“Plum blossoms while everything withers,

The snow and ice can cover miles of wilderness but lie only beneath;

What is there to be feared of the bitter Winter,

The plum blossoms to forecast the coming of Spring.

- On the twenty first day of August, year two thousand” A poem and painting by a Falun Gong practitioner while in detention, depicting the

steely will of practitioners to endure the extreme suppression and their ultimate faith in the triumph of Truth. Instead of a paintbrush, this traditional Chinese painting was drawn with a blue ballpoint pen made for export by forced labor. Many people risked their lives to protect this precious artwork and slip it out of the prison.

Another poem and painting by a Falun Gong practitioner while in detention (please also see the poem and painting in the section “Murder and Execution”). For Chinese, the lotus flower symbolizes purity and transcendence (from soil). The poem extols the transcendent teaching of Falun Gong, which purifies practitio-ners from materialism and the corrupted morality of contemporary Chinese society. It is a metaphor of the PRC government’s violence as merely a thunderstorm that washes dust away from the lotus flowers.

A painting by a female Falun Gong practitioner depicting her own tragic experiences. She was de-tained, beaten and force-fed unknown substances numerous times. Her husband was forced by the authorities to divorce her and she is currently homeless. All these sufferings were inflicted on her because of one thing: her peaceful petition to the PRC Government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong.
