The Forest Biodiversity Programme METSO
2008 –2016

Zonation
• The Zonation analytical tool will be utilised in the METSO Programme to help resolve which forest areas are the most suitable for the measures to preserve biodiversity
• Zonation, devised by Professor Atte Moilanen from the University of Helsinki, has already been applied in about 20 conservation projects around the world– Madagascar: expansion of protected areas
– England: planning the conservation of butterfly habitats
– Australia: assessments of the planned expansion of suburbs
• Used in Finland by Metsähallitus e.g. for the “10,000 ha” scheme of the METSO Programme

Training of professional foresters
Persons working in forest and environmental organisations must have sufficient knowledge of the actions to enhance forest biodiversity and the ecological foundations of the programme
• Some 2000 professional foresters have been trained on METSO Programme in 2009

Research and monitoring under METSO (1)• One of the 14 measures of the METSO Programme is
concerned with monitoring the ecological, economic and social impacts of the programme
• The main responsibility for the monitoring lies with the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) and Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE)
• Research and development are carried out under four programmes:
1. Metla research projects: monitoring of the impacts of the METSO Programme 2008-2016, support for decisions contributing to forest biodiversity and inventories, monitoring of natural forest biodiversity
2. Research programme on deficiently known and threatened forest species 2009-2016 (PUTTE), financed by the Ministry of the Environment
Ministry of the Environment / Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry20105
Research and monitoring under METSO (2)
3. Research on commercial forests, supported by the joint research funds of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
4. Eight national projects concerning nature management of commercial forests were launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the beginning of 2010
