The End of the School Year, the Unofficial Start toSummer

On our way back from town, I was telling Josh and Kayla that a lot has changed since theystarted school last Fall. The example I gave was that back then we drove them to school almostevery day, but then after Christmas they truly became walkers.

To which Kayla said that she wished she had been more enthusiastic about walking sooner inthe school year so she could have walked more often. I pointed out that she was the one whowanted to be able to walk to school with one of her friends, and that all I did was give herguidance on how she might do it (set her alarm, get up earlier). She gradually began to get upearlier in the morning and was often dressed before 7 a.m. Unfortunately, the rest of her plansdidnt come to fruition, but Ive still been proud of her.

Even Josh, who is nine and resistant to having to walk to school has warmed up to the ideaconsiderably. It helps that he can sometimes walk with his friends from next door. I think that thestrongest motivation for both Josh and Kayla is that walking allowed them to spend time withfriends from the neighborhood.

It has been a big transition for Kayla, I think, from fifth grader to sixth grade but she handled itvery well. Choir was a new thing for her but she handled it very well. She earned consistent Asin all of her classes.

Joshs year in the third grade was also a year of transition. His teacher explained to us that thework becomes much harder and more independent once he reaches the fourth grade.
