Current fund raising plan ofInternational Institute for Child Protection (IICP)

International Institute for Child Protection is an independent nonprofit and managed by volunteers in Gambia. We enjoy Observer Status (No.300) with the African Human Rights Commission and in Special Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC since 2010. We don't receive any local government funding. This is intentional, so that we can fight vigorously for child’s rights wherever those rights are violated, without compromise, and without having to worry about losing funding.

This also means that we depend entirely on people like you to fuel our fight for justice. Did you know? IICP operates on a total budget of less than USD20,000 a year. This means every dollar you donate makes a huge difference.

So please help fuel the fight for safety and justice for children. It's easy; ask for our bank account number and swift code and we promise to put your donation to very good use. Thank you.

BackgroundInternational Institute for Child Protection (IICP), is a non-profit making organization based in Serrekunda The Gambia. The organization was founded in 1998 by child rights experts and concern individuals. This was in response to the social crisis triggered by dramatic increase in children’s rights violation particularly in Gambia. The organization aim to coach and provides adequate information. It also aims to organize and mobilize network of organizations to advocate for change. Pursue initiatives that integrate children in effective child protection policies formulation. Our emphasis is on child participation in all matters of interest to the child. Our coaching focuses on practical and ethical approach to child development holistically.

IICP is committed to child’s rights protection and promotion including through members of their family. As an organization we are registered with The Gambia Attorney General Chambers as a charitable organization limited by guarantee (No.

311/2006). We also enjoy observer status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (No.300). We are an NGO with Special Consultative Status with United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2010. The organization also enjoys working relations with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The organization is member of West Africa civil society’s anti-corruption organizations.

The organization has a Board of Directors (Board). The Board consists of eleven eminent persons in social work, legal and humanitarian affairs. The Board functions as advisory to the management committee on administrative matters. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the organization is its secretary. Board meetings are held three times a year.

The organization also has an Honorary Committee (HC) consisting of eminent persons in the area of humanitarian affairs. The role of the honorary committee is to ensure the existence of the organizations’ fund raising activities. The HC principle functions are to supervise fund raising and project implementation. Its secretary is the CEO. The HC meets twice a year.

Our Management Committee (MC) is responsible for daily management activities of the organization. It consists of the CEO, financial manager, legal officers, social

workers, receptionist/secretary, office cleaner, messenger and a secretariat. The MC is accountable to both the Board and HC. The MC holds regular staff meetings.

The organization appoints an auditor to exam the books annually. Occasionally the organization hires the services of consultancy firm for specific works. The financial year of the organization begins March and ends April the following year. The financial year coincide with the annual general meeting. The annual general meeting is held in presence of the Board of Directors, Honorary Committee, Management Committee and sympathizers of the organization. Strategic extra ordinary meetings are held twice a year to coincide with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) and UN ECOSOC sessions. During such meetings discussions are centered on urgent matters of interest to pursuance preparation of interventions (statements) on child and human rights situations in Africa.

The organization is established in recognition of the fact that the African child is an opportunity as well as a challenge. Governments and caregivers are challenged at every level of child development. Opportunities and challenges are often observed in development processes of the child. Successful child up-bring also depends on the environment in which the child grows.

However, the challenges confronting parents as well as governments are often compounded by economic, social, political and cultural issues. These phenomena are either natural or manmade to extent of creating vulnerable children. Most of these vulnerable children are opened to all forms of abuses. The organization is

motivated to act with a view to resolve child right violations holistically. We provide coaching, adequate information, legal, and other services as tools for child rights protection and promotion at regional and national level. Networking with likeminded organizations is vessel for achieving our objectives in a cost effective manner.

The organization is working on five projects. These are:

Dissemination and awareness-raising UNCRC concluding observations and recommendations on the combined second and third periodic reports of the Gambia

Advocacy for change and end to corruption Seeking justice for children with one or both parents incarcerated Trafficking and smuggling in human beings Interventions before treaty bodies

Page 8: The Do-Good Strategic Plan Template for: Non … · Web viewFive Years Strategic Plan for: International Institute for Child Protection (IICP) Developed by: IICP Board of Directors

As we pursue these important projects, the need for greater accountability and out-reach is clear. IICP subscribe to international, regional, sub-regional and national child rights initiatives. The organization is focusing energy on preventive measures, ranging from capacity building in digital and physical monitoring, security and peer review. We will strengthen protection mechanisms allowing our activities and activist to mitigate risk with which they are faced. We will also pursue out-reach programmes to reach young people, parent teacher and faith base associations through our network of “Children Action Initiative” with emphasis on Gambia.

The profile of our target groups extend from children denied an education, to members of their family deprived of equitable access to public services and to elections decided by money not votes. We are aware that public sector reaction to rights protection comes in many forms and impact disproportionately on the vulnerable population. We are also aware that rights violations don’t just deprive the most vulnerable – they undermine justice and economic development, crate conflicts and instability and destroy public trust in leaders.

Results of rights violation are clear; the real extent of the problem is harder to pin down. We therefore, recognized that rights protection is essential. The organization is working with stakeholders to innovate and adapt to shifting dynamics in rights protection in Gambia. During the year 2013 to 2014 the organization conducted series of analysis of child, human and peoples’ rights situation in Gambia. The survey recognized the need to involve children, youth, parent teacher and faith base associations deeply in the organizations framework. The survey also recognized the need to link local rights protection and promotion initiatives with sub-regional and international efforts. The organization has currently in working relationship with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) though an MOU and University of The Gambia (UTG), Gambia Christian Council (GCC), and Supreme Islamic Council (SIC). The organization will engage the government and parliamentarians to enhance legal instruments on human rights protection of children and members of their family.

The organization envisioned challenges in the pursuance of it projects. We are worried about the increasing numbers of reported cases of weaken state accountability and reprisal against activities. We are concern also about sacking of public officials/care givers, in appropriate use of public funds and security of the network and impact of these on lives of children. We are also concern about inadequate basic services addressing social welfare and decrease in health budget. The organization takes into account the growing commensurately with public and private connection to trafficking and smuggling in

Page 9: The Do-Good Strategic Plan Template for: Non … · Web viewFive Years Strategic Plan for: International Institute for Child Protection (IICP) Developed by: IICP Board of Directors

human beings and bribery and corrupt practices. The organization will work to overcome these challenges. We will establish “rights investigation hubs” or monitor and mentor groups across Gambia. We will provide training, equipment and protection to further investigate and document child, human and peoples’ rights violations. Other challenging issues are conflicts and instability at national

and sub-regional level. We will work to strengthen data collection, investigation, network and growth has source to new and innovative ways to fight corruption and safeguarding children in the future. VisionThe organization envisioned a democratic society free from child abuse, neglect, and exploitation were all enjoy right to development and peace.

MissionThe organization stands committed to demonstrate and meet challenges of poverty on parents, which also affect children to the extent of child abuse and neglect. To address issues of adequate knowledge with regards to rights and well-being of children and work for expansion on set of convictions relative to social, economic, political and cultural rights.

ValuesOur professional standards are preserved values deeply rooted in strong moral principles.

Championing the CauseThe organization intervention is an attempt to effect change and end to child rights violations in Gambia. We intervene because child, human and peoples’ rights violation is an insidious plague that is impacting negatively on 1.8 million residences in Gambia. This insidious plague is not shrinking. The organization is championing the cause for transparency, accountability, and safeguarding children. We want to strengthen Gambia youth’s ability to fight rights violations in other to enhance respect for life, basic services delivery, democracy and the rule of law.

Projects and Programmes

Dissemination and awareness-raising Of Gambia reports to UN bodies

The organization expresses its concern that knowledge of UNCRC concluding observation and recommendations on the periodic report of The Gambia remains limited, including among children, families and the public at large, in particular in child rights and CSO, owing mainly to the lack of funding and systematic dissemination of the Convention and concluding observations of the initial report of Gambia to the UN Committee on Economic Social and Cultural Rights.

Anti-Corruption Project:In West Africa, there is a sub-regional body known as– Economic Committee of West African States (ECOWAS). All the countries in West Africa subscribe to the treaty establishing ECOWAS and the ECOWAS Protocol on the Fight Against Corruption. However, member state of the ECOWAS faces an increasingly challenging environment in implementation for change and end to corruption. Efforts to fight corruption continue to shrink. The 2013 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (TICPI) gave general overview of high level of corruption in West Africa. The TICPI measures

the perceived levels of public sector corruption. In West Africa the high public sector corruption level is compounded by inadequate accountability to the people. In its current form, accountability is more favorable to donor agencies than to the peoples. The issues of injustice, inequality and bad governance contribute to weak accountability in the use of public funds in the ECOWAS sub-region. It is in this context that IICP seek to network with national, sub-regional, international anti-corruption

organizations and stakeholders to innovate and adapt to these shifting dynamics.Amachi Africa Children of Inmates Project:Amachi Africa Children of Inmates is an attempt at providing mentoring services to a very special group of children, those with a parent currently or formally incarcerated. The goal of Amachi Africa Children of Inmates is to assist these children in achieving their full potential by engaging them in consistent and committed mentoring relationship with trusted people of faith and communities and to identify, evaluate and report to policy makers, and public officials and funding agencies the most effective strategies and practices of faith based mentoring.
