The Five Themes of Geography
Location- “How do I get there?”
• Absolute Location- exact place on Earth (Coordinate or address)
• Relative Location- Where something is located in relation to something else
“Sugar Land is southwest of Houston.” 15 East St Chicago, IL
Place
• “What is it like there?”• Physical Place- characteristics such as,
mountains, rivers, soil type…• Human Place- characteristic derived from
humans changing the environment
Human- Environment Interaction
•“How do people relate to the land?”•Humans adapt, modify and depend
Think-Pair-Share
• How do people…• Modify the environment to meet their needs?
• Adapt to the environment?
• Rely on the environment?
Movement• “How people, goods, services, and ideas move
into and out of a place?”• Interdependence- we rely on each other for
everything
How is this picture an example of movement?
Region
• “Geographers invent regions to determine how places are connected to one another”• Three Types are
• Formal• Functional• Perceptual
Five Themes of Geography Notes
1. LocationAbsolute Location- exact place on Earth
Relative Location- A place in relation to another place
2. Place- describes the physical and human characteristics
3. HEI- explains how humans and the environment adapt, modify and depend on each other
4. Movement- How people, goods, services, and ideas move into and out of a place?• Interdependence- we rely on each other for everything
5. Region- How the world is divided
Regions of the earth
share common physical and human geographic characteristics.
Think about…..
Why do they have the names that they do?
World Regions
East Asia
South Asia
SW Asia
SE Asia
Oceania
Africa
South America
Central America
North America
Europe
Why is this region called the rust belt?
Regions make the study of geography more manageable
• The world is also divided into regions based on certain human characteristics-such as the way people are governed or the kind of language they speak.
• The world is often divided into regions or areas, based on certain physical features- land-type or plant and animal life.
One place can be part of several different regions.
Texas, US, and World regions
Formal Regions
•Formal regions are based on some common feature such as climate, cultural factors, economics, or landforms.
The Corn Belt
Where Islam dominates
A countries development is an example of formal regions.
Red=DevelopingPurple= Developed
Analyze the map above. What conclusion can be made regarding the development of the world?
Functional Region• A region organized around a set of interactions and
connections between places.
Houston metropolitan area
CFISD attendance area
Perceptual
• What is someone's perception?
• What are people’s perceptions of Texas?
Perceptual regions exist in people’s minds.
