• Services market in the EU (70% of GDP and employment in EU);
• Service standardization not completely new to CEN (numerous service aspects already exist in available standards);
• Standardization exclusively in services currently tentative and ad-hoc;
• Standards concerning the service sector need to expand.

• August 2003:– Public enquiry launched by CEN/CMC on the web (
www.cenorm.be); • October 2003:
– EC Programming Mandate M/340 in the field of services addressed to CEN, CENELEC and ETSI;
• November 2003:– CEN Interim Report presented on the results received on
the enquiry; • December 2003:
– Approval of the mandate by CEN in the field of services.
2004• 9th March EC workshop ‘European Standardization for
Services’;• Creation of CEN/BT/WG 163 ‘Service
Standardization’;• Establishment of CEN/TF 167 ‘Security Services’
(Secretariat DIN);• 11th May CEN Open Day on Service Standardization
for European Federations; • Interim Report on M/340 to EC (June 2004);• Final Report on M/340 to EC (end 2004);

• CEN participation in EC ‘European Forum on Business Related Services’;
