I hope this answered your questions I had about Galileo’s beliefs and I hope you continue buying our magazine.
