NEW Gambia cruise and hotel twin centreFollowing on rom the success o the Rivers o West Arica cruise, which we

started oering rom Dakar in Senegal last winter with very positive eedback,

This cruise operated by Variety Cruises, will allow you to join the boat in

Banjul and cruise up the majestic River Gambia on board the riendly and

comortable MY Pegasus with a maximum o 46 guests. Optional excursions

Despite numerous trips to The Gambia Id never

actually made the short journey to Senegal something I

fnally managed in February 2010. The whole experience

was antastic: the legendary Banjul / Barra erry, the absolute

tranquillity o the hotel at Keur Saloum, the subtle shit in

culture (not to mention the recourse to my stammering

schoolboy French!), the wide, wide skies o the Sine Saloum

Delta, and on my last day, the dead o night drive into thebush at Baria to witness the amazing coming-to-lie o the

dawn bird chorus. The Gambia and Senegal are so close, and

in many ways the countries share so much, in terms o the

riendliness o the people, the superb ood, and the similarities

in the landscapes, and yet just a ew short miles and you can

eel the dierence. Somehow, away rom the tourist zones o

The Gambia, all that hustle and bustle drops away. Its quite

something. Ultimately though, the magic is in the way the two

destinations complement one another, and now Ive been, a

twin centre holiday suddenly seems so obvious

    OHER HOLIDAYS

BirdwatchingThe Gambia packs a great deal into a compact space not least the sheer

number and variety o birds (some 540 species!). I youll allow us to get

technical or a moment, The Gambia sits right at the centre o something

called a transition zone, which means or a relatively small country it supports

a huge variety o habitats, including orest-savannah environments and drier

woodland ones, marine systems and, o course, the lie-giving River Gambia

with its estuary mudats and the intricate mangrove tributaries o the interior.

In short, with all these habitats in a relatively small area, The Gambia is one

heck o a place or birdlie!

The Gambia thereore, provides an amazing opportunity or birdwatching

and, with everything being in relatively close proximity, you dont have to

travel ar to see some amazing things youll even fnd a whole host o

exotic species in your hotel gardens. So whether youre a frst timer, a

keen amateur or an enthusiast looking or particular species, we guarantee

reshwater fsh plus a host o localised species which include Vundu Catfsh,

Sharptooth Catfsh, Arican Pike, Characins, Threadfn Salmon and many

more. The Gambia River is a totally unspoilt, huge stretch o resh water,

untouched by commercialism whilst the o-shore waters o the Senegal

coast oer some antastic opportunities or big game fshing.

Each year we arrange trips or a number o fshing groups, and can oer

ree places or groups o six or more; i you are interested please contact

Ive been to The Gambia more than 15 times now and still think o

it as one o the greatest birding destinations anywhere in the world. Maybe

its the place that all good birders go to when they lay down their binoculars

and complete their lie-lists! I was there twice in 2010 and, although my

trip in February this year was curtailed, Ive missed the old place and have

already planned my next visit in 2012.

When Im asked why I love The Gambia so much - both as a country and

a birding destination - I cannot really improve on what Ive said in the past:

its the joy o being there with the lovely people and so many good riends,

the excellent hotels and ood, the eeling o saety when Im out and about, alone or with riends, and its also the accessibility o the birds and wildlie

in general. I am always so impressed with the generally excellent quality

o the local bird guides, and in particular my good riend Malick Suso, and

am hit each time with that extraordinary eeling o never being sure what

you might see whilst out in the eld, but knowing that I will always see an

amazing variety o birdlie wherever I go. Whats not to love...

    CHRIS PACKHAM, BBC Presenter

More birdwatching toursMalick Suso... the next best thing

When Chris Packham is in The Gambia he uses a local guide, Malick Suso

a man he has described as one o the very best bird guides in the wholeo The Gambia - to help him fnd the best locations or spotting particular

species and he admits this local knowledge is invaluable.

This year we are once again oering 3 day birdwatching tours led by Mali

himsel; he will take groups (maximum o 10 people) to a variety o habita

including the ollowing: Kotu stream where youll see all kinds o waders a

kingfshers and, i youre lucky, the elusive bittern; Abuko Nature Reserve

with its amazing pool where all sorts o species congregate, rom Arican

darters to hammerkops; Tanji shore and fshing village which is home to a

    mix o shore and sea birds as well as the rare golden-tailed woodpecker;

and also the community project at Bruut woods, where the local experts

will lead you to the white-aced scops owl and the impossibly camouage

    long-tailed nightjar.

The itinerary o each tour varies slightly so its best to check with our

reservations team or online at Gambia.co.uk/Birdwatching

The supplement or this tour is 195*

Plover & TanjiOn selected dates we also operate two tours, Plover and Tanji; itineraries

are available on our website but briey they entail:

Plover: 4 days o guided birdwatching giving you the best opportunity to

    see a wide variety o species. 225*.

Tanji: 3 days o excursions in the Tanji area as well as bush habitat and

Although The Gambia and Senegal are oten
