Dear Friends,

As we make our holiday plans and enter into the joyful giving season, it’s hard to look back on the devastation brought by the Arkansas flood just a few months ago. So much loss, and for some, recovery is still in the distant future. Animals, of course, are among the worst to suffer in disasters and this one was no exception. Many were separated from their homes and families, while rescues scrambled to save what they could. Fortunately, the spirit of generosity and caring—which we always see around the holiday season—came early.

Though our shelter and animals were spared damage from the disaster, our community was in deep need. So we organized foster homes to help neighbors with temporary housing for their pets. One special foster was Carolyn Vahjen who took in Goldie, a black German Shepherd, from a man who had lost his home and farm. When he realized it would be more than a year before he could rebuild, he surrendered Goldie to HSPC. To add to her misfortune, Goldie was suffering from a very weak heart due to advanced heartworm disease. Her treatment would be compli-cated and slow, but Carolyn remained her foster and patiently worked with us to save Goldie. But there was more work to do…

Flood of Kindness (Continued from Page 1)

In the meantime, Best Friends Animal Society (our partner on the West Coast) connected us with another charitable organization called Gleaning for the World (on the East Coast) that assembled a large shipment of nonperishable pet supplies for Arkansas. Thus a huge collaborative effort began. Paws and Claws, a small rescue in McGehee—along with the Desha County Office of Emergency Manage-ment—offered a large warehouse for storage and distribu-tion of supplies to the areas hardest hit, which included Pendleton. We brought supplies back with us to Pulaski County as well, to accommodate rescues and citizens with pets affected north of us.

It is hard to measure the impact of these gifts distributed to so many across our state, but the effort was well worth it. The remaining items no longer needed in McGehee were moved on to another state experiencing the same problems after a recent hurricane.

As for Goldie, her bond with Carolyn grows as her heart heals. In the meantime, she has been officially adopted by her devoted foster.

So to all of you that support our mission of rescue (and all the directions it takes us), we wish you a wonderful Holiday Season and truly hope that kindness and compassion flood your lives in the New Year!

On behalf of the Board of Directors,

Debbie Howell

HSPC Board President

Holiday Gifts for Your Neighbors, Friends & Family Embrace the challenge of gift-giving to those on your list that need nothing but to know that you thought of them. Here are ways to honor them through gifts that provide support for HSPC animals. THE GIVING TREE Drop by the shelter to see our beautiful Giving Tree! It’s decorated with lovely framed photographs of some of our special-needs shelter animals. You can purchase one of these beautiful cards (suitable for mailing or to give as a gift) – plus sponsor the featured animal – for a minimum dona-tion of $15. MAILED HOLIDAY CARDS Make a donation in honor of a person or pet, and we’ll mail out a lovely holiday card acknowledging your kind gift. You can donate from our website, mail in a check, or call or drop by the shelter. Just provide the name of the honoree and the address to which we should mail the holiday card. Please be sure to specify “Holiday Card”. LEGACY SIDEWALK Purchase a memorial or honorarium brick for $100 to be placed in our Legacy Sidewalk at the front of the HSPC shelter. HSPC Distributes Large Shipment of Donated Pet Food to Other Arkansas Charities

Two weeks after receiving thousands of nonperishable pet items for distri-bution to flood victims from Gleaning for the World in West Virginia, HSPC received yet another gift. A local pet food manufacturer offered a large truckload of cat and dog food to HSPC for distribution to other charities in need.

HSPC, in conjunction with the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, distributed 40,000 pounds of pet food to 27 animal rescues and shelters, 7 food banks and 2 homeless providers! We greatly appreciate our anonymous donor for this wonderful gift! We are also very grateful to the AHRA volun-teers and the HSPC volunteers and staff. We could not have pulled this off without the use of the warehouse at the Clinton International Airport and the forklift provided by Little Rock Animal Services.

Pet Photos with Santa Saturday December 7 12pm–4pm Sunday December 8 12pm–4pm The Good Earth Garden Center 15601 Cantrell Road, Little Rock Prices start at $15 for a 5”x7”.

Photos can be of pets, people or both–with or without Santa. There may be a surprise visit by local celebrity Herself On A Shelf

Holiday & Winter Survival Guide for Pets & Their People

THE BIG 5 HOLIDAY DANGERS * 1) Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! 2) Tree preservatives 3) Poinsettias 4) Medications 5) Alcohol * In order of call volume reported by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center

KEEP THESE MEDICATIONS LOCKED AWAY! Medications that contain Pseudoephedrine or Dextromethorphan NSAIDs, Ibuprofen, antibiotics, cough drops, and eye drops

OTHER HOLIDAY & WINTER TIPS Anchor trees securely. Climbing cats and dogs with wagging tails can knock over your tree. Hang breakable, glass ornaments well out of reach. The small glass and metal fastenings can be stepped on or even swallowed by your pet. Keep tinsel, ribbons and garland out of pets’ reach, especially cats that are intrigued by them. These can become lodged in their intestines, cause obstructions and lead to surgery or death. Clean up pine needles frequently. They can be toxic when eaten by your pet. Stagnant tree water can contain bacteria, which may lead to vomiting and diarrhea if ingested. Keep lights and extension cords safely secured or covered to deter chewing, which can lead to electric shock or even electrocution. Candles are a fire hazard if knocked over by an exuberant pet, and the fumes can be harmful to birds. Exposure to liquid potpourri and sachets can cause skin or oral damage to your pet and may cause illness or death. Cats can get frostbite. Many seek warmth by crawling into car engines, which can be dangerous or fatal. Always bang on your vehicle’s hood before starting your engine!

If dogs are kept outside, they should have a draft-free shelter large enough to stand and turn around in, yet small enough to retain body heat. Use a layer of straw (not hay) or other bedding material for insulation. After letting your pet outside to go potty, be sure to wipe their paws. Tender pads can be injured from salts and other ice-melting chemicals. Outdoor animals typically need more calories in the winter to allow their body to produce body heat.

HAZARDOUS PLANTS Lilies can be deadly to cats! Mistletoe (especially the berries) is highly toxic and can cause fatal heart problems. Poinsettia, Christmas Cactus, Holly, English Ivy, Amaryllis, and Hibiscus can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and lethargy.

GOODIES THAT ARE BADDIES FOR PETS Wrapped gifts containing food Uncooked poultry, bread dough, and fruitcake Salt in ice melt, homemade play dough, salt-dough ornaments, and Himalayan salt lamps Snow globes (contain ethylene glycol)

We’re counting on you to keep us safe!

This spotlight honors two very important volunteers who may play many other roles, but the

most important of all is working with HSPC animals in the shelter to socialize them and ulti-

mately connect them with their new potential adopters!

Nancy Watkins has been working in the dog park three to four days a

week in all kinds of weather with our large dogs for 3 ½ years. Nancy

used to drop off treats and food until one day she went through the

double doors, noticed their precious eyes looking back at her in the

kennels, and the epiphany happened! She has had many success sto-

ries, but she continues to accept new challenges. “I volunteer because

I adore these innocent creatures and want to do whatever I can to

make their lives easier while at the shelter.” – Nancy Watkins

Judy Miller has been volunteering in our cat room on Sundays since 2002. Accord-

ing to Judy, going to the shelter and working with the cats is so different from her

job (which can be stressful at times). She loves working with the cats, cat volun-

teers, cat lovers and even occasionally groups of visiting children curious about

cats. She loves meeting people and helping them find the right match! Once she

worked with a family who were interested in adopting two of three kittens. When

they couldn’t choose, she suggested they take all three and they did! Judy has also

been a constant presence as head of our registration team at our annual fundrais-

er, Reigning Cats & Dogs.
