Travelling across the country and abroad for promotional trips, we have a hidden motive. When Ms.Tulsi Bhatia (Dean of GSFS) and I used to return from such visits, GSIS students and Faculty members used to ask us how we looked so fresh and charged in spite of a very hectic schedule.

Well, the credit goes to you and only you – our Old Shepherdians. Your visits, letters, your messages rekindle our faith in ourselves, our profession and I am often reminded of this poem which I adore:

Beautiful Memories… Slow down long enough today to recall a beautiful memory of someone special who inspired you, shared with you, and went an extra mile for you. Let the warm memories of an old friend, a teacher, or a beloved family member lift your spirit, and close the door on negative thinking. Such warm memories will renew you hope and make your whole day more beautiful! - “Beautiful Memories,” written by Bobette Bryan, 2002

Dear friends, we are a 31 year old residential school. Let’s join our hearts and hands and make great Reunions happen. I am delighted to inform you that this year one of the initial batches of GSPS (thanks to Kushallappa – Roll No.62), initiated ”Back 2 Roots” from 17th to 19th April 2009. It was a mind blowing experience. In August 1st week, 2008, the 2007 batch came to the school, thanks to Vikrant Shinde’s efforts. We know that you meet in different places in small groups at different times of the year. We are in the process of updating our OSA online. Please help us by sending in your e-mails addresses (batch wise or otherwise), photographs and loads of information about you, family and friends.

Let’s get moving and create a great and rejuvenated OSA.

With love and best wishes,

Anila MathewOSA Coordinator

Speech by Kushalappa

Respected Sir, Madam, our beloved teachers, brothers & sisters of this great institution,

Good morning.I stand with great pride and humility to formally announce the beginning of BACK 2 ROOTS.

BACK 2 ROOTS was designed in such a way that once in a year we would come to Ooty and relive our days spent in Ooty. Two years back the four of us Anil Devaraj, Leena Geroge, Dharanikala and I came here on a trip and spent time together.

We sought an appointment with Sir to have lunch in the campus and interact with a few teachers who had taught us. The scheduled time was 12:30 p.m. The time we spent with Sir and Madam was over 8 hours. I must add we left with lot of mixed reactions. That was the greatest time we ever had with them over the years we knew them. That gave me an idea to have it as an annual function. The day which was thought of was April 20th or the closest Saturday to that day. Can anyone guess why this day... Yes it is our dearest Madam’s birthday.

The journey of BACK 2 ROOTS has been a really long mission of mine. I always wanted someday that we all come back to “Home away from Home”. The journey has not been easy. It has been really tough. It has been a drain mentally, physically and financially too. I over the years reached out to this community over the phone, e-mails and meetings in person. Did I enjoy it, well definitely yes but I have met a few characters too. This mission I would dedicate to my dearest father who taught me the simple joys of life. Thank you, I love and miss you my dearest Papa.

Dear Sir and Madam,

Very happy to state that the BACK 2 ROOTS – 2009 was mind blowing. I take this opportunity to thank all the teachers and expecting their blessings for my future guidance.

A rare occasion to see my old friends together is memorable.

Camp fire followed by dinner was also excellent.

I remembered all the incidents while I was studying in the renowned school. It will be remembered for ever.

Convey my regards to all.

Thanking you,Yours obediently,San Rose Venugopal e-mail: [email protected]

After school I went to Bombay and studied in SNDT College. I applied for my Bachelors’ in Art and studied sculpture in JJ School of Arts. The year I graduated, I was married off, as we came from a traditional muslim family and it was unheard of that a girl should have a career. Well, got busy being a wife and never got time for my talent. Kids came, grew up and went off to Dubai. I had all the time, so I started designing stages for events. I went to Bombay and worked with Popcorn and realized I was good at designing boats and did that for a year. I came to Pune on a holiday to visit family friend and liked it and opened my first restaurant with a family friend who is now my business partner. I came from Hyderabad, so that I would do some thing different and on the lines of the by gone era of the Nizam and its glory. When you visit Koyla, you see Hyderabad in its glory and can read about where to shop and which monuments to see. The food is authentic from the recipes of the old families of Hyderabad and those of the Nizam. I learnt each and everyone of them and cooked in the restaurant for 6 months. People liked the concept and we got a chance to open a chain there after. I also teach specialized Hyderabad cooking to cadets who want to become chefs on a ship in the merchant navy for the training ship Rehman. I have two grown up children, my daughter Shaista who is 18 and doing dentistry and my son Naef who is training to be a cricketer and plays county cricket in London and just played for Andhra Pradesh vs Karnataka representing under 15. I do want to open more restaurants in India and abroad.

Adieu, Dear Teacher...... We Will Miss You!

As she packs her bags, preparing to leave what has been her home for the past 11 years, we hope Ms. Sajani realises that she will be leaving a vacuum that is difficult to fill. She has touched many lives with her utter simplicity, gentleness and her strong convictions. Never one to flow with the tide when it came to speaking her mind, her students and their well - being have been the only things that have driven her. A “guru” in the truest sense of the word – they don’t make them in her mould any more.

A few thoughts from a cross section of people whom she has unwittingly endeared herself to….

Tears, bursts of joy, loads of paper correction and splitting headaches! These are the things that best describe our dear Sajani Miss. She has had no limits to her patience, especially in our case, where her untiring corrections will always be there, irrespective of how many times we make the same mistake. She has always undermined herself in terms of her abilities but in fact her simple and down – to – earth qualities have been things that we students looked up to. Wherever she may go, she will always be present with us to give us the strength and motivational support that we will need in the future. May your life be filled with happiness, miss.

Like many people say…. why is it easy to say hello and so difficult to say good bye? My greatest support during the dusk of my teenage years was none other than my very own class teacher, Sajani Miss. She taught me to face life’s most painful lessons and at the end of it all she was always supportive in whatever I did. The best part about her was that she taught with her heart and mind, with her passion to teach. You will be missed dearly miss and please never forget your IB batch of 2007 – 2009.

Jason Patrick

‘Mother’ is the word that best describes Sajani Miss. She is a friend and guide who was always there with me on my escort trips to Mumbai. This is how she and I came close. She is a balmy individual who always guided me, protected me and made sure that I was always fine and comfortable during the trips. I have known her since I was six years old and in the recent years I have noticed that she is also very emotional.

Abhishek Chablani

P.S. ‘Thank you for everything and may only good happen to you and your mother’.

As a teacher, Sajani Miss is really good. When you go to her, you will get solutions to your problems, for sure. She has always played a dual role of a teacher and a mother in class. I think that she should not be so selflessly giving.

I have had her as a class teacher for 2 years. From the first day itself, she had been very helpful. She helped me adjust here and made my stay very comfortable. I was always amazed by her vast knowledge in English. When I joined this school, I was not so great at English but thanks to her that I know more that what I did… She is one person who is always ready to learn something new everyday whether it is using technology for her presentations or reading another book. Though she is always busy with corrections, she always has time for her students. They are her priority, after her mother. Just few words for her –

“Sometimes missing someone is more precious than being together, because we miss only those whom we never want to miss from our lives”.

Bindiya

As we were walking towards the academic block for my demo session after the interview, my misgivings prevented me from listening to everything my mother and she were talking about. However a few soft words that she uttered ‘ammaykku shawl veno’, and the concern that she showed to my mother will keep resounding in my ears, forever. She had simply introduced herself as Sajani and spoken to my mother in Malayalam. She was leading us towards the classrooms while the pinioning gust seemed to be forcing us back.

Today, as I reflect on that day, I realize that I have indeed travelled quite a long distance through academic work, private pains and uncertainties. I realize that I have walked without stumbling because of this unassuming lady who means more to me than a friend or a teacher.

This is to tell a person I respect, admire and love that I owe her my career and passion for teaching.

Deepa Das (Department of English)

Thank you Ms. Sajani I’ve loved knowing you

My father gave me the following advice way back in 1983..

“When something is prompted by your conviction, you can certainly say it”. From this I surmised that we must speak or write about people (discretion being paramount of course) as our conscience prompts. To stifle the voice of conscience and say things against the dictates of one’s conscience either due to misguided public spirit or fear or favour of public opinion or one’s own personal and selfish motives is a heinous sin.

I have taken as my guide the spirit of this very sagacious advice in writing the following short note to Ms. Sajani.

In my two years of teaching pupils at Good Shepherd International School, I positively affirm that Ms. K. Sajani is one of the best English teachers, I have known, over a little more than a quarter of a century spent in teaching and research.

It is not the knowledge she has – it is abundant enough, God knows. Again it is not a matter of knowing Shakespeare’s plays by heart or quoting Bacon or Chesterton or Milton or Virgil –or what have you.

Indeed it is the overwhelming kindness, the extraordinary patience and the gentleness this lovable teacher exudes that has endeared her over the years to all those who have come in contact with her.

A great poet has said that such a person is rarely to be found and if located would definitely be one of God’s elect.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”.Matthew 18:20

THANK YOU Ms. SAJANI, I’VE LEARNT A LOT FROM YOU, AND ABOVE ALL I’VE LOVED KNOWING YOU.Mukkadap Sandeep Suresh Rau (Department of English )

From small beginnings come great things. This saying can be aptly used when we talk about wonderful people like Ms K. S. Sajani.

Let’s have it from her what she thinks of her life in G.S.I.S…….

“Good Shepherd” – The first thought that crosses your mind when you hear the two words?

Children. My life here has been more or less about them.

Please share your experience as the Summer House mistress.

The first year when I got the post was indeed very lucky for us, because we got the Cock – House breaking the eight - year tradition of Autumn House. The major fields in which we won trophies / laurels were music, sports and March Past. Even when we lost, we made it a point that the losing was unexpected. In short, the whole experience was memorable.

14 years is a long time – how has it helped you to grow as an individual and as an English teacher?

Individually, this school has helped me to build a lot of relationships, particularly with students. As an English teacher, the experiences of teaching the IB Board was a big opportunity. I became the examiner for ICSE, ISC and IB and have also prepared the students for all board examinations.

What are the feelings that come to your heart now when you are leaving your family of Good Shepherd?

There are mixed feelings, but I will surely miss my family of G.S.I.S extremely. It has truly been a home away from home for me.

What advice would you like to give the members of G.S.I.S family?

Be straight – forward and trust – worthy.

Dear Anila Miss & Kalyan Sir,

I have been trying to write for quite some time now, but unfortunately never really got around doing it. Have been reading all the invitation letters and Founder’s Day letters, but again never really got a chance to write back.

Reading all these letters really makes me want to come and visit the school, I have been wanting to do that for ages, but the circumstances are such that I haven’t quite been able to make it, probably won’t be able to make it for some more years.

Life has moved really fast ever since I have stepped out of Good Shepherd. A LOT has happened between then and now. Lost few people in life, came across few new people, lived through death of friends and rejoiced at batch mates’ marriages. Marriages! God, I already feel I’m so old!

As usual life has been quite full of ups and downs. Me, Prateek Rungta and Amit Behera got together and lived in Delhi after 10th and finished our 11th and 12th. I don’t know if you remember, but we did give

Kalyan Sir a call sometime during those two years. Delhi was fun, hard and full of experiences. We went there with the intention to compete and make ourselves eligible to get through IIT. IIT was the pinnacle of achievement for us back then. But as we went through the two years, it became constantly clear how IIT wasn’t for me. I know many people will call it incompetence I call it difference. It became clear I had to be someone different to be in IIT. It wasn’t just about studying hard it was something else that I clearly didn’t have. But anyway, I have up on that and somewhere along these confusions about what I want to do; I messed up my 12th standard marks. After that, dropped a year and amongst the constant bickering from family and relatives, I planned a career out. Got an offer from Newcastle University, and after explaining to them that the main cause of my poor overall 12th standard marks was Chemistry, which was useless to me in Computers, they were kind enough to offer me a 3000 pounds scholarship for each year. Since then, there has been no looking back. I slogged two years doing part-time jobs, studies and every possible project that came my way. Second year was particularly significant. Cause by then, I knew a lot of people in the city, everybody at my work knew me, I was doing five projects at the same time, and was also made the student representative for two departments in my University. I got the chance to attend staff-student councils and the University’s Board of Studies. Just like old times’ Prefects Council meetings! And oh ya, also spent three months teaching Maths in a government school, in one of the not-so-money-laden areas of Newcastle.

After those two very long years, I was offered a student placement from Fujitsu, where I am currently. The placement is for a year and I am almost at the end of it. It’s been fun and educative. The experience of working full time in a big company is priceless.

But its needless to say Good Shepherd is still a big part of my life. Not just mine but every other shepherdian I know. We never let a chance go by to remind ourselves, and everyone else willing to listen to us, about our “adventures” of Good Shepherd. And its safe to say our listeners do get amused! I don’t think its possible to be who I am without being part of the Shepherdian culture. Especially considering the friends that we made.

There are few people in UK from my batch. I am even meeting few of them in two weeks time. Ashraf, Sourima Biswas, Jenny John, Umang. We are all meeting up in Manchester. It should be fun!

Hopefully next time I am in India, I should be able to make a trip to the school. Its sad most of my teachers would have left by then. But anyways, few of us will make a plan and pay a visit surely. Make sure you both don’t grow old and retire by then!

Simply put, the mix was the bomb! Definitely, without a doubt, The Sports Bar Trocadero London was stimulated with excitement. It roared with laughter as everyone chanted old stories and jokes about our tenure at Good Shepherd International School. The days when we all departed from our dormitory to catch our flights back home was nothing unusual for a period of a month or so, but then came a realization, when we didn’t return to our Alma Master for the beginning of a new academic year. We confronted the fact that we will never go back and live the same life. All my folks were happy to come out of the school and were excited and looking forward to a new and a more adventurous life outside the school boundary, as we did now. But the heart always ached whenever we thought about the good old school days.

Class of 2007, Reunion 2 day event18th October, 2007 to 20th October, 2007

Page 14: THE FLOCKshepherdian.com/pdf/The Flock_Book_2008.pdf · Email: thomasjr@jirah.co.in Mobile: +919845348474 Secretary Mrs. Julie Thomas Pradeesh Good Shepherd International School Fernhill

So, 5 months passed and we all started a new journey, but soon we started missing our school friends and we thought of meeting up, conventionally known as a reunion, get-to-gether. So here we were at the trotakero, where everyone washed away their difference and started to talk. To mention: Niket Biyani going up and talking amicably to Chaitali Parmar and Prina Patel, which he never contemplated of doing so in school.

But truly, the Mix was an excellent ice breaker to start off our two days long list of activities. It was certainly sensational to see and to socialize with so many old friends. Everyone seemed genuinely excited as they scampered about the Sports Bar hugging and embracing each other. Flashes from cameras could have been seen all evening; even Amil Shahid pulled out his camera phone and started clicking away. Avinash

Hotchandani, the only person who seemed to have read and followed the request of the emails brought the Shepherdian book, which was circulated throughout, as everyone pointed out old high school, and middle school pictures and laughed at how innocently we used to pose 3 to 4 years back.

As the night rolled out, and we continued our get-together by hitting the club in the night and then sitting in Trafalgar Square and reminiscing the school days. The laughter continued the whole night and the fact that it was early morning 5 ‘O’ clock hit us because of the cold wave that went past the city of London. We all made our way back and thought of meeting the next day for lunch as every one had to head back in the evening to their colleges. But, interestingly few of them forgot their responsibilities and overslept, which resulted in people like Farhan Jadwet, Vinay Malagi, Jhanvi Parmar and Paraj Shah missing their train the next day.

Reunion was fun, but it was something different as few of us actually got a chance to get to know each other better. Re-union is a tradition, which every single school graduate dreams of because it is the only chance where he/she can meet all their classmates and friends together. The 2007 batch like any other batch were closely bound, but are also determined to keep the bond closely fixed throughout their lives and build on the Alumni which has been a tradition of our Alma Mater for 30 Long Years now.

Our Pilots meeting Dr. Thomas in Mumbai

Hello,

How are you? How is Sheila Miss and everyone else? I am doing my Computer Engineering at Purdue. Things were a little hard with me in the beginning but now everything is fine. I miss school a lot and all the teachers. I planned to visit school last summer but I got an internship at Lanco Global Systems in India. I promised Sajani Miss that I would come and visit. Tell her that I am really sorry for that. This summer I think I may get an internship with Microsoft or Dell. I have an interview in March. If I come to India I will visit school this time. There was not a day that I did not think about school after I left it. I miss all of you. Convey my regards to all my teachers.

Dearest Sir & Madam,

Greetings to you.

On the very outset let me thank you for the wonderful time you gave us on our trip “ Back 2 Roots”. Very truthful this was the best trip we had undertaken in our lives so far and probably we would never get one like this again. We had marked only 1½ hours for the meeting and seeing our campus. But we spent 6½ hours and we relived every minute with fond memories. As you are aware Anil Devaraj (1st School Captain) & Dharani Kala (Roopa & Lakshmi’s- Sister) were revisiting the school after nearly 24 years for Leena George (10 years) and me (after 3 years) it brought a lot of nostalgic moments, trust each one of us had mixed reactions while entering the campus and our eyes filled with tears as we left our beautiful campus. It was truly one great experience of Home away from home.

Since I am aware this letter is to be published in “The Flock”. I write a small note to the beloved people who have touched my heart in anyway during my tenure in school. I work for Zee News Limited. I handle the Sales. I am in charge of Tamilnadu & Kerala. My wife Anjana is a Montessori teacher. We have a son Dhruv. He goes to school where his mother teaches. We are in Chennai. Our Parents are in Coorg and they manage the plantations and other establishments. Muthamma (summer) is in Bangalore and her husbamd Arun Acharya runs his own software company. They are blessed with a baby girl Amara. Ponamma (winter) is in Canada and her husband is Rajat Tanwar. He is an architect. They have two children Arjun & Gauri.

Sir and Madam, if Sri Dhirubhai Ambani is considered as the “Father of Modern Industrialization” of India, with no second thought you can be called “Father of Modern Education” in India. These are no words of flattery. No person accomplished so much in such a short time. Sir, you have reached heights which would take several decades even to come close to it. We bow with total reverence on this achievement. We are lucky to be a part of this great legacy. None can contradict this statement of mine.

With everlasting regards and salutations to my alma mater, my dearest teachers and to you Sir and Madam

Your ever loving Student

Back to Roots

So was christened the reunion of the Alumni of the Good Shepherd International School, the

erstwhile Good Shepherd Public School on 18th April 2009 at the Fernhill Campus and also of

the pre-eminent faculty that was associated with the institution during her formative years.

`Back to Roots’ is a strong metaphor, which, among many other literary interpretations and

implications, means a retrospective encounter with the past in order to elicit a better, proper,

real and a better, proper, real and wholesome perspective of the ‘life’ lived then, while history

was in the making. The revelation of the past at present is much more lucid and candid than when the present

is ‘present’. The repercussions and the consequences of the past, when the seed was sown, when the seed

sprouted, took roots and became a sapling; when the fledgeling grew into a tree, strong, vibrant, as a tree

planted beside the still waters; as the roots grew deeper and deeper, nourished by the values inherent in a

good soil and finally become a gigantic Oak or Cedar, with branches spreading forth in all directions,

producing abundant fruits amidst vernal foliage as it is today. The little ones that left the portals of this

institution, became global citizens, enriched in the best universities in the world; to mention a few – at Harvard,

at Stanford, at the Chicago Institute of Technology, at the London School of Economics, at Delaware, at

Glasgow, as member in the British Psychological Society, at the London University’s Kings College and the

Imperial College, many of whom have completed their doctoral dissertations and have obtained post doctoral

fellowships, at the Indian Institutes of Technology and are employed as top level executives in multinational

concern. They youngest Director of a multinational software company is one of our Alumni. It is appropriate

to give the roots its due recognition, for the roots support, sustain and nourish the tree. The roots have to be

strong; must be made strong; and have to be kept strong. Be it the primary-root; or the secondary root; or the

tertiary root; each one has to be maintained so that the tree keeps growing and continues to produce fruit.

The reunion was made possible by the untiring efforts of Mr. K A Kushalappa (1987), a journalist and an editor

by profession, based in Chennai. Due to pressing assignments of the alumni, all the members were not able

to attend, though the response was quite encouraging. A few of the first few batches were present, but most of

them were from the batches between 1985 and 1995. Academic growth and diversification occurred and

became obviously effectual during the two decades from 1985 to 2005 and now the system is very well rooted

and self-sustaining.

The clearer perspectives of the day you shall find gleaming in the frozen stills of the first among the many to

come that will constitute the legacy to the posterity and the future.

Mr. C. Victor Selwin
