More than 140 young ladies and gentlemen enthusiastically attended our annual Gleeson Year 10 Dance held in the Golden Grove Arts Theatre last Wednesday evening.

During the previous week’s dance practice at school, instructed by Gleeson College Old Scholar Nataly Sammut, the students were put through their paces and challenged to learn to dance. They tried their skills at the ‘Military Two Step’, ‘Samba, Waltz’, a ‘Progressive Jive’ and my favourite, the ‘Cha Cha’. Many had no idea of these dances and as we engrossed ourselves into the lessons, a new lease of life and energy began to evolve within the group. Students began looking forward to lessons and much talk revolved around the upcoming ‘Dance Evening’.

The night started with the usual procession. No one wanted to leave the foyer of the Golden Grove Recreation Centre until they had ‘checked’ out who was wearing what! There should have been a red carpet… the glamour, the photos, the entrances and the music was playing ready for the first dance. From this point on, the energy on the dance floor was electric!

With a few opportunities to rest throughout the night, the students enjoyed a supper of pizza, chips and soft drink, all the staple foods groups for a night like this! Before we knew it, the students and staff had danced the night away, still with a grin from ear to ear and keen to keep dancing. But as all good things must come to an end we farewelled them all. On arrival to school Thursday morning, there were a few sleepy faces and memories that will last forever.

On a final note, I would like to offer a special thank you to the students who embraced the lessons and night and

more importantly enjoyed themselves. Also, a big thank you to all the staff that helped supervise the students on the night, joined in and danced and helped serve the supper. Without any of these people, community events like these would not be possible.

THANK YOU TO THE GLEESON COMMUNITY!

Thank you to the Gleeson CommunityBy now many of you will have received a letter from our Principal, Andrew Baker, outlining that I have accepted a secondment to Thomas More College for a period of 12 months commencing in Term 4 of this year. I am, at once, both excited and nervous about this experience.

The excitement comes from the work that is to be done in a wonderful Catholic community, an important school in Catholic Education in South Australia, not far from us. Working with the Thomas More Community on strategy and innovation will be stimulating and a great learning experience which will be beneficial for the Gleeson College community also.

The nervousness comes from the fear of leaving a community I love – albeit for 12 months. I could not have accepted this new position without the enormous support of our Principal, Andrew Baker, the Leadership Team, the staff, students and families of Gleeson College. I want to thank you for the support you have given me over the years and the formation you have provided me as a leader in Catholic Education. Thank you.

Teaching Excellence AwardOn Wednesday this week it was my pleasure to attend the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering Teaching Excellence Award ceremony at which our fabulous Science teacher and Science Learning Area Coordinator, Mrs Kate Morgante, received this annual Teaching Excellence Award (see photo far right). Kate is recognised for her passion for the sciences, her excellence in teaching the sciences and her extraordinary work promoting STEM at Gleeson College. A fabulous accolade for a wonderful teacher (and Gleeson Old Scholar!). Congratulations Kate.

‘Try Gleeson’ DaysMonday and Tuesday of this week saw Year 4, 5 and 6 students from Saint David’s Parish School and Our Lady of Hope School attend Gleeson College for a day.

I am sure that they enjoyed the various experiences on offer and we certainly enjoyed the energy and excitement that only Year 4, 5 and 6 students can bring to a high school setting!

I wish to thank the staff from Saint David’s, Our Lady of Hope and Gleeson College for their work with these wonderful young people. It was a pleasure to host them. We look forward to the students from St Francis Xavier’s Regional Catholic School visiting us next week.

Saturday Morning SportSaturday Morning Sport wrapped up for the winter this week with most Gleeson teams enjoying very good seasons in all sports. The student participation has been fantastic and I would like to thank the parents and old scholars that have supported the teams in many ways giving of their time and expertise throughout the season. Our thanks go to Ms Rachel Staffin who has done a great job of organising and keeping track of our sporting teams.

Many of our teams are still involved in State Knockout Competitions so we wish them all the best and hope for some of those State Titles to come our way again in 2016.

Stop Press: Gleeson College First XI Boys Soccer Team have won the TSL (Twilight Soccer League) Grand Final against PAC, 2-0, last night (see photos below). Congratulations boys - Well Done!

Father’s DayI would like to take this opportunity to wish all the fathers in our community a fantastic Father’s Day and thank you for all you do for the students at Gleeson.

“God our Father, We give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old.We pray for young fathers, newly

embracing their vocation; May they find courage and perseverance to balance

work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own Fathers around the

world whose children are lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compassion

walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers

but still mentor and guide us withfatherly love and advice.

We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and

nourish us with their love. Amen”

God Bless,

J Corbo,Deputy Principal

‘TRY GLEESON’ DAYS 2016 > Primary Students Try High School for a Day!Born from a call by the local Catholic Primary Schools for a Catholic Secondary education pathway, Gleeson College has a strong tradition and partnership with Saint Francis Xavier's Regional Catholic School, Saint David's Parish School and Our Lady of Hope School.

Every year our students engage with the Primary School staff and students in a range of ways including Performing Arts Roadshows, Umpiring and Carnival support and Community Service just to name a few. These activities generally involve our students going out to the primary schools - but this week and next, we have flipped the idea and are hosting the primary school students at Gleeson.

We invited students and staff from our partner Catholic Primary Schools to see and try high school for a day. Disembarking from buses on were very excited Year 4, 5 and 6 students. Before them lay a day of activities providing a day of opportunity for Primary School staff to work with their students and our teachers in specialist facilities/learning areas which they may seek to utilise in future. For some students, the days are part of initial transition and orientation into the College and for others attending different high schools, a chance to experience some engaging and fun learning experiences in a secondary setting.

There was certainly a buzz of excitement at the end of each session as classes shared stories of the activities they undertook which included:• Cooking in Home Economics;• An Introduction to Japanese (with a

Pokémon twist);• Creating a design on computer and

printing this as a sticker in Design and Technology;

• A trip back to the time of the Vikings in HaSS; and

• A Chemistry Science Show and a chance to undertake some experiments.

This week we hosted Saint David's Parish School and Our Lady of Hope School. Next week we host St Francis Xavier's Regional Catholic School (and will provide some more photos in The Globe next week).

Thank you to our wonderful GC student hosts who worked in an Old Scholar Capacity with their Primary Schools:From Saint David’s: Luca Moran, Harrison Conant, Chelsea Rulla and Chelsea FocarelliFrom OLOH: Teagan Wilson, Caitlyn Papalia, Caleb Ferraresso, Taylen James, Brea Hurst and Connor CathcartFrom SFX (on Monday 5 Sept.): Chelsea Schwarz, Abby Taverner, Jana Ivancic, Marcus Petts, Jordi Bassham and Deon Martino-Williams.

To our Gleeson staff who were so giving of their time to prepare some outstanding learning opportunities, thank you for engaging with our Partner Primary School Community. These days require a significant team effort and I would like to acknowledge the work of: Mrs Sue Smith, Mrs Rachel McKay, Mrs Jeanine Fielding, Mr Adrian Ranieri, Mr Steven Hicks, Mr Ben McDeed, Miss Sarah Mahony, Miss Lisa Feleppa, Mrs Jane Fuller, Mr Joshua Boden, Mrs Kirsty Jeffree, Miss Ashlee Curtis, Mrs Kate Pill, Mrs Rebecca Sinclair and members of the Leadership Team.

“DON’T JUST USE THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY > INVENT IT!”

QUESTACONInvention Convention 2016

The Questacon Invention Convention recently visited Adelaide allowing Information Technology students, with an interest in design, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, the opportunity to apply to participate in the workshop programme offered by the University of South Australia.

Congratulations to Gleeson Year 9 Digital Technologies student Blake Lawrenson (9 DMCUR) who was successful in gaining a place in the Questacon Smart Skills Initiative. Students were challenged to not only use the latest technology but to invent it, under the banner of reuse, repurpose, recycle.

The Invention Convention was a three day hands on workshop, where 14-18 year olds were afforded the opportunity to design, create, problem solve, and prototype technology from robotics and electronics, through to wood and hot glue to bring their ideas to life. Local experts, high tech equipment and tools were at the disposal of the students to assist them in the designing and prototyping of South Australia’s next big invention.

Blake reflects on his time at Questacon:“At the invention convention, students

were asked to make a device that could be used to aid people out in the desert, only using toys. I decided to use a cheap child's walkie talkie and re-tune it into the Australian Emergency Channel and

boost the range of the walkie talkie. So that I was able to re-tune the radio

and find out the operating range of the radio, the supervisors called in an expert from UniSA. He brought in an

oscilloscope to measure the frequency of the radio. The experience was

very fulfilling and I learnt a lot about innovation and facts I didn’t know about

radios.” Blake Lawrenson (9DMCUR)

Blake should be commended for his courage to pursue his passion for Innovation and Technologies, and for his positive representation of Gleeson College. We wish Blake all the best in his continual quest to be a future innovator of technologies.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GLEESON CONCERT BAND!> SILVER MEDAL @ ABODA BAND FESTIVAL

The Gleeson College Concert Band (conducted by Mr Angelo Valdivia) travelled to Westminster School to compete in the annual ABODA Band Festival on

Thursday 25 September.

The band competed in the Intermediate Concert Band section at the competition, which comprised of 22 Concert Bands from around Australia.

Our GC Band played the best I had ever heard them, with beautiful sensitivity and excellent responsiveness to Mr Valdivia’s conducting, and as a consequence of

their wonderful playing, they won a silver medal!

Congratulations to all of the members of the Concert Band and also toMr Angelo Valdivia for the amazing work he has done with the group since

Term 2 of this year.

2016 BOOK WEEK & CAMPUS BOOK CUP > ‘Australia. Story. Country.’

Term 3, Week 5 saw celebrations for Children’s Book Week at Gleeson College. Book Week is an annual event lead by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and now in its 71st year and in 2016 the theme was ‘Australia. Story. Country.’

In preparation for Book Cup, Year 8 students read various texts from novels to short stories, poetry, electronic media and films. Forming teams in class, students competed in preliminary quiz rounds in our own Thomas Library, with the top four finalists earning a place to compete against teams from Golden Grove High School and Pedare Christian College at the Campus Book Cup Grand Final! This was held in Thiele Library on Friday 26 August. The aim is to encourage a passion for reading and the idea of team work. The Grand Final Quiz was followed by the traditional presentation of the Campus Book Cup and of course a well-earned shared pizza lunch!

While Gleeson did not win the Cup in 2016, I am pleased to say all four teams represented Gleeson College with pride and enthusiasm, really participating in the spirit of the competition. Just two points separated three of our Gleeson teams from the eventual winners, the GGHS Kawaii Pandas! The competition was certainly the closest in a few years and there were so many keen readers among the three schools.

Congratulations to this year’s overall winners, the Kawaii Pandas, and to our 2nd placed team, The Marauders, made up of Callum McFadden, Emily Hartwell, Michaela Rutter and Rochelle Bragg.

It was also pleasing to see another of our teams, Shrek SHRP, made up of Brea Hurst, Madison Sauerwald, Chelsea Rulla and Emily Papalia win the ‘Creative Response’ section of the competition. Students’ were asked to create a comic storyboard based on the film Paper Planes. For their efforts they each received a novel of their choice.

Thomas Library also promoted Young Adult fiction by up and coming Australian authors to celebrate Book Week and we were fortunate to have talented Australian Children’s Author and Illustrator, Dan McGuiness, visit our Year 8 students on Monday 22 August. Students listened to

Dan, who hails from Adelaide, talk about the process of writing and producing comics and graphic novels. He talked about his passion for drawing as a young boy, his love of skateboarding and video games! This passion has led to various titles, namely the ‘Pilot and Huxley’ series being published and an upcoming series collaborating with Ahn Doh. When not writing or drawing Dan runs his very own comic book shop in the heart of Adelaide called Greenlight Comics in Rundle Mall. The shop has become a place for lovers of graphic novels to meet and create! We thank Dan for his visit to the Campus and for sharing his passion for writing and encouraging our Gleeson Year 8 students to continue their reading journey. Click on the following link to visit Dan’s bookshop: https://greenlightcomics.com/

Thank you to all students who participated, English teachers from across the Campus and Library staff who helped bring the week’s events together. Congratulations to all our finalists for representing Gleeson College and showing such fantastic community spirit. Book Week really does prove that books are alive and well. We look forward to next year!

ONE+ CAMPUS ASSEMBLIES > An Amazing Collaboration in 2016!

On Tuesday 23 August, students on Campus came together in the Pedare Christian College Chapel to celebrate a long standing tradition - the annual One+ Campus Assemblies.

The assemblies were professionally hosted by versatile Student Leaders, representing all schools. Professional, animated performances by Class Bands and Concert Bands were enjoyed by students, staff and special guests. Dance Troupes and Drama Classes wowed the audience with their energy and performance incorporating popular contemporary tunes as well as well-known classics. The audience was also engaged in VET Shared Learning with presentations from the Cert II Electronics, Cert II Hospitality and Cert II Conservation and Land Management Classes.

Following the Welcome to Country and National Anthem, the opening item showcased Concert Band students from each school. Hours of rehearsal saw the three Concert Bands come together to perform the well-known opening theme to Game of Thrones. This performance was a testament to the camaraderie and collaboration between our talented students and staff. In particular, Gleeson College’s Concert Band and Stage Band did us proud, as did Dylan Fisher performing in the Pedare Strings Ensemble and Tom Stewart providing a convincing performance as Macbeth with a Pedare Drama senior. Special guests and staff commented on the exceptional energy and skills of the performers.

Mr Andrew Baker addressed all students on behalf of Golden Grove High School Principal Mr Paul Wilson and Pedare Christian College Principal Mr Mike Millard. Mr Baker spoke about the unique nature of our Campus and the extended opportunities for learning through our unique collaboration. Events such as this don’t come together without a significant collaborative effort. I take this opportunity to extend thanks on behalf of the Campus to our talented Performing Arts students and staff under the leadership of Arts Learning Area Coordinator Carly Meakin, Student Leaders, Grounds and Administration staff.

SATURDAY WINTER SPORT WRAP UP > GC Girls Reign Supreme in 2016!

Saturday Morning Winter Sport has now drawn to an end, and there are some

memorable highlights from season 2016!

As a Sports Coordinator it was fantastic to see the cohesion amongst our players

as they represented the College with pride, but also the individual growth of our

players throughout the season.

Gleeson participated in the following sports in Winter Season 2016:

Boys > Open & Middle Basketball,Middle Soccer A and B Grade.

Girls > Open Soccer, Middle Soccer, Year 8 Netball, Year 9 Netball, Year 10A Netball

and Open Badminton.

The success in all our sports was not just measured by the final standings of the teams, but by the accomplishments of each team. Gleeson has a culture in

sport that is driven by passion and pride of the College and as such we are very

lucky to constantly have GC Old Scholars return to Coach our teams. The season

would not be as successful without these core individuals. Rain, hail or

shine, these Coaches modified training sessions and games to ensure that all

students had an enjoyable and memorable experience. Thank you must go to GC Old

Scholars Jayden Kirk, Daniel Luciano, Carlo Librino, Adam Biggs, Daniel Coscia,

Amy Uglesic, Maggie Fitzharris, Maddi Glover, Jordan Glover and Brody Laycock

for all their work coaching throughout the season. Thank you also to Miss Lisa

Feleppa, Maddie Deegan and Darren Saul for their expert coaching and knowledge they were able to provide to the students

participating in the Gleeson Sport Program. Watching the progression of all players, some who have not necessarily

played their chosen sport before, develop throughout the course of the season

shows exactly why these amazing coaches continue each weekend.

A big congratulations to our Girls teams who were successful in their play-offs

for top spot this season. Congratulations to the Open Girls Soccer, Open Girls

Badminton, the Middle Girls Soccer and the Year 8 and 9 Netball Teams on this

outstanding achievement!

This season was a competitive one for Gleeson and one that I hope will continue

into Term 4 Summer Sport.
