Mn. G. H. CLAYTON,

We u'ere sorry to lose Mr. Clayton at Easter. He hadbeen here since the opcning of the School in 1930 and along'll'ith N{r. Lav had been responsible for laying the foundationson rvhich the growing school could bui ld. The Englishdepartment, the rugger, the scouts and the Old Boys' Associa-t ion al l ou'e much to his t ireless enthusiasm and incessantdevotion to their interests. Both in class and out of schoolhe gained the affect ion of the boys and his interest in al l theiract ivi t ies st imulated and encouraged them. When he left ,the results of his u,-ork were apparent and none of us can f-eelany doubt as to the debt 'w'e owe him.

We congratulate him on his marriage which took placeon June lst and wish him and N{rs. Clavton much happiness.

The number of el l lc ient cr icketcrs in the Senior Schoolthis vear has proved erceptional lv small , the lealcrs last yearand during this vear having containec' l a nlore than usuallv highpercentage of promising cricket enthusiasts. Perhaps we areto have trvo lean vears before the promise of the Junior School,' lvhich is quite high, is real ised.

With only one old Colour avai iabie the outlook for theFirst Elever for the present season \vas not too encouraging. However, Remmington has been very successful with boihbat and bal l ancl this, together .n' i th the great improvementshewn by Sherr.vood as fielder, batsman and borvler, Neu.manas batsman, Fielder as bou' ler and (unti l he left) N. P. Sharpe, the * ' icket-keeper, as batsman, has made the season so farcomparatively successfui. Honours are even so far and butfor an injury which kept Remmington from bowling in threematches, School miqht $.e11 have lost f'erver matches thanthey have. The keenness of the u,hole team throughout hasbeen most pleasing. The ground fielding has bien quitegood, u' i th Holt, Fielder and Shenvood outstandins. thecatchin-g _h3s not always been what it might be, espiciallyin.the Old Boys' Xl latch u'hen the wind was cold. Ihe 6att ing,s-i th so many inexperienced batsmen in the side has beeirather staid. This however, is not altogether a bad sign.N'Iore experience rvill bring more runs u'hen care is the keyn6teof the batt ing. The borvi ing has sometimes lacke d accuracyand length hut has had so far more good moments than bad.On the rvhole thc First Elcvcn lras dcine better than rvasanticipated.

The record at present stands, rron 3, lost 3, drarvn 1.

After a moderate start against Daventry, vl.hen rveaknessesin bowling and f ielding rvere reveaied, the Eleven pul leditself together ar.rd did very rvell to beat Northampton Torvnand County School 2nd XI. (our f irst rvin against Northamp-ton). An easy u'in over the Parents may have broughtover-confidence for in the follou'ing match a defeat by Ketteringrvas due largely to a iack of sober determination to score runs.Another easv win over Ton'cester was follor.ved by a closematch againit Blackfriars, in 'uvhich some good f'asi bowlingtested the School batt ing and found i t rvanting in experienceand in ability to play forrvard right over the ball. A strongOld Boys' Eler-en pror.ed much too good against our weakenedbowling.

The 'Under 15' XI. has played two matches to dateand has not distinguished itself. This failure is due largelyto a general lack of determination to play the r ight strokes, and to inertness in the f ieid. With more experience perhapsthese faults n'ill be remedied, for crut'w-ard keenness is notIacking. I t remains for individual members to becomekeen on impror.ing themselr,es. Goodev is sherving muchpromise with the bat though his borvling, from rvhich muchwas expected has proved too errat ic to be effect ive. Fisheris perhaps the most improted batsman and bou' ier and Brownhas shewn that rvhen he is steady his bowling is quite effective. He st i l l sends down too many ful l- tosses horvever.

The 'Under 14 'X I . i s se t t l ing dorvn a f te r a shaky s ta r tand has some good performances to i ts credit. I f i ts bats-men were only more careful it rvould be quite a good team.Holever, u-i th Elks the captain sett ing a good example, the team is improving in batting and is coming to realise foritself that the strokes taught at nets are those ."r'hich pay inthe iong-run and that an endeavour to force everything toleg is too iimited and too dangerous an enterprise againstaccurate borvl ing and f ielding. The f ielding too, while st i l lpatchy is improving in alertniss u'hile the bou;ling, erratic att imes is tendins to become steadier and more ski l ful withoutlosing i ts attacking power.

On Saturday, August 6th, 1938, I began my cruise onthe N{. \r . Di lwara from Tilburv. We started about 5 p.m.and after leaving the Thames estuarv we follorved the eastcoast unti l we got to the Orkrreys. We n'ent ashore on Monday,at Kirkwail . The architecture of the Orknevs betrays i tsNorwegian origin, for up to the fifteenth centurv these islandsbelonged to Norrvay. Close by we saw Scapa Flou', the sceneof the dramatic scutt l ing of the surrendered German Fleetin May, 1919. We alsir sau- the recentiv excavated pre-h is to r ic v i l laee o f Skara Brae.

We left the Brit ish coast at 6 p.-. in the er.ening ancl madefor the Sogne Fjord, the longest one in the West of Norway. At the entrance we sa\{ the Sullen Islands where Tostiestarted out to make \\,'ar on King Harold in 1066. On cruisingup the fjord in the morning we enjoyed the full grandeurof the scenery. We then went into the distant arm of theSogne Fjord cal led the Fjaerland f jord. In the afternoon$'e went ashore at Nlundal, a smail village on the rvater's edge, and rvalked to the Bova Glacier about six miles from Mundal.

About 8 p.m. that night u'e left for Bergen, the secondlargest seaport in Noru'ay. Here rve sarv the rvold-famousscene of the Bergen fish market and by the aid of a funicularraih'av u'ent and sarv Florien, a small village about 1,000 feetabove Bergen. We lefi at 9 a.m. on Th"ursday and had aday of cruising in the Hardaner and Mauranger f jords. Thesefjords exhibit the most typical features of the Norr,r,egianscenery and have the two largest w-aterfails.

On Friday morning rve found ourselves in Christiansanda neu'-old town at the mouth of the Otra r iver with i ts back-ground of del ightful scenery. Christ iansand has been repeated-ly destroyed by fire and much of it is no\\' constructed instone instead of u'ood.

On Saturday rve visi ted Osio, u'here James [. of Englandmarried his Norlvegian princess. We sau' here the \riking
