The Derryfield School’s Soccer Girls Win Championship Again! BY KATRINA HOLMAN MANCHESTER – e Derryfield School’s girls varsity soccer team, who were seeded third this year in Division 4, won their third straight State championship on Nov. 6 at SNHU in Manchester. True team- work produced shut-out victories with comfortable margins though- out the play-offs. e Derryfield girls were play- ing better on natural grass, despite the fact that Derryfield has its own synthetic turf, so they contested the quarterfinal game on their home grass to beat sixth-seeded Cole- brook 2-0. But the semifinal and final games are played on neutral- territory synthetic turfs of differ- ent sizes, and there too the Cou- gars won – both times 2-0. In the semifinal on Tuesday Nov. 2 at Ha- nover, they defeated second-seeded Gorham (whom they had bested in a preseason scrimmage), and four days later, at their only meeting this year, Derryfield vanquished top- seeded Sunapee in the tournament final. e three defenders – wings Alisa de Bruyn Kops (10) of Amherst and Emilyann Keller (5) of Bedford, and center back Kimberly Pollock (16) of Bedford, all seniors – were in large part responsible for those shut-outs, playing every second of the fast- paced semifinal and final games with fine-tuned synergy. In between powerful kicks and well-directed headers, co-captain Kimmie direct- ed her teammates and called out steady encouragement. Alisa and Emmy saved their share in front of the net – Alisa notably with a dra- matic header in the semi – but often they neutralized their opponents by coming far forward, even as far as the center on those large fields, and regaining control for their team. Ju- nior midfielder Carla Nyquist (6) of New Boston also saved a close-call in the semi with a header from the goal line. e turf at Hanover is lon- ger and narrower than Derryfield’s, and the pitch at SNHU is bigger in both dimensions than any oth- er field the high school teams play on, so some balls are bound to get through the defenders. Freshman goalie Hannah Menakaya of Man- chester proved her worth! In the second half of the final alone, I not- ed four dramatic saves. In the semifinal, sophomore for- ward Roz KennyBirch (4) of Exeter scored the first goal 8 minutes into the second half with a shot that went high over the head and gloves of Gorham’s goalie, who would ul- timately have 10 saves to her cred- it. With 6:25 minutes remaining on the clock, junior forward Mimi Coppinger (2) of North Hampton capitalized on a throw-in to boot the ball into the net from about 18 yards out. It was gratifying to see Mimi get this glory because game after game, time after time, this pe- tite dynamo would zoom with the ball for a long stretch through the obstacles right down to the base line before passing it off to a teammate. In the championship game, Roz again scored the first goal, this time 25 minutes into the first half. Der- ryfield’s second goal came with just 8 minutes remaining: co-captain se- nior midfielder Aislinn Smith (14) of Henniker was in position for a cor- ner kick but instead used a fake-out short pass away-from-net to Mimi; that led to an opportunity seized by freshman striker Chloe Warner (3) of Windham. Aislinn, who had the most total season goals, and Mimi were named to Division 4 First Team; Kim and senior forward MacKenzie Logan (7) of Windham, who scored the 2 quarterfinal goals, to Second Team. Congratulations to the 2010 N.H. Champions of Division 4 – The Derryfield School’s Girls Soccer Team. In the semi-finals, they faced Salem but with some strong defense by Anna Sparks and Zoey Shapiro and goals scored by Hailey Johnson (2), McKenna Hopp, and Allison Chapman, they prevailed again by a score of 4 – 2. As division 2 defending state champions, they were ready for the match against Sanborn. With the game tied at 2 – 2 after regulation on goals by Han- nah Chick and Caroline Boudreau, the defense stayed strong behind the commanding play of Alana Bar- retto and Bree Johnson. Overtime could not resolve the tie and the game went to penalty kicks.
