Match Reports

Ladies 1's v Milton Keynes 1's Saturday 23rd Jnauary Lost 0 - 1

An investigation of Eastcote vs Milton Keynes

It has been summarised that the motion activities (time spent walking, cruising and sprinting) of field hockey are similar to rugby and Australian rules (Spencer et al, 2004). The game against MK did at times represent rugby and lacked clear rules. The 70 minutes did not only lead to exercise-induced muscle damage via disruption of sarcomeres from the eccentric muscle actions (Proske & Morgan, 2001) but from the physical contact. In the first half Irene did feel the physicality of the opposition particularly. However, MK edged the first half with a 1-0 lead. Eastcote did have one chance after a quick free hit from Emma found Macca who then turned the defender and played a ball that had the GK beat. It was unlucky that Philly did not get the contact required. Although down at half time, Berger & Pope (2011) have demonstrated that losing can sometimes lead to winning. A slight reshuffle in midfield formation and a second wind of energy meant Eastcote primarily had MK on the back foot. Any opportunities that MK did create, Big equally matched. However, the Eastcote pressure did not pay off. The relief MK demonstrated at the final whist suggests they knew Eastcote deserved more. Another 3 points up for grabs next week but as Paul Bryant stated “it’s not the will to win that matters, everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters”.

Men's 1's v Staines 2's Saturday 23rd January Won 14 - 0

Goal Hungry Eastcote went to Staines looking to get back to winning ways after dropping points the week before. On arrival the pitch was locked so we tried to guess the padlock code. People suggested random numbers, people's birthdays, then Gaz googled when Staines was founded. He said 1890 and Stan put it in but still no luck. Next suggestion was send the youngest to ask the oppo what the code is, so Isaac jogged off and came back with the code 1890 a code we have already had no luck with. Stan put the code in for a second time and somehow this time it worked and on to the pitch we go. An early shout for dod from Stan. On to the game, we were 7-0 up at half time with goals from Ripper, Gabs x2, Coops x3 and Sam. Second half saw us add another 7 with goals from Gabs x3, Coops, Thorpey, Euro and Sam. After the game the talk turned to the football results and some scores were known and others weren't. People didn't seem to know the Norwich score so just in case you missed it Norwich lost 5-4 to Liverpool. Mom- Gabs Dod- Coops (missed a sitter)

Eagles v Wootton Wanderers 2's (Friendly) Saturday 23rd January Drew 2 - 2

‘Being Friendly Was Our Downfall’

The term ‘friendly start’ is mentioned a lot in hockey but not many quite understand what it means. However after today’s performance, we all now know that Andy Laz fully understands the meaning of the phrase as 10 seconds into the match, he kindly passed the ball to Wootton’s striker and he was able to run past our defence and calmly beat the oncoming Z to give the visitors an early lead. Despite this, the Eagles played the next 10 minutes at high speed but were unable to get a goal. Then Wootton had a counter attack but the mighty Z was able to deny them a second goal. However soon after, Wootton’s defence were caught napping and they allowed youngster Ollie to run into the ‘D’ and reverse hit the ball past the desperate keeper; they were level. Moments later another youngster Luke had a chance to give the home side the lead but his top-corner bound strike was saved by a diving goalie. After 35 minutes, the teams were tied. The Eagles started the second half positively and this was rewarded as Rob’s mishit shot fell kindly for Ashley who was able to tap it into the empty net. The home side had the lead but they weren’t finished yet and Rob got into the ‘D’ and after a bit of uncertainty, he was able to push it into the goal but it was disallowed for some unknown reason. The Eagles then switched off and with 10 minutes remaining, Wootton were able to find an equalizer. This woke up the hosts and resulted in some fast-flowing offensive hockey and moments from time they won a short corner. Well, they should’ve had a short but once again; like the goal, it was disallowed. Enough was enough and Andy Laz had had enough. He marched up to the umpire and told him what he thought of him. However, the official did not take too kindly to this gesture and the Eagles centre back was sent off. Not long after that the final whistle blew and both teams came away without a loss, but also without a win. So after 70 minutes I think it’s fair to say: Being Friendly Was Our Downfall. Luke Defanis

Past Masters v Richmond Rogues Saturday 23rd January Won 5(2) - 3(1)

. . . Topsy Turvy Tussle The PM’s are becoming like Chelsea, you never know which team is going to turn up. We were playing at sunny Brunel and welcomed a late arriving Richmond team who had the audacity to take the lead with only 10 men on the field when their young midfield maestro strode along the goal line around the keeper to tap into an empty net. It wasn’t until they had 11 players that the PM’s started to play and to dominate possession with Lloydy, Steve and Buddy all having chances up front. Meanwhile at the back we were still being caught by raids inspired by long balls down the centre.

Page 4: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter 60 Season Editor ... · PDF fileThe Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter – 60th ... it’s not the will to win that matters, everyone has that. It’s

The EastcoNet 4 30th January 2016

After 15 mins we had a great move down the right when “L” fed Ian who fed Steve on the wing and his cross caused more havoc in their defence, eventually reaching Lloydy who beat the keeper to draw level. Not to be outdone Buddy added a second 5 mins later following good work from Sukhi, Tim and Dogra. With 15 mins to half time we were looking good, but despite having total control at the back where Pali, Gav and Harry were strutting their stuff we failed to make our dominance count and went in just the odd goal to the good. The half time talk was focused on getting more pace on the ball, finding our players earlier and using the flanks more. 2 mins into the 2

nd half we were caught by a ball

down the inside left channel when pressing too high, and their lone forward latched onto the ball and drove past a helpless keeper. So we had to start again and soon dominated possession once more, but the clear chances were much harder to come by, we had a number of shorts but failed to score. Surely we couldn’t lose this one but then we had a stroke of inspiration and a neat move involving what seemed like half the team split their resolute defence and there was the diving Steve to score with an excellent finish from a great pass by Tim. So just more of the same and we’d be home and dry, but again we got caught on the break with the same player having the same success and we were back to 3 – 3 mid-way through the half. This clearly inspired Richmond who had a brief purple period resulting in a couple of short corners which fortunately were well defended resulting in no further damage. So with 15 mins left we re-built our momentum and again dominated possession with Ian looking lively on the right Sukhi and Lloydy having loads of space down the left and Tim, “L” and Dogra doing their stuff in the middle. It was now only a matter of time but Richmond were hanging in there for an unlikely draw and the frustration was building. With 5 mins to go we broke the deadlock again when Lloydy scored a well deserved 2

nd having ran their

left back ragged all match. So were we going to let them back into it for a 3

rd time or

would our domination finally tell. Well the answer came when Tim again managed to deliver a superb pass to a dangerous position deep into their D and although Buddy had some work to do he finished emphatically for his 2

nd

goal and killed off the match with 2 mins left. Like last week the front line all played well, but although all 3 scored, this week’s MotM goes to Tim for his fine mid-field performance topped by 2 goal scoring passes. “Màlmand”

Ladies 2's v Hendon & Mill Hill 1's Saturday 23rd January Won 1 - 0

Dearest Editor, I forgot ...no, not the game in this instance (its etched vividly in my mind), but that I was writing, nay volunteered, to write the x***xx xxx x match report.

So, we got there, it was cold, damn cold, they had only 9 players and were, surprisingly, very dubious about the safety of the pitch. Lennie, captain, coach, fiancé, general all round good egg, had a bit of a cob on, there was to be NO negotiation, actually none was needed as she sashayed past the mesmerised Keith (umpire) with the imperious yet clearly seductive suggestion that all was well and the pitch was fine (something along the lines of " these are not the droids you are looking for " Keith ..." we are starting in 5 minutes" So we played, they had 10, we attacked and attacked and attacked and attacked and attacked and attacked . everyone played pretty well, we did everything but actually score. Coops refrain "and its 1-0" as we approached the goal, from the sideline was sounding more desperate. And then we scored, young Ceris, younger than my shinpads, she also won MOM. We won, that's all, have to go now, apologies to my regular reader. Kim

Ladies 3's v PHC Chiswick 4's Saturday 23rd January Won 4 - 0

Chiswick Locked Up This week the mighty 3s made a trip down to Chiswick, and everyone had a great feeling about this week with Steph, Andrea and Lucy all managing to turn up sober! Having all arrived on time we all had a great warm starting with sprints after finding a note in the Wormwood Scrubs west wing, oops I mean the Linford Christie Stadium toilets, saying “don’t turn around unless you are good at running”. I must say, after seeing the changing rooms, the note was actually somewhat scary! After a slightly shaky few minutes at the start of the match, the 3s got into the flow of it, and we started to play some beautiful hockey. We were looking invincible! There were some great passes from Andrea through to Tonia; and Fabi and Rhiannon were linking up well on the right hand side of the pitch. Although we were all over Chiswick we were starting to struggle with scoring a goal, but not through a lack of trying! There were some good balls into the D from Steph and Catherine, which sadly the post players just missed. However with a few short corners having been awarded to us already, we knew we could get a goal before half time. This happened with only two minutes left in the first half after winning a short corner and Tonia placed it perfectly (with a little of bit help from the Chiswick first runner!) In the second half Chiswick come back and they were fighting hard. They had some good chances but thankfully the 3s had Fi and her new kit to rescues us, making sure that the score remained 1-0. With a great break down the pitch, Lucy scored a fab goal to make it 2-0, which calmed us down again and got us back to the sexy hockey which we showed in the first half. Shortly after the second goal, we won a short corner and Lucy smashed the ball into the goal, giving her, her 2

nd

for the match. 3-0. Chiswick were starting to look quite

downhearted but we showed no sympathy. Eastcote continued to play well and Rhiannon hit another one home before fulltime to make the final score 4-0. MOM was a close one this week with almost everyone on the pitch getting a nomination (because we are all awesome) and ended up being shared between Freya, Alice and Beau. DOD was between Delia, after she decided to make up a car parking space in the middle of the car park, and Andrea after she fell on her bum during the match but Andrea just won the most votes. 3 more points for the 3s and another unbeaten week in 2016! This week we take on Teddington and hopefully we will keep up with our winning streak.

The prestigious Champions Trophy pits the best of the best against each other in the ultimate battle to become champions. It’s back to Great Britain for England, Scotland and Wales as GB prepare in their last tournament before the Rio Olympic Games.

This world-class event is being held 18-26 June, at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre and will feature the GB women's team, the Netherlands, the USA, plus three more teams who are still fighting for qualification.

A change in the qualification process was decided, similar to the one used up until the 2010 edition. Alongside the host nation, the last Olympic, World Cup and World League champions qualify automatically as well as the winner of the 2014 Champions Challenge I. The remaining spot will be nominated by the FIH Executive Board, making a total of 6 competing teams. If teams qualify under more than once criteria, the additional teams will be invited by the FIH Executive Board as well.

With the World League Final due to take place this December, we will soon know who will join Great Britain, Netherlands and the USA in the fight to be crowned the best of the best.

Secure your seats at this world-class Olympic legacy venue and get behind your nation as the best in the world collide!

Session guide and prices

From Colts Chairman Now that we are settled following the festive season, hockey is well underway and with the exception of the previous week with the bad weather, we are managing to get lots of good hockey underway. I am enjoying seeing how well our young members are playing, we have held a number of colts management meetings recently and pleased to report back that we are very much joined together in our approaches to coaching and we have enjoyed sharing some ideas for each age group. We have reviewed a number of administrative items and pleased to report that the safety of our colts is extremely important to us. Please remember now, it is definite that all children must have shin pads and a gum shield to play. I was pleased to learn that the U 14 girls had a good result on Sunday with a 1-1 draw and the U 16 boys had good games against tough oppositions and the U 16 girls had a convincing win against Ealing 7-1. Fitness There is fitness in the hall Mondays at 8.30 £3.00 per person with Gary

U16 Boys Dragons v Ashford Sunday 24th January Won 1 - 0 The Eastcote side played against a strong Ashford side this Sunday, at our home pitch at Brunel University and we came away with a 1-0 victory. We were put ahead early by a brilliant goal by Akshay at a short corner. We continued to dominate the first half, with lots of unconverted chances, set up by the excellent midfielders, Thomas and Jack. After the half time break, Ashford came back strong putting pressure on our defence. However, we remained defiant and did not concede with persistent defending, by the Akshays and Matthew. It was a tight game but we still triumphed. All players were fantastic and deserve congratulations. Well done Eastcote!

U16 Boys A’s v Maidenhead Sunday 24th January Won 6 - 0 The game got off to a slow start while both teams sized each other up. As the first half progressed, Eastcote started to produce some excellent attacks, however a dogged defence by Maidenhead kept out some promising chances, including four short corners. A serious half time team talk by Roger inspired us to take control of the game and from there on, with some great team plays, we started to put the ball in the back of the goal with regularity. Good one/two’s from the open play by Ashwin, Zak, Michael and Brij allowed us to drive down the wings and play incisive passes to the forwards, which allowed Joe to skilfully dribble past their centre backs and push it past their keeper. Excellent pressure on their back line by Harry, Sam and Chris stopped a vast majority of clearances keeping Maidenhead in their half and on the back foot. They piled on the pressure with multiple attacks and good recycling of the ball, opening up the chances for Harry and Chris to slot in the ball. Leeran was a solid mid-fielder cutting out their passes through the middle and providing ball for the forwards where Bradley was able to create chances in front of goal. The defence was largely unchallenged however when Maidenhead did break through there was great cover tackles from Alex and Bryn stopping their attacks before they started. Kabir was a great distributor of the ball, always keeping a calm head and playing sensible and controlled passes to everyone on the field. Oskar had a quiet day in goal and on the few occasions that he was asked to get into action, he safely defended the goal and distributed to the back line. Special mention should be made to the goal scorers Harry and Joe, who scored two each and Zak and Chris who scored one each. Their clinical finishing confirmed the victory but it was a good team effort in the second half that pulled the game together. Well done to all. Bryn Jones
