President’s Message
Sisters, Tis’ the season! The holidays are approaching, and there seems to be some excitement in the air. I hope you are all enjoying every minute of it as we celebrated Thanksgiving, a precious time for celebrating family and friends. Speaking of celebrating, at our October meeting, we spent time reflecting on who we are as a chapter. The strengths of our chapter were echoed in phrases such as “diversity of educational areas,” “kind and supporting,” “active members,” “dedication,” and “thoughtful.” “Outreach” and “philanthropy” were also used to describe our chapter. We have so many things to celebrate! As we near the holiday season, I encourage and chal-lenge us all to give back and continue to be committed to our profession. Commitment and giving back are themes for our December meeting. Our next meeting is only a week away, and I look forward to seeing you all. The December “Christmas Auction” is always one of my favorite events of the year. We get to fellowship and have fun, all while raising money for our scholarships for beginning teachers. The Monroe group is hosting this won-derful annual tradition at Cuthbertson High School and we will begin at 9:00 that morning. Please bring some of your favorite goodies to auction as we join together to support our new educators. I encourage you to also invite a friend who you might like to see join our sisterhood. As we strive to increase chapter membership, this is a great event to introduce friends to Delta Kap-pa Gamma and allow us to meet potential members. Let us all share our pride in our organization through this event! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing you on December 3 at 9:00! In Sisterly Love,
Kim

Schools for Africa Fundraiser
At the October meeting, water bottles were distributed to everyone and this was for an important fundraiser.
After you’ve drank the water, keep the bottle and cut a hole in the side for change. Collect your dimes and then turn in your full bottle at a later meeting and all the money will go to Schools for Africa.
So keep hydrated and save your change for a good cause.

Something to think about…
Early in October, Hurricane Matthew moved up the coast of North Carolina bringing damaging winds and
flooding to our eastern counties. Regional Directors and Chapter Presidents reached out to members in the
affected areas offering help. Delta Kappa Gamma Emergency Fund money was made available to those
who were eligible. DKG sisters from other states contacted me to ask if we were ok.
That’s genuine spiritual fellowship!
Thinking about others and supporting important causes, like the Emergency Fund, are part of our Society.
State and chapter initiatives give assistance to a variety of projects and individuals. During this month of
“Thanksgiving” consider making a contribution to an Eta State Fund or the NC DKG Educational Foundation.
The benefits are many, for the receiver as well as the giver.
How will we pay it forward?
Sheila

Time to Introduce Yourself
By: Susan Phipps, Chair, Educational Law & Policy Committee
Now that the election is complete and next year’s “long session” of the NC General Assembly is still a couple
months away, this is the perfect time to contact your state Senator and Representative. Fort your state Sena-
tor and Representative. For some, this will be a new person, so it is even more important in this case to
make an early contact. We would like each member to introduce herself to both representatives and share
your vision of what an excellent NC education system would look like.
The best way to make this contact is by calling their local offices in your area to make an appointment to chat
about the importance of a strong public school system in North Car-olina. Another good way is to email your
representatives.
To find out who represents you, go to the NC Legislature website and at the top of the page click on “Who
Represents Me?” Click your county on the map and there is your representative. In your email, try to have a
clever subject line to make sure the email is opened and read. To review DKG’s important educational is-
sues, go to ncdkg.org. click on “Leadership” and then “Committees” to choose the Educational Law & Policy
Committee. There you will find a White Paper about our issues and other important information.
Once our Senators and Representatives go to Raleigh in late January, it is harder to get an appointment with
them due to many committee meetings and floor sessions, not to mention a lot of travel time on your part to
get to Raleigh. Early bird gets the worm! Yum! Go for it!

Tech Tip
Research has shown that teens have difficulty discerning fake news from
real news. Help the teens you know understand how to tell the difference.
Here’s suggestions from FactCheck.org: http://

as a true tech tip but it seems timely!
