FROM OUR MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN I want to thank everyone who renewed their membership this year and wel- come all the new members to DDSC. Total membership for this year was 124 members with 31 NEW Members. This is the highest number of new memberships the club as seen in the last few years. Many of our new mem- bers were referred by current members. Referrals are one of the best ways to promote and grow the club – thank you to all who referred family and friends. Our new members contributed to the success of all three of our mid-week Mammoth trips. Check out the Photo Album page on our website, www.skidondiego.org, and you will see old and new friends having a great time. As you know club activities have been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus so this will be the last newsletter for this ski season. I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. And I look forward to seeing everyone soon. Ellen Locke, Membership MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I am writing this letter on March 24, while we are all laying low to avoid the global contagion, taking care of ourselves and each other. I hope that when you read it (on April 1?) we will be further along the path to recovery. We all have so much to be grateful for and so much to hope for. Don Diego will probably have no formal activities in April, so Karl will be making the April newsletter the last of the 2019- 2020 Season. The April meeting looks unlikely, but I will send an email notice if there is one. The End of Season Party is postponed, and Safari Park has given us a year to apply our deposit and reschedule. Maybe a very spe- cial Kick Off to the next ski season in October or so. Almost nothing stops Sabine’s Thursday morning hikes: www.meetup.com/San-Diego-Skiers/. If conditions allow, you may want to suggest other informal get-togethers, which I can publicize by an email blast. Let me know. We had a fine season, with lots of new members and new ener- gy. The Board of Directors will continue to meet, by conference call until live meetings are OK. Looking forward, Ed Offstein - DDSC President NOTE: These activities have been postponed/cancelled pending the resolution of the ongoing coronavirus situation. Please Note: SKI CHATTER will be taking a longer than usual hiatus. There will be no May issue due to the coronavirus situation. There will also not be a June, July, or August issue; the next issue will be the September issue (hopefully available at the end of August). Please check our website for current club information. Club activities will also be announced via e-mail blasts to the mem- bership.

FAR WEST CONVENTION

COVID-19 TAKES OUT CONVENTION 2020: Far West SkiAssociation’s 88th Annual Convention, scheduled to take placeMay 28-31, 2020, in beautiful Portland, Oregon, will NOLONGER HAPPEN. After several phone calls between ourBoard of Trustees, Travel V.P.s, and Convention Chair, it wasclear that no matter what procedures we would put in place, wecould not guarantee the safety of our members, partners andguests, while adhering to the mandatory “stay home, stay safe”order from our governor.

It was agreed that our 88th Annual Convention could not takeplace on the dates we had set. We were unable to find a suitabledate in 2020 that would work, and still keep our members andmember partners safe, but we were able to work with the RedLion Hotel on the River – Jantzen Beach in getting our event setover to June, 2022. Northwest Ski Club Council had planned aterrific five-day-event for you all. So, in 2 years, we’ll just do itall over again.

Some Ski Industry News (reprinted from the FAR WEST NEWS FLASH)

We were fortunate this ski season to get all our midweekMammoth ski trips completed before Mammoth shut down theiroperations due to the ongoing coronavirus situation Hopefullythis will be resolved prior to the start of the next season laterthis year.

The March Midweek trip was successfully concluded with someexcellent skiing. The prior month, February, was unusualweather-wise since it received no snowfall at all. I don’t thinkthat this has everhappened before.Fortunately themountain receivedalmost a foot of freshsnow just prior to ourarrival. Togetherwith excellentgrooming this pro-vided for great skiingconditions. Therewas freshly groomedcorduroy each morning although it did get chopped up by theend of the day which required extra enegy expenditure.

The catered dinnerMonday night was anexcellent Mexicanbuffet which restoredall the calories lostthat day on the slopes. The Happy Hour foodand drinks at Slocumswas another signifi-cant contribution torestoring lost calories.

Here are some pics from the March Mammoth ski trip

"Our long time good friend Tom Boren passed away of lung complications Feburary 28 in Herrin,Illinois where he lived with his wife, Jean, of 61 years. Both Tom & Jean were very active in theConvair Ski Club for many years and Tom worked in the Contract Proposal Group, Jean was a travelagent and did all of the travel planning. Tom was an active trip leader.

Both Tom & Jean were excellent skiers and planned ski trips both within the U.S. and outside theUnited States. One would never know that Tom had a lung problem most of his life, remembering himskiing difficult runs non-stop, top to bottom. Tom & Jean were active in the early days when the clubwas just taking shape and in the Dry Land Ski School in Balboa Park. We all will remember Tom withhis big smile for everyone wearing his ever present feathered cowboy hat and reluctantly we will saygoodbye to a dear friend."
