I welcome the players, mentors and supporters from St. Brendan’s, Lixnaw, Ballyduff and Kilmoyleyto Abbeydorney for the semi-finals of the Garveys Super Valu County Senior Hurling Championship. Ihope that the players and supporters enjoy the games and that they will be played in the bestsporting manner. Welcome also to the referees, their umpires and linesmen.

The County Hurling Championship games are important sporting occasion for the players who takegreat pride in representing their clubs. This year the games are being staged at the club venues andthe club officers and volunteers at each of those venues can be justifiably proud of their efforts.Their hard work and planning the hosting of the games is further testament of the tremendouscommunity effort that is generated by the County Senior Hurling Championship.

Hopefully the semi-finals will be entertaining, hard fought and closely contested right up to the fulltime whistle and played in the true spirit of sportsmanship. The teams are well prepared by theirmanagement teams and for that reason we expect to see great games of hurling.

A sincere word of thanks to the Kerry Senior, Minor & U21 Hurling Teams, the players and themanagement teams led by Senior Manager Eamonn Kelly, Minor manager, Ian Brick and U21 manager,Joe Walsh and also to the players and coaches of our Hurling Development Squads. Our Minor Teamplay in the Final of the All-Ireland Minor B Hurling Championship next Saturday and we wish them thevery best of luck. The Senior Team manager, Eamonn Kelly and his management team in their secondyear in charge led the team to achieve promotion to Div. 1B in the Allianz Hurling League andfollowed that with victory in the Christy Ring Cup Final. We are hugely indebted to Eamonn for hisachievements with the team in his two years in charge. His successor as manager has a strongfoundation to build on for the big challenges that face the team next year.

In 2016 our Senior Hurling team will not only be in a higher division of the league but also join theProvincial Qualifier Group of the Liam McCarthy Cup in which they will play a round robin of gamesagainst Carlow, Offaly and Westmeath. The top two teams then qualify for the quarterfinals of theLeinster Hurling Championship.

It is important to pay tribute to the Hurling Officer, Ger McCarthy, Vice Chairman, Diarmuid Ó Sé andCentral Council Delegate, John Joe O’Carroll for their work this year with our Inter County Teams.

The Abbeydorney pitch is dedicated to the memory of Tom Healy. Tom devoted his life to hurling andhis work as an administrator is rightly acknowledged by the Abbeydorney Club. He had a greatinterest in the development of our underage intercounty teams and would indeed be very proud ofthe achievements of our Senior Hurling Team this year.

GARVEYS SUPERVALU SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS

Saturday evening’s semi-final meetingbetween Lixnaw and St Brendan’s will

be eagerly awaited by Kerry hurling fans.The last two winners of the Kerry SeniorHurling County Championship have got toknow each other pretty well over the pastfew seasons both on the hurling andfootball fields. These two remarkable dualclubs have sampled so much success inrecent years. Their feats both in thecounty and further afield have been acredit to the GAA in Kerry and long maytheir dual success continue.

These two sides have been the formteams in Kerry hurling over the past twoyears. St Brendan’s beat Lixnaw in theCounty Final after a replay in 2013. Lixnawthen went on to defeat St Brendan’s in the2014 semi-final after a replay before goingon to win the championship. Mark Foley’smen have looked very impressive againthis year and Lixnaw are many people’sfavourites to retain their title. The samecould not be said of St Brendan’s whostruggled in the earlier rounds of thechampionship before putting on a hurlingmaster class in their quarterfinalannihilation of Causeway. Pat O’Driscoll’sside were also really impressive when theydefeated Ballyduff in Ballyduff to win thedelayed 2014 County League title a coupleof months back and because of that, theirdismal form in the opening rounds of thechampionship was a real surprise.

The meeting of these two deadly rivals

should be another fascinating encounterbetween two teams who will know eachother like the backs of their hands. Thenew x factor to take into account in theanalysis of this game is the fact that thisclash will take place in Abbeydorney andnot in Austin Stack Park as was previouslythe case with championship clashesbetween these two. The Abbeydorneysurface is perfect for hurling but theperception is that Austin Stack Park is amuch bigger playing field than most NorthKerry hurling venues. If that is indeed thecase then space will be at a premium forboth teams to display their undoubtedabilities. Lixnaw have been the form teamin 2015. They were very impressive intheir win over Causeway but so too wereSt Brendan’s so the form line is difficult to

gauge. What we do know is that Lixnawhave a superb forward line now that thetwo Conway brothers, Shane and Michael,are in harness alongside the likes of JamesFlaherty, Ricky Heffernan, Enda Galvin andColin Sheehy. John Buckley was alsooutstanding for the Kerry minors recentlyalongside Jermey McKenna so Lixnawhave an abundance of firepower in attack.

St Brendan’s are a little bit more reliant onJohn Egan for the bulk of their scoresalthough Eric Leen, Kevin Skinner, TimHannafin, Daithí Griffin and KieranFitzgerald have all chipped in with keyscores in recent games. If one factor is totip the balance in this contest thenLixnaw’s greater all round scoring abilityshould decide the contest. In previousmeetings between these two there hasbeen little to choose between both sidesand defences have normally beendominant. Both sides have gritty andtalented defenders. Lixnaw have theCorridan’s but St Brendan’s have theHorgan brothers plus a bang in-form

county man in the shape of DarrenDineen. This is sure to be another tenseand tight affair. Lixnaw deserve the mantleof favourites but a St Brendan’s win wouldin no way be a surprise to anyone presentin Abbeydorney on Saturday evening. Adraw is as likely a result as any such.We’ve already seen so many draws in thehurling championship in recent years.There is very little to choose between anyof the 8 teams in North Kerry at presentand that has made for an intriguingchampionship. The fact that the gamesare being played at North Kerry venueshas levelled the playing field even further.If I am forced to go for one team onSaturday evening then Lixnaw look themost likely to book a place in their 5thfinal in 6 years.

St Brendans Under 14 Féile na nGael TeamSt Brendans Under 14 Féile na nGael Team who represented Kerry in the Finals in Ulster earlier in the year.They were hosted by the Cúchulainn Club in Armagh City whom they defeated when winning their Group.

However their Féile dreams came to an end in Monaghan when going down to Craóbh Rua after extra time. The players played brilliantly and can be very proud of themselves and the way they

represented their County, Club and Families.

St. Brendan’s came into this semi-final as reigning champions and having defeated Lixnaw in the 2013co. final. Over the past few years there has been little between these sides and this time it was nodifferent. At the first time of asking, the tie ended all square at 9 points apiece. The main influenceson the game were the respective free takers, Ricky Heffernan and John Egan who put over 4 each.However it was a last gasp opportunity for Lixnaw, a free in front of goals from just 50 metres outthat Heffernan narrowly failed to convert, that sent the sides to a replay. Both sides faced off again at Austin Stack Park on Saturday, 13 September where another epic contestensued. Lixnaw fielded slightly stronger for the replay, although with a replacement goalkeeper, youngRobert Silles. Back into the team came Pat Corridon, Paul Galvin and Mike Conway. The Ardfert sidewent into a 3 point lead by the 11th minute before Heffernan opened the Lixnaw account with 2pointed frees. The teams were level 3 times during atremendous second period and right down to the 55th minute it could have gone either way. Finally,Brendan Brosnan edged Lixnaw into a 1 point lead with 5 minutes remaining and this proved in theend to be the decisive score, Lixnaw coming out on top by 0 - 13 to 0 - 12.

match previewChampionship clashes between fierce rivalsBallyduff and Kilmoyley, do not buildcharacter, they reveal character. Littlewonder, because between them, they have46 championships won, and sit proudly ontop of the roll of honour, one and two. So can Ballyduff move a step closer to titlenumber 25 or will Kilmoyley repeat lastyear’s semi-final win and move to the cuspof their 23rd title? The answer my friends, inthe words of Bob Dylan, is blowing in thewind, because, nobody could predict theoutcome of this mouth-watering Sundayevening clash, unless they had mysticqualities. Looking at the form lines of both sides in thisyear’s championship, the only realconclusion one could arrive at is that bothare extremely lucky to be in the semi-final atall. Kilmoyley have only a sprinkling of thesides that won six championships in thenoughties, while Ballyduff are also down anumber of key men, such as Podge Boyle,

Paud Costello, P J Gorman and Ally O’Connorwhile Liam Boyle’s knees must be creakinglike a door hung on rusty and worn hinges. Kilmoyley will be the first to admit that theywere fortunate to draw with Crotta O’Neill’sfirst day out and indeed Crotta is thecommon denominator when assessing bothsides as the Kilflynn lads must be one of theunluckiest championship losers in recenthistory. Remember Kilmoyley trailed Crottaby eight points at half time in that first roundgame and John Meyler was forced tointroduce an injured Daniel Collins andAdrian Royle to rescue the Lerrig boys. It wasthe precocious Collins who rescued them,and has contributed 1-22 of their total todate, which is eight points more than theiraverage for their three games to-date. Thereplay again saw Kilmoyley in trouble andCrotta might well have won it, but Kilmoyleyprevailed, again driven on by Daniel Collins. It was then onto Ballyduff on a wet andwindy Bank Holiday Monday night, and thistime Shaun Young did the damage with histwo goals and Daniel Collins, with one legheavily strapped, did the rest, in a game,where the experience of Tom Murnane,James McCarthy and Sean Dowling wascritical against the youthful enthusiasm ofAbbeydorney, without the O’Leary brothers. Turning to Ballyduff, they lost their openinground game to a fancied Causeway sidewhich subsequently left that form downbadly, but worse still, they lost the mercurialPadraig Boyle for the season. It was thenonto Lixnaw on a Tuesday evening, to face

Crotta and again, it would fair to say thatthey huffed and puffed in normal time tomatch Crotta O’Neill’s ferocity and hungerand looked to be making their exit in injurytime, when Crotta missed a scoreable free.However in extra time, the old Ballyduffresurfaced as the Boyles, Liam, Aiden andMikey, and the O’Gradys began to hurl inthe tradition of Ballyduff and a sublimegoal from Garry O’Brien, allied to theaccuracy of Bobby O’Sullivan, saw Ballyduffget over the line by six, but it was muchtighter than that. Then it was an Abbeydorney side, with thepowerful O’Leary brother’s Brendan andyoung Michael, who almost derailedBallyduff’s ambitions, and P J Keane’s firsthalf goals, had the champions reeling.Again Bobby O’Sullivan proved to be amatch winner and two late points sawBallyduff into the semis, but not inimpressive fashion. So two sides meet, who have not exactlyshone this year and if you were to take thescoring returns of Daniel Collins and BobbyO’Sullivan away, then neither Ballyduff norKilmoyley appear to have a good scoringspread in attack. Throw in Gary O’Brien andShaun Young and then you can see where

this game will be won and lost. While both defences are strong and tough,the game will be decided, by whichever setof forwards get on top and give theirscorers in chief a dig out. So can the likes ofMikey Boyle, Eoin Ross, Aiden Boyle, BarryO’Grady and possibly Kevin Junior if hereturns, do enough damage against atenacious no nonsense defence, whoremember shut out Ballyduff last year. Or will it be Adrian Royle, Shaun Young,Robert Collins, Sean Maunsell or JordanBrick, who will give Daniel Collins a helpinghand?

with Ballyduff in 2014.

Ballyduff came into this semi-final on the back of a defeat to St. Brendan’s and wins over Causewayand Crotta. Kilmoyley were very much an outside bet at the start of the championship but earlierround wins, co-incidentally also against Causeway and Crotta put them through to the penultimatestage. Kilmoyley started well with Tom Murnane influential at centre back and Paudie O'Connorlikewise at midfield. Ballyduff lined out with two changes from their selected team, were minusPadraig Boyle and had a number of positional switches, most notably the switch of Bobby O'Sullivanto centre field. Sean Maunsell opened the scoring with a 9th minute point from play and minorplayer, Robert Collins, added 2 more in the opening quarter, with Bobby O'Sullivan replying with apointed free for Ballyduff. In fact, he was to score all of his sides four first half scores from frees.Meanwhile Kilmoyley hit 9 points, all but one from play to lead at the break by 9 points to 4. On the re-start, Padraig Boyle came on as a substitute and Bobby O'Sullivan and Daniel Collinsexchanged early pointed frees. Sean Maunsell pointed for Kilmoyley on 40 minutes to give them asix point lead, 0 – 11 to 0 - 5. However they were not to score again until the 56th minute. Bobby O'Sullivan's meanwhile continued to punish any fouls conceded and he put over 3 more toleave the deficit at just 3 points entering the final quarter. O’Sullivan again, his sides only scorer,reduced the gap to just 2 points on 53 minutes as fortunes ebbed and flowed. Kilmoyley workedhard to retain their lead. Maunsell gave them some relief in the 56th minute to put a goal betweenthe sides. In a nerve racking finish, another Ballyduff point again left it at 2 points. However,Kilmoyley just about held out.
