It is a responsibility that you should take to be kind and compassionate to everyone you meet. Education Week Today marks the beginning of Education Week. This year the theme for Education Week is:

Every student, every voice

At the centre of this theme is the celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system and teachers at Fred-erickton Public School gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens. Macleay Athletics Carnival The Macleay Athletics Carnival was held last Friday, 2nd August. Our students demonstrated great 4B behaviours and great sportsmanship for the day. Learning Dispositions At FPS we have identified 8 Learning Dispositions which we believe every student needs to know and understand, practice and embed, to assist them in their learning journey. We have already introduced 6 of the 8 dispositions which have included: Resilient, Persistent. In-spired, Collaborative, Creative and Reflective. This term our focus is Compassionate. Bella Williams 4/5V tells me that compassionate means: “where you are kind to others and it is something that you should always do. News from 1/2H & 1/2R This week we celebrate Education Week and we will be performing the song We Belong at the morning Edu-cation Week assembly on Friday. After the assembly parents are invited to visit the classrooms. This week we are reading the text Sophie Scott Goes South by the author Alison Lester. The text is the diary of nine year old Sophie who goes to Ant-arctica with her dad, the ship's cap-tain. Sophie sees icebergs, seals and whales and even becomes stranded in a blizzard. Next week we are reading the text titled Tropical Terry by Jarvis. This story discusses how Terry the tropical fish feels dull compared to the other dazzling tropical fish. The mes-sage is how we need to love our own scales and take pride in what makes us different. Over the next fortnight we will be practising measuring the weight of objects (mass) and revising addition and subtraction strategies. Just a reminder that 1/2H has library on Tuesday and 1/2R has library on Wednesday. This week the students are looking forward to using the Bluebots and doing some robotic programming. It is very exciting and we encourage par-ents to discuss this learning with their child. The pupils are thoroughly enjoying the learning in Science about habitats and the types of plants and animals that live within certain habitats. We en-courage parents to have a discussion with their child about the different types of habitats in the world, for ex-ample desert and the meaning of biome.

The students in 1/2R only are asked to send in a pair of tights, shorts, tracksuit pants or jeans that are plain black in col-our. Please send in as soon as possible labelled with your child's name. This is the only costuming item they will need for Fredo Spectacular being held at the end of the term. Thankyou to 1/2R students for sending in a plain white t-shirt. The Star Badge students immensely en-joyed the Star Badge treat last Thursday at the Riverside Park. It is a very popular Star Badge reward activity amongst the stu-dents. HAPPY EDUCATION WEEK. Mrs Henderson & Mrs Rose News from Kindergarten Thank you to those parents who attended

the Parent/Teacher Interviews last week.

If anyone has further questions or missed

the afternoon to please contact the office

to organise an appointment.

This term in science we are learning about

the weather and we have started our next

Highway Heroes unit—Travelling the Emo-

tional Highway.

Kindergarten library is Tuesdays after

lunch.

Starting last week students brought home

a Parent Assisted Immersive Reader. Your

child will have this reader in their pouch

for 2 weeks and it is intended that you

read this book with your child so that you

can ask them questions from the reader.

You can work on the book over the 2

weeks—it does not need to be completed

in one night. If you would like your child

to complete the supporting worksheets

they will be provided. If you have any

questions please send a note or call the

office.

Senior Excursion to Morisset We have our numbers and our Senior Excursion is set for 21st October to 25th October 2019 Please make sure that payment has been paid in full by 14th October 2019. In past years parents who haven’t paid the full amount by the due date ensured the school that the full payment would still be made after the event. Unfortunately some parents have not fulfilled their commitment so therefore due to that if your child has not paid the full amount by the due date they will not be participating in this event. You have 10 weeks before this excursion is finalised so please do leave it to the last week to pay the full amount.

Head Lice Its that time of the year when these little critters are out and about—one of our parents have found this treatment to be a success and wanted to share with our families. They purchased it from JB Hair Studio, Smith Street, Kempsey. Head Lice have be-come used to the KP24 and other solutions. If your child has head lice they are to be treated at home before they can return to school. The cost is about $35 but if it works its well worth the cost.

School Photos

Our school photos will be taken next Monday 12th August. Order envelopes went home with last weeks newsletter. Please return by Friday 9th August and please put the correct money in the envelopes and the office will not be able to change any money.

BOOK WEEK PARADE Across Australia, Book Week will be held during Week 5 of this term. The theme for 2019 is Reading is My Super Power. The school has purchased all the books shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Awards as well as some that received an honourable mention. The Children’s Book Council of Australia will announce the winning books on Friday 16th August with Book Week being celebrated in the following week.

The Book Parade will be held at the end of Book Week on Friday morning 23rd August at 9:30am and students may come to school dressed for the parade. As in previous years students will need to carry their chosen book during the parade. Dressing up for the parade doesn’t need to be a difficult or expensive task. The characters in many books are based on ordinary contemporary people who wear clothes like everyday kids. Don’t leave organising your costume until the last day, start to get organised now. As an alternative to a character in a book, you might be able to come up with something really clever that re-flects the theme Reading is My Super Power. If you are still having trouble with ideas please talk to your class-room teacher or come and see me in the library. I am happy to help you select a book and give ideas however I am not able to actually provide a costume. BOOK FAIR The annual Scholastic Book Fair will also be held in the library during Book Week in Week 5. The Book Fair is a wonderful op-portunity for you to promote the importance of reading to your children by purchasing quality and reasonably priced books. The school gets back a percentage of the total value of books sold. The bigger the value, the bigger the percentage and the more books we can choose to keep for the school and all of our students. YEAR 6 DVD As in previous years a DVD will be made to celebrate the time our Year 6 students have been at Fredericton Public School. I thought I would get in early this year and ask that our Year 6 students could start looking for photos to be included in this DVD. What I need is a Kindergarten photo and any other photos which could be funny, embarrassing, any school photos from Kinder to Year 6 that the school might not have etc. I will scan and return the photos to the students ASAP. Please start looking now and send in as soon as you can. Mrs Fitzgerald
