The Potato Famine of the mid-1800s in Ireland was one of the world'sworst human disasters and many Irishman saw fit to leave their homelandto survive. One such family was the Dunn family of Kilkenny, Ireland. Butfirst. .. History 101!

Meanwhile, in England, Trevellian became theExchequer for the Crown. A fiercely dedicatedloyalist, workaholic, who became obsessed withthe "Irish Question"; an idealist who saw the needbut was equally insistent that the Irish be made towork for their living and determined not to raise

Boatloads of emigrants were heading for In the fall of 1845 the Irish awoke on a rainy, the New World, America, even while the Irish foggy day to an overpowering stench that filled thepopulation tripled at home, to escape the tyranny air. Investigating they suddenly discovered to theirof their British conquerors. Equally important to shock the potato plant so vital for life turningnote here, that emigration was favored by Britain black and dying. One can only imagine theirto the point that often landlords would finance despair. Ireland was in crises.their travel. One landlord calculated that it costabout 7 pounds to keep a starving, indigent tenant The British had seen in the recent pasts, manyone year on welfare. The cost of a boat ticket to crop failures, and in fact reacted quite quickly toNew York about 4 pounds, to Quebec 3 pounds; this one, importing corn and barley into thehalf price for the children. It was officially seen as country and in reality they managed to save theone answer to the "Irish problem", an economical lives of millions of Irishman that year. As theway to downsize. disaster spread across Ireland and its magnitude

became known to the crown it was seized as anopportunity to "reform".

By 1846 the second potato crop failed, millions ofIrishman had died ... and emigration became areality for millions more, fueled by desperation fortheir lives ... no sense of adventure here.

Ironically, with the next 50-75 years the BritishLords found themselves in a unique position aswell. Out of regular contact with England andwith less and less influence in parliament; havingpurposely estranged themselves from their Irishsubjects, they became isolated themselves; findingthemselves alone in a country they really couldn'tcall home. As we shall see this will become aserious problem for the Irish poor in later years.

In the late 17th century and early 18th century theBritish trading companies were scouring the worldfor trade and one of the items surfacing first in

generaL~:lls dependent on handouts. He establisheda plan of building roads across Ireland, putting theresponsibility for social refonn into the hands ofthe estate lords. "So much pay for so much stone".

Blinded by his idealism, shortsighted in hisenthusiasm, he failed to grasp the obvious. TheIrish were dying ... by the millions. A prolongedperiod of starvation had taken its toll. Nutritionallyincapable of doing the labor demanded of them, barefoot, unclothed, suffering from typhus, dysen-tery ... The solution became the problem. Millionsmore died on the rock piles struggling to eke out ameal.

As mentioned earlier, the estate lords, many ofthem incapable, incompetent buffoon's heretoforecontent to live off the taxes of their tenantsbecame increasingly indebted themselves and fran-tically sought relief from Britain. Others, mostnotably perhaps Lord Sligo of Sligo county,(northwest of Kilkenny) passionately pleaded onbehalf of their subject for relief but to no avail. These men for the most part had lost theirinfluence in Parliament, had no real politicalconstituency either locally or in Britain. Again, the real innocent victims were the Irish peoplethemselves.

In NovemberlDecember Ireland was hit by ablizzard, the worst ever recalled in history. 7weeks of blowing snow, drifting often to depths of50 feet! Imagine if you can millions of peoplehomeless, starving, living in caves, one room stonelean-to's ... The Irish began to believe they were"cursed altogether". Death became a blessing ...

Perhaps an even greater disaster affected our Irishancestors. Apathy. Historically an aggressive, fiercely pugnacious people, they suddenly becamesullen, withdrawn, passive ... almost indifferent totheir realization they were "cursed altogether".

In the mid 1800's a Famine ship left Sligo forQuebec with 500 people aboard bound for theNew World. Less than 12 could walk off the shipon arrival in Quebec! More than half died eitheron the voyage and were thrown over board at sea,or died in the infinnaries in Port.

They tell the story of a man and his wife with 2children sailing to New York and the baby dyingof the "fever". The mother is wailing with griefand not willing to part with her daughter. TheCaptain of the ship pulls the baby from her arms, throws the body over the side ... the mother jumpsover to be with her cherished daughter.

The weeping mother abandons ship,

To where her child has gone

The dry-eyed captain

Smokes his pipe

And the sailing ship

Sails on.

That is the way it was in 1848.

In October of 1848, a young 29-year-old Irishman,James C Dunn, left his family and sailed to NewYork City determined to create a home for hisfamily. Within weeks of his arrival he had settledin Newport Vermont. Within the very next fewyears 6 of his siblings were to follow and ourAmerican heritage begins.

Note: I \Vfote the above paragraph in October of1997 ... part of an introduction to publication of ourFamily History. Today it sounds trite ... almostsurreal ... suggesting a dream-like quality that couldnot have been further from their truth.

James Dunn left Ireland in October of 1848desperate, period. Frantic for his family, especiallyhis new wife and their very young daughter. .. prob-ably grieving over the possible loss of his parentswho more than likely would perish in the famineand be among the millions of unknown bodiesstrewn about the Irish country side in unmarked, hastily dug graves, worried sick about his 6siblings he left behind and scared to death of whatlay before him

PROFILERICHARD E. DUNN

[Richard F.. Richard, Thomas, Thomas #: 1]

Richard was born in 1917 on the family land onLong Hill Rd. (which is now known as Cram HillRd.) West Swanzey, N. H. In later years the familymoved to what was known as Schoolhouse #8 atthe top left side of Mill Hill Rd. (which waschanged to Dunn Hill Rd. in 1996 because of thenew 911 service).

He went to school in a one-room schoolhouse inWestport, which is like a suburb of West Swanzey, with grades 1-6 & the teacher was MargaretFreeman. He quite school in about the 8th grade towork in the woolen mill in West Swanzey, N. H.to help the family with bills. His father could notwork much because he had heart problems.

Richard told me, his son Ronald, that while he wasin the Army he drove ammo trucks over inGermany. He said he was driving a truckload ofammo from storage to one of the gun sites whenbombs from enemy sites started hitting all aroundhim. He said they never hit close enough to hurthim. While he was in the Army he would sendmoney home to help the family with bills.

Richard was driving his father, brother (John), &sister (Leona) to town so they could go to bingowhile he went to the VFW. Richard picked themup after bingo & went to Gomarlo' s Grocery Storeto pick up a few things. Then they started home &when they were about 3 miles from home hisfather slumped over on to him. They thought thattheir father had fallen asleep. But when John triedto sit him up they realized he was not breathing. They drove the rest of the way home. When theygot there they called Dr. Fox who lived inWinchester N. H. (which is the next town over, kind of southwest). The Dr. pronounced him deadat the house.

On Nov. 18, 1950 he married Evelyn DeRosier. She had a daughter named Janice June Naylor. He

They hada son Ronald Richard Dunn on Jan. 13, 1953.They moved a short while after to 42 WinchesterCt. Keene, N. H. In Dec. 1962 a few days beforeChristmas they had a fire which burned the housedown. A faulty oil burner furnace caused it. Theyrebuilt in summer of 1963. In 1976 he & his wifewent to Alaska to visit their son Ronald & hisfamily who were stationed there in the Air Force. From there they went to California to visit wife'sbrother, Disney Land & other attractions. Fromthere they went to Nevada & did a little gambling. This was the first time that they had been furtherthan New York State. His wife Evelyn died onSept. 21,1989 of cancer. He remarried in 1990 & moved to Florida a fewmonths later. While in Florida he came homeseveral times to have yard sales of the stuff he hadleft behind so he could have money to do what hewanted to. His new wife had come back to Keeneon Oct. 8th, 1991 to see if I could care for himback here because she could not do it anymore. OnOct. 9th, 1991 I (his son) received a phone callfrom a Dr. in Florida stating that Richard wasgone. I asked what he meant by that. He stated thathe had died just a few hours before he got a holdof me. Dr. said that Richard had been admitted tothe hospital that morning not feeling well. Dr. saidthat he was in the room talking to him. The Dr.turned to leave the room, when he heard a noise. He turned to see Richard take his last breath &there was nothing he could do.He was a typical Dunn. He would fight with hisbrothers & sisters. He complained that everyonetook advantage of him. He liked to fish & hunt. There is a story about him hunting with his brotherJohn. John had him sit on a stone wall while he &a relative did a drive to get the deer movingtoward him. When John & the relative got back towere they had left him, he was gone. They foundhim back at the house having a coffee. They foundout that he had been there since about Y2 hour afterthey had left. He also liked to do wood working, such as windmills & animal statues. He worked at several different jobs throughout his

life. He worked in the Woolen Mill in WestSwanzey in his younger days, Lynwood Heel &International Narrow Fabric both in Keene in hismiddle years, W.T. Grants & NGM both in Keene& Troy Mills in Troy N. H. in later years. Had toretire because of a heart attack. He had a couple ofother jobs but it is not known where.Note: This article was graciously prepared andsubmitted by Leona [Richard's sister], Jane Marie[Richards niece] and by his son Ron.
