Epiphany – January 6, 2019 The Twelfth Night (Epiphany) also marks a visit to the baby Jesus by

The Magi, (also widely referred to as the three Kings, or Wise Men).

The word 'Epiphany' comes from Greek and means 'manifestation'. It

celebrates 'the revelation of God in his Son as human in Jesus Christ'.

In the West, Christians began celebrating the Epiphany in the 4th

century, associating it with the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus.

According to the Gospel of Matthew, the Magi found baby Jesus by

following a star across the desert to Bethlehem.

The three wise men - named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar -

followed the star of Bethlehem to meet the baby Jesus. According to

Matthew 2:11, the Magi offered gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The gifts were symbolic of the importance of Jesus' birth, the gold

representing his royal standing; frankincense his divine birth; and

myrrh his mortality.

During the medieval period, Christmas was celebrated for the 12 days

from Christmas Eve on December 24, until the Epiphany. Even up until

the 19th century, January 6 was as big a celebration as Christmas Day.

Warm greetings with good wishes to you all!

The joint Charge Conference, among all four churches in Redland area, was held in our Fellowship Hall. We had a chance

to meet the new District Superintendent, Rev. Melissa MacKinnon, who presided over the Conference. Rev. MacKinnon

took over the baton from Rev. Jan Wiley who retired in June. During reports on ministries of churches, I showed a movie

clip from “Shack” and shared briefly what our church has accomplished for the last several years. I did not mean to show

off, but good things need to be shared.

Ed Eliot’s 107th birthday party went really well. Ed was strong

enough to come to the celebration. Thanks to his family, the

worship attendance went over 100 and the food was great. I pray

that all who came to the party would receive the same blessing of

health and longevity from the Lord with which Ed is blessed. UMC

of Yucaipa is the oldest congregation I have ever served. One of

the reasons I say it is because we have a member who is unusually

advanced in age. Who knows? Some of you may be able to break

Ed’s record. Happy Birthday Ed and many more!

At the threshold of the old and New Year, the praise that Charles Wesley wrote strikes a chord,

“O for a thousand tongues to sing,

My great Redeemer’s praise,

The glories of my God and King,

The triumphs of His grace.”

To compare where we are today with the condition of the church four years ago, I cannot help but praise God. I felt a

depressive spirit at the church when my appointment began. Look at all the big capital improvements we have

accomplished, new programs we have created, and new church family members we have added. All these blessings will

help us move forward into the New Year. My pastoral hope and goal is that we as faithful stewards keep building up the

House of Faith, which God has entrusted under our care.

In the coming year, we will continue to strive to make our church more visible in the community and draw more people to

this beautiful faith fellowship. To me, these tasks are more challenging than a physical labor to improve our facilities.

How could we continue to grow? Let me share a few strategies derived from the Great Commission in Matthew 28, which

is perfectly fitting to begin the New Year.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing

them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have

commanded you.”

The first step is “Go.” We need to reach out and make connections to the people in the community. Our church offers

points of connection through worship, fellowship, and outreach programs such as movies and concerts, and many others.

Each of you, also, is a point of contact and represents our church in your personal relationship to others. Utilize your

personal network. The second step is, “Make disciples.” This requires serious effort to invite people you are connected to

and nourish them spiritually so that they may become a committed believer like you. These two uncomplicated steps have

sustained the church of Christ for the last two millennia. The House of Faith is not an exception for her sustenance. As we

diligently follow these two essential steps of disciple making for growth, we will surely thrive.

Wishing you and yours a blessed New Year!
