Recent I
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings to you all,
The middle of the year is here, and we have had a couple of wonderful outings to catch up. More excitingly we have many more planned, so further on in the newsletter you will see plenty of events coming up that you may wish to join.
Thank you for offers of help for the Nuts and Bolts in Feilding on Saturday the 22nd August. There is a small committee who will put together a programme. We will have helpers in the kitchen, and a registration desk. Thank you for your enthusiasm to help with this event. It is a good opportunity to meet other members for around the lower North Island. You never know, you may end up travelling with them on the South Island bus tour later this year. After Nuts and Bolts has finished, those that are interested will have a couple of days to travel home with plenty of fun activities on the way. We will be staying in motels, so it is just our club. More info below. However, you are welcome to just come for the day and return home if you wish.
In July, we will be going out for dinner and having a coffee morning in the Hutt Valley.
Sadly, Claudie Mouzouri’s daughter died during shutdown. Our thoughts are with Claudie and her family.
David Pyle has been in hospital and is now home making good recovery. Eddie Blackwell is making steady progress with his health as well. All the best to both - we hope to see you both back in good health.

JOURNEYS FOR 2020 AND BEYOND
All planned overseas Journeys, inbound and outbound, have been cancelled for 2020. This includes the Global Journey “Follow the Faultline”. We have yet to hear whether the planned visit by FF Albany Club from 23 November will be able to go ahead.
RECENT EVENTS
Coffee Morning at Boulcott Farm Hutt Golf Club There was an air of excitement as 21 Friendship Force members met (physically) for the first time for a number of weeks, early in Level 1 of the Covid-19 Lockdown. The coffee morning at Boulcott Farm Golf Club was very well supported and members enjoyed discussing new plans for the months ahead.
Mystery Car Ramble & Lunch On Friday 26 June a group of 17 trusting members put their lives in Lynnda and Tony’s
hands and braved the Mystery Car Ramble. We met at the Avalon Duck Pond, risked our
luck with a very original game of dice, then climbed into shared cars and headed for our first
mystery stop – Belmont Domain. Here in 2009 the Friendship Force Club of San Francisco
Bay planted a rhododendron, complete with commemorative plaque, in memory of their visit.
In the blink of an eye the rhododendron was stolen, and so was the plaque. The plaque
was discovered soon after and found its way back to our club, but it took until 2020 for a
new rhododendron to suddenly appear, planted in the very same spot as the original! So
we gathered round, admired, replanted the plaque, and promised to visit in November to
discover the colour of its flowers!
Then on to our mystery lunch, at Judgeford Golf Club, Pauatahanui. We lounged, talked and
laughed overlooking the beautiful rolling greens, with a few hardy souls determined to have
their day in spite of the inclement weather, and feasted on delectable lunch offerings.
A lovely way to reconnect and enjoy sharing the spirit of friendship, Wellington Friendship
Force way. Thanks to Lynnda and Tony Bouzaid for organising it.
We gathered in the misty rain Tony’s inventive game of dice
at the Avalon Duck Pond was more about luck than skill!
Tony got stuck in digging the hole John was eager to help
for the replanted plaque
Back to how it was when the We’re just waiting to see the
FF Club of San Francisco first planted it colour of the flowers
And finally a lovely lunch over looking the greens of the
Pauatahanui Golf Club

Boy, what do you write when Heather asks for a "little blurb" to be included in the next FF Newsletter, when you've never written a CV, and all you've done is write a 75 word bio for the "Covid Cancelled Wellington FF Tour to Canada & USA"? Well, here goes……… I am semi-retired after 60+ years working in our 97 year young, 4th generation Family Business. We were originally in the Automotive Parts and Accessory business where we tended to be the "movers and shakers". I was lucky enough to be the first to discover overseas, then import and distribute, safety belts, mag wheels, leather and wooden steering wheels, air horns and quartz halogen bulbs, all standard equipment on many of today's motor vehicles. The company then imported the Plasti-Kote range of aerosol spray paint from USA. This turned out to be the 9th or 10th Brand available in the market at that time. This enabled us to expand into the Paint and Hardware markets. Within three years we had made Plasti-Kote the No.1 Brand in the marketplace, a position it has held for 30+ years.
During this period we started to import the American manufactured GOJO soap and Purell instant hand sanitiser, and then a range of recycled toilet tissue and paper towels. Towards the end of our first 65 years as new cars started to come out with more "accessories" as standard equipment, we progressively got out of the parts and accessories business, then 4 years ago we sold the paint side of our business. The funds from this enabled us to purchase new equipment for our Singapore factory. We then became the first company to introduce a "Green Washroom” program into the NZ and Australian markets. Today we have the largest group of Independent Distributors in Australasia taking our soap, hand sanitiser, recycled toilet tissue and paper towels, plus an odour control range, to the "away from home" market. We also distribute the same products in Singapore where we have a paper converting plant that purchases the large rolls of recycled paper from Paper Mills. This is then cut down into individual toilet rolls, and individual paper towels, that will only fit the dispensers that we have. I guess one of my business highlights was three years ago when our Family Company was inducted into the Wellington Business Hall of Fame. Mention was made as to how we had always been willing to adapt and change, so as to remain in business over so many years. I never hide the fact that I am a born again Christian, and for the last 35+ years have been privileged to see healings and miracles within NZ and overseas, as God has called me into His Healing Ministry. I'm happy to share my experiences in this area for any who wish to talk to me privately. I have been on two overseas mission trips, one to work with the Aborigines in the outback of Australia, and the other to Uganda. As a result of a prophecy made, I now head up a Charitable Trust that has 23 acres of land in Uganda, where we have a Medical Clinic up and running with 7 staff. The plan is to eventually build a school, homes for orphans, guesthouse for overseas volunteers to stay in so that they can work within the complex or out in the community, a Church, and houses for the School Principal and Minister. I'm also building a Primary School in Malawi. Here the plan is for the first classroom to be ready in September, which is the beginning of the new school year. Eventually the school will have 8 classrooms, a roll of 480, a football sized playing field and a school hall. The intention is to raise funds by providing "naming rights" to the classrooms and hall, so if any you know any who may like a classroom named, "in their own name", or "in memory of………", then please introduce them to me. John Ross from The Professionals has already "bought" one classroom, and we are looking for others who may like to do as John has done. For my spare time I enjoy playing golf, still ski, both here and every so often I join American friends to ski in Colorado. I have a holiday home in Turangi, and went here, I'm always hopeful of catching a Trout. Mind you, I usually return and are able to say, "they will be bigger tomorrow"! I'm also keen on photography, enjoy the live theatre and musicals, and take great pleasure in touring visitors around NZ. I am currently writing two books, one on the first 100 years of our Family Company, which will be printed and distributed in 2023 when we celebrate our Centenary. The second is a Christian book, which at present has the draft title of "God Answers Prayers in Zero-5 Seconds”, which is based on a theory that I have. The theory is expanded in the book, along with 150+ Bible references, to back it up. The plan is to publish this book later
this year, and as 100% of the proceeds, minus the cost of printing, will be going towards building the primary School in Malawi, I'm happy to accept advance orders at $20 per book. It was probably 20 years ago that I started "NZ Art Schools", with the intention that this would become a semi-retirement hobby. I was bringing in top artists from Australia, Belgium, USA and South America, plus had two local artists, all invited to run workshops. Workshops were run in watercolours, oils, acrylics, all pastels, all from a teaching art studio, that I set up in our work premises at Seaview. This studio was reputed to be the finest our teaching facility in the NZ, and many artists came from throughout the country to attend. As a result, I have a large collection of paintings, painted by the artists that I hosted. The "dream" at the time was to eventually build a complex so as to do for art, what Len Southward did for motor cars, with the Southward Motor act Museum at Paraparaumu. I was hopeful of having an area for teaching, a place where new artists could paint for two weeks and sell their work, and art supply shop, Art Gallery for painting sales, and art library, as I think I have the largest collection of art books in NZ, Art Museum, and a place to hang my personal collection. As of today, I'm not sure of the "dream" will come about, or disappear. I also paint myself, and my favourite medium is painting in oils, using a pallet knife. I think I may have been born lazy as here there are no brushes to clean or smelly paint thinners. I just need to wipe the pallet knife clean with a paper towel. However I'm always happy to paint in any other medium, watercolour, acrylic or pastels. Having seen Bob Ross on American TV {he is now currently on TV here}, where he started with a blank canvas and 30 minutes later had finished an oil painting, I became "sold" on this method of painting. As a result I went to USA be trained to teach in this method, and returned as NZ's first official "Bob Ross Instructor". I have always said that, "if you can hold a pen and write, you can hold a brush and paint". Thus when people came to a class, I would always start, "Welcome. I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you can get up and walk out at any time, leave everything behind, and I would give you your money back, but you'll notice that I haven't taken any money off you. The bad news is that you may become addicted." There was no doubt, some of my students did become addicted, and interestingly enough, no one ever walked out. They all left with a painting they had completed 100% themselves, as I would never touch their work. Incidentally, the personal paintings I do today are not in the "Bob Ross style", although one day I may get back to teaching his method. I have been very fortunate to travel extensively throughout my lifetime. Initially most of the trips were on business, which didn't provide a lot of time for sightseeing. These encompassed trade shows and/or visiting factories in UK, Europe, North and Central America, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. In more recent years I've been able to spend time touring Cuba, Morocco, and was able to enjoy an Amsterdam to Budapest river cruise last year. I have also cruised in Fiji, completed in Alaskan cruise, and was fortunate to get to the Football World Cup when it was in Brazil a few years ago. With friends in UK, Europe, Canada, USA, and Australia, if "normal travel" ever returns, I shall be signing up for any FF travel, and "on the road again"…….with apologies to Willie Nelson! On the family side, I was married, had three sons, and 38 years ago lost Andrew, our eldest son, who died in a blizzard while tramping with school friends in the Tararuas. We subsequently had a fourth son, and then became a statistic, which says "over 50% of the people who lose a child, separate". After a few years apart, we came back together again for another 17-18 years, but a couple of years ago Margaret said she would be happier living on her own, so we are now separated.
Our eldest son is also separated, lives in Sydney, and has our only granddaughter. Our second son lives locally with his wife and our 4 grandsons, while our youngest son is also separated, and is currently living in Auckland with his partner. I am an "on the side-lines supporter" for the grandsons’ soccer, or on the beach when they are surfing over summer.
Just for fun
John Durnford shared this, sent by a FF friend from overseas. Rather appropriate, don’t you think?
