The Fillmore Flyer Volume 4, Issue 5 February 2013
Letter from the Principal…
The recent turn in the weather serves as a reminder for several weather-related procedures and policies at Fillmore.
Please remember…
Students will go outside unless the temperature or wind
chill is less than 15 degrees. Please make sure your child is
dressed properly for the weather.
We have a number of coats, hats, and gloves available for
students if they need one or more of them. Your child can
always come to the office for assistance with these items.
Additionally, staff members are always looking for students
who may need one of these items and will prompt the
student to go to the office for assistance.
When there is snow on the ground it is our practice to
have outside recess when the temperature is appropriate and the blacktop areas have been
cleared. Students who wear boots and snowsuits are allowed to play in the snow.
These are Fillmore procedures and policies, but they are also generally accepted practices across our district and other districts. Please call me if you have questions. The school
phone number is 391-1740.
Behavior and Recess Concerns
A few isolated incidents have happened recently that, unfortunately, point out the need to
communicate our procedure regarding physical aggression. There will be significant consequences for students who are involved in fighting. Students who initiate a fight will be
given a minimum of a ½ day in-school suspension. Students who do not initiate the fight but continue it may also be given a minimum ½ day in-school suspension. Consequences
may be more severe depending on the circumstances of the incident and the number of times a student has been involved in similar incidents.
We are establishing a Recess Task Force that will meet several times this semester to identify ways we can improve student behavior on the playground. One or two parents will
be members of the task force which will make recommendations on specific actions we can take to ensure students treat each other respectfully at recess.
Please call Ms. Townsell or me if you have any suggestions.

We will be moving into volleyball skills and jumping rope. Since it is Heart Month I will hold Jump Rope for Heart from the middle of Feb till March 14th. Students will also have a chance to Shoot for Heart as well during Wednesdays at recess. With a donation of 10 cents they can shoot 10 free throws. Students interested in participating in Jump Rope for Heart need to see me and I will give them a collections packet. Students that raise money will receive prizes! Dear Fillmore families,
The school bus ride is an extension of the school day
and is subject to all school policies and procedures. If
a student demonstrates inappropriate behavior on the
bus, there will be a bus referral written by the driver or a teacher.
Bus consequences are as follows:
1st referral= Warning and discussion with student
2nd referral= 1 day suspension from the bus
3rd referral= 3 day suspension from the bus
4th referral= 5 day suspension from the bus
5th referral= Off the bus for the remainder of the year
When a student receives a bus referral, parents will be notified by
telephone and written notice will be sent home.
Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from
school for their children during the suspension period.

Morning Drop off Procedure:
There have been some issues in the mornings with students being
dropped off in the crosswalk area. It can cause safety issues as
well as slowing down the flow of traffic.
Please make sure students are being dropped off
in the drop off lane.
Fillmore’s Anti-Bullying Rules:
1. We will not bully others.
2. We will help students who are bullied.
3. We will include others who are left out.
4. If we know someone is being bullied,
we will tell an adult at home and an adult
at school and expect them to do
something about it.

Random Acts of Kindness
February 11th-15th
We will be celebrating “random acts of kindness at Fillmore school the week of February 11th-15th. What a great way to get motivated for Valentine’s Day, a holiday to express love and caring for others.
Remember: You feel good when you make other people feel good!
Here are some ideas of acts of kindness that you can do as a family:
. Cook a meal for someone . Donate blood at the next blood drive or at your local blood bank. . Collect canned food for a food bank . Let someone go ahead of you in line. . Donate used books to a library. . Share the gift of music with the elderly, they don’t get a lot of visitors after the holidays! . Hold the door open for someone. . Give someone a hug. . Adopt a soldier. . Pick up trash. Clean up your toys. . Write a thank you note to your local Police and Fire Department.
For more ideas go to www.randomactsofkindness.org

What I do at Fillmore: I started at
Fillmore this school year as a Para-
educator and work primarily with Mrs.
Butler and Mrs. Leik.
Family /Pets: I have an Arabian horse named Pegasus, a black lab mix named Beau and a Guinea pig named Dora.
What I enjoy most about working at Fillmore: I enjoy seeing students become interested in something they are
learning in school and seeing them excited about succeeding at school. I really appreciate that all the teachers
and staff at Fillmore have been very welcoming!
Things I like to do in my time off: Spend time with my animals, read, watch movies and detective shows, go on
walks, play bells in the hand choir at my church, listen to music.
Favorite foods: Thai and Italian
Role model: I don’t have one primary role model, I like reading about people who have dedicated much of their
lives to helping make the world a better, more compassionate place and also about scientists and their discoveries.
The cartoon character I can most relate to: Linus Van Pelt from “Peanuts” or Velma from “Scooby Doo”
