“Mere Christianity?”
I remember reading sometime years ago a book about The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew Chapters 5-7). The author indicated that that great Sermon of Jesus, with its demanding expectations of disciples, is neither ir-relevant nor impossible. In fact, he said, the teachings of Jesus, embodied in the great sermon, have rarely been tried. We who say we believe the Bible actually have our own “Canon within the Canon.” We conveniently ignore scriptures which we find either too troublesome or too meddlesome. Recently, Rev. Steve Berger taught a class based on C.S. Lewis’ classic, Mere Christianity. When he used the word “mere” in his title, Lewis was cer-tainly not suggesting that the Christian faith is small, weak, ineffectual, or in-significant. Quite the contrary! In fact, to truly be a Christian means that Christ is Lord of our life and every part of it. For example, Lewis writes about giving (which he calls charities) in this way:
“Some people nowadays say that charity ought to be unneces-sary and that instead of giving to the poor we ought to be pro-ducing a society in which there were no poor to give to. They may be quite right in saying that we ought to produce this kind of society. But if anyone thinks that, as a consequence, you can stop giving in the meantime then he has parted company with all Christian morality. I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amuse-ments, etc is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charities excludes them. I am speaking now of ‘charities’ in the common way.”
(excerpt from Mere Christianity, Harper Collins) I want to thank Asbury member Louise Bowers for sharing this with me. It is indeed a joy to serve this congregation with those who are daily practicing genuine discipleship. What a fellowship, what a joy divine! Grace to You,

Sage Edelkind Sage is a Boy Scout from Troop ___ at Asbury UMC. He wanted to become an Eagle Scout and had to com‐plete a community project in order to do so. He chose to rebuild the floor on the large utility trainer that be‐longs to Asbury. Sage drew up a plan to complete this task and submitted it to the state council of scouting. The project was approved and Sage recruited several scouts to help in this project. They had to have a pro‐ject that took at least 40 hours to complete; it took Sage and his team a total of 70 man hours to com‐plete this task. He presented the completed trailer to Ed Boyd upon completion.

ELIJAH It Was Magnificent!
Thanks for all your kind words about the Asbury Choir’s presentation of Elijah. We were spent after it, but elated it went so well. To all who were able to be there, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your encouragement made our singing possible. We have some options on the horizon that we’ll publicize later. Yes, we did record Elijah, thanks to Bert Fackler, and we’ll let you know when it’s available. We’ll cover Elijah in worship until May 18. This summer, we’ll have our
usual slate of guests to lead. I’ll include the lineup in the next Asbury Rider. Goodwill,

Giving Tree Donations have been distributed to these designated agencies:
Panama Children’s Fund $2000 (School uniforms and food for children at our mission team's site)
Methodist Children's Home $1,000 FoodNet $1,000 (Will be given out periodically) UMCOR $250 Snowflake Fund $3,665 (Money will be held in this fund to pay for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas gifts for homebound). Some money was redistributed to these funds from the Giving Tree Fund. We only received $1456.00 in the Snowflake Fund, so $2200 was transferred to it. Thank you so much for your generosity and your concern for others at Christmas! Many people have been blessed by your gifts.
Asbury's Giving Tree just keeps on giving! During the week of Easter, snack bags, flowers, gifts, and greeting cards were distributed to over 200 of our homebound members, our New Friends members, and Meals on Wheels recipients. The Nurture Team was able to accomplish this task with the help of our generous members that gave to the Snowflakes Fund during Christmas and our dedicated volunteers who helped with this project. This terrific group was eager to shop, package, and deliver the gifts. A special thank you goes out to Betty McKnight, one of our homebound ladies who knitted beautiful dish cloths that were include with many of our gifts. The recipients of these Easter gifts are delighted that Asbury continues to remember them throughout the year. We are blessed that we can lift the spirits of many through this outreach and hope that you will continue to support this project.
